My respect for the Duchess has just shot up. For a Royal, this is pretty bold and brave.

Not forgetting other women - if you attended the vigil tonight, thank you for sticking up for women's rights. Let's hope this is an opportunity for the Met Police to review and change how they treat both offending officers and female victims

There are so many problems comparing Black Lives Matter marches to the vigil last night. You show disrespect to both black people , especially Black women and to Sarah Everard when you do. A woman has had her life stolen, her family and friends are grieving. The focus should be on her alone. A far better vigil would have been women and their supporters up and down the country on their door steps with candles followed up by legal and policy changes that will mean that women are safe whilst enjoying their freedom.

Yes this.

Totally agree that Kate went with the same anger compassion and resolve that we as women all feel. I did watch the short video, she looked as we all feel, her face was flushed and emotional.

Kate is simply standing with us as a woman. Having two daughters what happened to Sarah is my first fear.

So upset and angry. Just as Kate feels, as one of us.

So sorry to all of Sarah’s family and friends.

ImaginaryDragon · 14/03/2021 07:43

That should read in response in to EnOla.

Averyslover · 14/03/2021 07:44

Whatever Catherine does will be the front page of every newspaper. I hope she uses the power she has to stand up for women.

ImAncient · 14/03/2021 07:44

@Sprining

Why do you doubt it? It could well have been someone in PR who said go in and show support.

Doesn’t mean that she didn’t feel compassion. You’d have to be a sociopath not to

Yes absolutely

I’m sure I read somewhere that royals receive death threats. If that’s true then maybe she’s scared. Maybe this is her way of showing that. I’ve no idea just surmising!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 14/03/2021 07:45

@Blessex

In the end. Women cannot win can they.
You said it Blessex!
GaryUnicorn · 14/03/2021 07:49

No mask on - definitely wanting to be recognised.

I doubt there will there will be any more ‘support’ than this.

The other stuff requires hard work behind the scenes. No indication from Kate’s years being in the RF that she is up to that!

UsedUpUsername · 14/03/2021 07:51

It’s totally PR but still a nice gesture all the same.

Just like when the family was photographed getting Easyjet just after H&M were (rightfully) trashed after flying private. It’s not a coincidence, but should we really care about these PR battles? Maybe it’s better to take this stuff at face value

TheLaughingGenome · 14/03/2021 07:52

I've slept on this, and I feel today the same as yesterday, which is that I'm glad she went (to the bandstand).

I think it was an important gesture which she undertook without fanfare.

Crossandcrochety · 14/03/2021 07:54

Isn’t it possible she didn’t have her mask on so her protection officers could recognise her if anything happened? She wasn’t dressed for an official visit - wearing a mask, she would have been indistinguishable.

RampantIvy · 14/03/2021 07:55

@GaryUnicorn

Or maybe she didn't wear one because she was outside.

Why do you assume that anything she does has an ulterior motive?

Even if it was a PR move, it was a positive one.

IpanemaNova · 14/03/2021 07:55

Good on Kate for going and paying her respects.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 14/03/2021 07:56

I forgot that it was the Met that bodged the Stephen Lawrence case. And still no heads rolled. Why are people continuing to defend this shit show of a force? They've been doing this forever. "We" can't do anything - their culture and system needs an overhaul

I have a tad more respect for her now.

daisypond · 14/03/2021 07:56

Why would she wear a mask? It’s outside and nor was she going to go in a building at any point. I was there at lunchtime and I didn’t wear a mask. Why would I?

I think she was very cautious for her first decade as a royal but she’s coming into her power now and we might all be pleasantly surprised what happens when she moves beyond the - very safe - subjects of children and art she has stuck to so far.

She must have views on misogyny after so many years as a woman on the public eye.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 14/03/2021 08:02

Look at the front pages of most of the press in their first editions for confirmation of a PR stunt. Most dominated by a big picture of Kate at Clapham Common. It shouldn't be about her but about the brutal kidnapping and murder of a young woman and a family who have suffered a terrible loss. Just imagine the responses if it had been Meghan Markle who had attended!

Agree. This is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. The papers are all about Kate, Kate, Kate but where are be headlines about the real issue of male violence against women and misogynistic police forces? And yes I dread to think about the poison on the press if MM had done this.

I agree, although those who went during the day seem to have been respectful. The evening was hijacked, and it should never have been in her name- disrespectful.
cyclingmad · 14/03/2021 08:03

I do not care if she goes or not, her showing up for me means absolutely nothing. All this talk of how great it is her showing support and standing up for women, did she show that much support in standing up for women when the press write nudtruths leaked from her aides, no she sat back and stayed silent.

Is she going to speak out and provide support to any causes for women, of course not its too political to do that.

Therefore turning up does absolutely nothing, she is coming from a position where she has security 24/7 and will never face having to worry about something happening to her as she walks home.

What power do you believe her to have over the media? Do you think her fanning the flames would have helped, or would the media have likely manipulated what she said to stoke division? I agree that MM should have been better supported, I don't think the burden of that falls to Kate. She does a lot for women's charities already, so I'm not sure what you mean by that comment. She didn't used to have 24/7 security, was her experience not valid? Did she never walk in fear because she saw into the future that she would have security? She can still understand and show empathy.

KM hardly controls what the papers put in their front page!

And the solution is - as I have done for 20 years now - don't buy the papers, or give their websites clicks they don't deserveZ because you are right, they are run by men and will never call men out on their violent crimes. They'll always miss the Mark when it comes to women
