I Know it's another Harry and Meghan thread, but isn't that interview actually quite damaging politically, it's not just salacious. It's geopoliticalaly harmful.

Madness.

It's thoughtless, surely?

So incendiary.

In what way is it ‘geopolitically harmful’? Do you think Biden is going to invade, with an enraged Oprah at his side, waving an Archewell flag?

ShrikeAttack · 09/03/2021 07:17

Well, The Commonwealth is a loosely connected group of countries that work quite positively together

Why potentially stick the boot in that?

GreenBalaclava · 09/03/2021 07:21

I guess they don't really care about that any more?

Because daddy stopped your pocket money.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 09/03/2021 07:23

I dont think the commonwealth is going to crumble over this. I think everyones just going to get back on with things.

flashbac · 09/03/2021 07:25

Are you always this melodramatic?

Silurian · 09/03/2021 07:26

But how exactly do you think the commonwealth is going to be impacted by an internal spat within the RF?

Kinsters · 09/03/2021 07:28

I live in a commonwealth country though not one with the queen as head of state. Most people I've spoken to think Harry and Meghan are just embarrassing themselves.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 09/03/2021 07:29

Yes. We must keep secret from the commonwealth the dysfunction of the Firm. God forbid they should be allowed to assess for themselves what sort of people are at the helm. Can’t be letting them find out anything. They might make their own decisions.

😂😂😂

o you think Biden is going to invade, with an enraged Oprah at his side, waving an Archewell flag?

No. But that is quite funny.

It's soft politics. Framing the UK as a country led by racist maniacs isn't helpful. Or substantially
true.

I can understand why they want to get away and have media engagements on their own terms. I can also understand their security worries which must also feed into their financial concerns.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 09/03/2021 07:34

I understand soft politics (having done politics as a degree), but I still dont think you're right

The head of the commonwealth isn’t hereditary. The commonwealth heads of government already made the decision that Charles will be the next one (arguably because it was the queen’s stated preference) but after that they can, and in my opinion should, decide not to have William.
Damnloginpopup · 09/03/2021 07:35

If I read things right, Romeo and Juliet rewrote themselves into the cast of King Lear.

Can't help thinking it's Much Ado About Nothing.

Aspiringmatriarch · 09/03/2021 07:36

No.

Usagi12 · 09/03/2021 07:36

By taking away her passport, financial access the ability to make her own decisions etc she's effectively accusing them of modern day slavery which is illegal. This is a very serious claim.

Porseb · 09/03/2021 07:40

I'm from a Commonwealth country and I see no benefit or point to the Commonwealth.

It's a talking shop, patronising colonial former masters gracing poor African and Asian countries with pointless meetings and conventions.

I can see why Ireland decided against joining it.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 09/03/2021 07:40

Commonwealth didn’t crumble over an (alleged) sex offender in the royal family. I think it’ll be okay over this.

ShrikeAttack · 09/03/2021 07:44

Why Lets? I see that interview as really damaging.

Boris Johnson's comment was the most sensible thing I've ever heard from him.

Maybe I'm allowing myself to be influenced by their rhetoric, and the rest of the world doesn't actually give a fuck.

Biden commented though. If we still consider the US to be culturally dominant, it does matter, these things are not insignificant.

That was the only bit that struck me out of the part I saw. WHO took her passport, keys and driving licence? Presumably they didn’t nick them from her bag, so someone asked her to hand them over, and she did — what reason was given? Safe-keeping? Presumably she asked for them to be returned — what reason was given for them being withheld?

Keys to what — car, KP apartment, Frogmore Cottage?

twelly · 09/03/2021 07:48

I think joe Biden should not have said anything - he like us does not know the context. I am afraid that this interview will damage U.K./US relations.

sashagabadon · 09/03/2021 07:52

Any country in the commonwealth could leave if it’s people wanted to do there must be benefits. Having Queen as head of state stops the need for a presidential style of governance like the US so that could be part of it for some countries?

Porseb · 09/03/2021 07:55

Having British monarchy grace the Commonwealth Head of States meetings props up and gives credence to countless dictators and corrupt regimes too.

So yes, I can see why some countries choose to remain part of the Commonwealth.

Practicalprat · 09/03/2021 07:57

Are so thick to have not realised the damage they could cause between USA and England. What a selfish pair they are.
Would anyone else get away with saying these things about the Royal Family. They have nothing to back up their accusations.
