F1 2021 and we have a Schumacher on the grid again

In the absence of a F1 forum I'd like to chat about all things F1 Grand Prix.

How will the season go? How will the newest Schumacher fare ?

I can't wait for the first race.

DH reminded me that Russell did the two races when LH had Covid I'd completely forgotten.

It was a right mess of a race but lots to talk about it made riveting viewing and you don't always get that. We were all yelling at the screen.

I am absolutely obsessed with Angela and her looking after Lewis. She is brilliant, he doesn't have to worry about anything. I thought he had a migraine or something, but then on the podium he looked fine as ever. I see Max sloped off though...

Angelcupcake · 06/12/2021 12:55

Lewis and Angela seem to have such a lovely relationship, he seems to get along with all the team I think...
Yes max was having a bit of a silent tantrum! Such children :)
In a way I want max to be penalised for driving recklessly IMO but at the same time, it would be a shame if that meant that next week's race was ruined... If there's no longer any real competition

Twospaniels · 06/12/2021 13:01

That track seemed so dangerous, so narrow and no escape routes. As soon as anyone touched the barrier, they had to have a safety car so the could clear debris, whereas on purpose built tracks that would be away from the main race line.

Max is so hot headed and reckless. There was clearly a lack of communication as Lewis didn’t appear to know he was meant to go by and retake his place.

His PA, Angela, seems to anticipate his every need. I wonder how she juggles husband, children and Lewis! I read online her salary is £100,000 which doesn’t seem that much somehow.

I think we could all do with an Angela. Grin

In the end Max got a 5 second penalty and gave the place back. But you are right I don't want next week's race ruined.

Mazepin is such a liability, he always seems to be in trouble.

Did you see Geri Halliwell floating around the Red Bull garage in her usual white get up? Christian will be needing a bit of TLC I would imagine.

Yes, when I first saw the track I thought it was just the narrow pit lane but it was all like that. And the marshalls running about grabbing bits of car from the track. Yikes.

I do wonder how Angela's family feel about her job, she has 3 children IIRC. They can't see much of her, but on the other hand she loves it and it would be difficult for LH without her.

Angelcupcake · 06/12/2021 13:21

I think the track was actually purpose built though, actually designed to be exciting and to look like a street circuit... But looks like they went a bit too far... Poor mick Schumacher, felt sorry for him too with his crash.
I also really like lewis' relationship with bono on the radio...

Angelcupcake · 06/12/2021 13:30

Oh I didn't realise that max has actually got a further 10 sec penalty and 2 points...i thought he might actually get disqualified... So next week's race is going to be very fierce then!

LadyOfMisrule · 06/12/2021 13:31

"2021 and we have a Schumacher on the grid again"

I know this was originally about Mick. I'd say Max was closer to exhibiting Michael's behaviour, though. He's rammed the opposition, been physically aggressive to his opponents off the track, gained places when subsidiary teams were ordered out of the , and generally approaches each race with a "win at any cost" mentality. The world of racing has changed, though, and I can't see him getting away with this behaviour for much longer.

Laughingravy · 06/12/2021 23:58

I fear if Max doesn't temper his aggressive streak someone will get hurt.

Angelcupcake · 07/12/2021 02:01

Agree he has a win at any cost mentality. The thing is he has just got away with it. A 10 sec penalty is meaningless because bottas was so far behind. I think he's going to try and crash lewis out at the first turn next week. And I think that his dad and Christian are encouraging that sort of behaviour. I was a child when Micheal Schumacher was racing so I don't really know, will have to look back on some old videos! Educate myself 🙂

Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2021 07:07

I have been yelling at the TV a long time. When these two were racing each other especially. Angry

Angelcupcake · 07/12/2021 13:03

Oh wow... I see what you mean! It's like history repeating itself... Schumacher looks pleased as punch with himself in that video as well! No shame. At least Max sulks and pouts when he knows he has done something wrong :)... It's not really funny though, I don't want anything bad happening to Lewis...

Angelcupcake · 07/12/2021 13:12

I see that nobody smashed their headphones back then! 😂

CampagVelocet · 07/12/2021 13:36

Max will try and take Lewis out. As long as Lewis doesn't win, Max has the championship I think. So it seems to me that Max will do all he can to stop Lewis coming first. I think he absolutely has it in him to kill or seriously injure someone in the pursuit of glory. He just doesn't seem to care. And he pouts and sulks when he doesn't get the wins he thinks he deserves. Someone on Twitter said 'if Max raced Max neither would finish' which I think is very true.

bethabean · 07/12/2021 13:37

How did I not know there was an F1 thread?!
My day has been made Grin

TonTonMacoute · 07/12/2021 14:41

For those of us olds who remember F1 in the 1970s, when so many drivers got badly injured or killed, Max's behaviour is just unforgivably dangerous.

He is an arrogant young man whose sense of entitlement is being puffed up by Christian Horner and by his own DF. He doesn't need to drive so dangerously, he is a brilliant driver in a great car.

If he wins this championship because of his dangerous antics it would be a travesty, but ironically Lewis has a super cool head, and seems to drive even better the more crap he has to put up with!

Angelcupcake · 07/12/2021 14:44

It's scary that they are going into this race and we all think that max is going to be stupid... Scary that the FIA are allowing that to happen...
I can't see how there is any glory or satisfaction in a win that comes from taking either one or both cars out of the race.
Also, seems that he did brake test Hamilton very aggressively... 2.4g deceleration 😐. Apparently an emergency stop in a normal road car would result in about 0.8g...excuse my ignorance of such things! Not sure how lewis came out of that one so well.

Agreed. I've been avidly watching F1 since the early 80s. Max certainly displays a lack of discipline and petulance on the track sometimes, which thankfully due to much better safety, hasn't caused any serious issues yet.

I think Horner needs to take stock, there's definite fuel being added with his antics.

Twitter (as often is the case!) has been a bit of a sh1t show this week with both 'sides' arguing over the race last weekend.

I just hope it's a good, tight and clean race on Sunday.

Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2021 17:23

Yes Frank was the vision of calm, no Bose were harmed. Grin
Mindareno · 07/12/2021 17:29

I expect I’m being very dense, but now that max has had the 2 point deduction, why does he still win if they both fail to finish? I thought they were level on points prior to that penalty?

givethatbabyaname · 07/12/2021 17:41

Happy to find this thread!

I have a sense of foreboding for Sunday, Max will stop at nothing. He and Horner are two of a kind: absolutely ruthless. Horner is just a bit older. They'd make excellent hedge fund managers.

I take comfort from Abu Dhabi being a dull course. That might keep Max in check.

Lewis has a lot going on: to win, but knowing his competitor would be ready to take him out. How can that not make you put safety first and so almost certainly lose? I just don't know what I'd do in his shoes, it's in his DNA to fight.

Max is the ugly face of F1 (one of them, at least). I just wish the FIA had the balls to rein him in. He needs stopping before the worst happens. When it does happen, we'll all say "told you so". And, amateur psychology here, I wonder if he's like this because he needs to do better than Daddy. Just, tragic.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 07/12/2021 17:49

Aha! Have found my people!

I have been very supportive of Red Bull this season, especially as I am a big fan of Perez, but Max's attitude and toddler-stroppiness is getting a bit much. I do worry about Sunday a lot, in terms of outcomes but I suppose we'll see what qualifying brings.

Is Abu Dhabi high speed? Mercedes has been so very strong the last few races and I feel Red Bull has dropped off a bit, so it might be moot.

OGenkiDesuKa · 07/12/2021 18:00

Oh yay an f1 thread!

Angelcupcake · 07/12/2021 18:04

Mindareno, my understanding is that he has been given 2 penalty points on his licence, but it doesn't affect the championship points, and it doesn't really affect his licence either because they have their licences wiped clean for the start of the new season anyway. At least I think that's how it works

Angelcupcake · 07/12/2021 18:13

I think that the Silverstone incident shows that Lewis is prepared to play Max at his own game when there is enough riding on it. Just hope that his experience and cool head sees him through, he's not just going to back off and let Max take it I don't think.
