Help please.. sold something on eBay buyer had paid for second class Royal Mail postage. NOT TRACKED.
They are now saying item hasn't arrived. I've sent proof of postage which has their postcode on.
They've opened a case asking for tracking info.. but they didn't pay for tracked postage. So how does that work? I'm I going to have to refund them, even though I have a receipt with which proves I posted the item?

Ebay will require you to refund, you then have a class against Royal Mail. Its a pain.

NoMoreMuchin · 13/03/2021 11:15
  • a claim against RM!
Russell19 · 13/03/2021 11:50

You can claim as item lost. How much was it worth?

I was the buyer in the same situation. Item didn't arrive but seller had the post office receipt with my postcode on. I didn't get a refund 🤬

Ninkanink · 13/03/2021 12:03

I know it won’t help you now but I send everything I sell on eBay ‘signed for’ because even though it costs me a bit more (I pay all postage costs), it means I always have tracking and people can’t take the piss (which some do) and even if it does legitimately get lost it means I’m covered.

OneForTheJourney · 13/03/2021 12:10

@OohImBlindedByTheLights I've just looked at the receipt, it's got a reference number. Says it was attempted to be delivered on 2nd March, and they needed to rearrange delivery. Hmm maybe they didn't get a card left? Not sure why they are chasing me when it's been tried to be delivered

OP posts:
OneForTheJourney · 13/03/2021 12:11

I didn't realise the reference number was a kind of tracking number. When I typed the number in a few days ago when they contacted me, it didn't work. Maybe the website wasn't working/maybe I typed the number in wrong 🙈

I send so much that I just post it all untracked and on the odd occasion something doesn’t arrive I just refund it and take it as a loss

I make sure anything going without tracking is less than £20

JonSnowedUnder · 13/03/2021 12:18

If it's down as attempted delivery get in touch with the buyer and tell them clearly they need to contact PO, give them tracking no so they can check the website themselves. It will stay at their local PO for a month after attempted delivery so they should have time to get it.

I had something similar but the buyer didn't collect and hadn't told me until about 3 months after they bought the item. EBay backed me which I was surprised about.

VerityWibbleWobble · 13/03/2021 12:27

@OneForTheJourney where on the receipt in the number you used please?

Ninkanink · 13/03/2021 12:39

Send them a photo on eBay email of your receipt with the reference number and the tracking info. That should be enough to cover you.

RubyWooRed · 13/03/2021 12:44

You need to enter the reference number from your PO receipt into the “tracking details “ part on the eBay screen
It’s in your selling / sold items / whatever the item was.

minniemoll · 13/03/2021 12:47

Not helpful in this situation, but in future, if you use Hermes (via Packlink on eBay) you get tracking included as standard, and it's a bit cheaper than RM.

They're also better at paying out if the item does go astray - they'll pay the amount you sold it for, RM will only pay what you paid for it (and ask for a receipt!)

OneForTheJourney · 13/03/2021 17:40

@VerityWibbleWobble this is a receipt off google with the reference circled, not my actual receipt.

@Ninkanink the case that's been opened doesn't have the option to add a photo unfortunately

OneForTheJourney · 13/03/2021 17:43

@JonSnowedUnder I've contacted the buyer. They've re-arranged delivery apparently.

Ninkanink · 13/03/2021 17:45

Looks like it’s been solved. I’m sure I sent a photo through the case last time this happened to me but I can’t remember how as I’ve only done it once.

You should enter the reference number on the sale page under ‘add tracking’ etc. It is here that the eBay team will verify - with no details on the sale then a claim will be found on then buyers side

It should be possible to photo of the receipt to the case in a message to the buyer as a response, add a photo to the message

coronafiona · 14/04/2021 13:36

Can you guys advise. I sold something which had a mark on- a genuine mistake, I hadn't spotted it when listing. Buyer has sent it back demanding I pay for both postage costs and is being really unpleasant in her messages. Should I be paying her back?

I'm not doing this any more people are just nasty Sad

BerniesMittens · 14/04/2021 14:13

If she's returned it because of a mark that wasn't mentioned (albeit by mistake) then really you should pay return postage on it.

Apologise, tell her it was a genuine mistake and refund her.

BerniesMittens · 14/04/2021 14:14

Oh and than block her.

lljkk · 14/04/2021 14:39

What BerniesM said.

Tommika · 14/04/2021 15:10

When you pay do it via eBays process as a partial refund which ensures you get the appropriate portion of fees back
