I Know it's another Harry and Meghan thread, but isn't that interview actually quite damaging politically, it's not just salacious. It's geopoliticalaly harmful.

Madness.

It's thoughtless, surely?

So incendiary.

@Porseb

I'm from a Commonwealth country and I see no benefit or point to the Commonwealth.

It's a talking shop, patronising colonial former masters gracing poor African and Asian countries with pointless meetings and conventions.

I can see why Ireland decided against joining it.

Ireland only definitively left the Commonwealth when it became a Republic in 1949, though the exact situation had been somewhat ambiguous since 1936, with Ireland and Britain taking different interpretations of Ireland’s status as ‘External associated country’. The rationale for staying as long as it did in any sense was because becoming a republic more starkly underlined the separate status of NI.

India obviously chose differently the following year by becoming a republic but remaining in the Commonwealth.

@ShrikeAttack

Well, The Commonwealth is a loosely connected group of countries that work quite positively together

Why potentially stick the boot in that?

The racism of certain members of the British monarchy has been pointed out several times before. Prince Phillip's remarks on various occasions, Princess Michael of Kent's brooch, yes even Prince Harry's nazi outfit.

Not to mention Prince Andrew and Epstein or Prince Charles and Savile, or any of the other things which reflect negatively on the royals.

None of these things have caused a geopolitical disaster or the end of the Commonwealth. Why would an interview with a sensationalist talk show host?

eaglejulesk · 09/03/2021 08:27

I'm in a Commonwealth country and I'm sick and tired of Harry and Meghan. The more they whine the more sympathy I have with the RF.

I foresee this week's events being a precursor to attacks on monarchies around the globe including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Thailand. History has told us that has the potential to create vacuums which can be very dangerous.

Practicalprat · 09/03/2021 08:33

Oh and I thought MM said she’d never move back to USA while Trump was in office.Just another little untruth.

Kinsters · 09/03/2021 09:12

Re the keys: If you have staff you don't need keys. You have a driver to open your gate or a guard on the gate to open it for you if you're driving yourself and then at home you have security/housekeeper so either they will open the door for you or it will be unlocked.

I don't know if that's how it is with the royal family but I really can't see them locking/unlocking their own doors...

Actually wait, we know they don't carry keys! Because of that time Andrew was so enraged at having to wait for someone to open the gate.

ChoccyJules · 09/03/2021 09:16

Looks as though it was Biden’s Press Secretary who commented - on what the president might generally think about people sharing their MH difficulties. So not really a quote from the top.

However I am all for the invasion from Oprah, Joe and the Archwell flag, sounds hilarious!

I don’t think the US can lecture us on racism. We both need to sort that out. And the RF don’t run the country really so it’s not that political.

FoxyTheFox · 09/03/2021 10:48

In what way is it ‘geopolitically harmful’? Do you think Biden is going to invade, with an enraged Oprah at his side, waving an Archewell flag?

This is the buddy movie we all need to see.

Silurian · 09/03/2021 13:00

@ShrikeAttack

o you think Biden is going to invade, with an enraged Oprah at his side, waving an Archewell flag?

No. But that is quite funny.

It's soft politics. Framing the UK as a country led by racist maniacs isn't helpful. Or substantially
true.

Well, I agree, but as the US was, until January, actually led by a racist maniac who was still received at Buckingham Palace, I'm not sure it's any kind of killer blow to the Special Relationship.

@Damnloginpopup

If I read things right, Romeo and Juliet rewrote themselves into the cast of King Lear.

Can't help thinking it's Much Ado About Nothing.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Why potentially stick the boot in that?

Because daddy stopped your pocket money.

🤣

And wouldn't phone him back.

YogaLite · 09/03/2021 13:26

I am a bit politically removed from the issue but isn't a Commonwealth inherited from colonial past?

SomethingOnce · 09/03/2021 13:58

Transatlantic It’s a Royal Knockout! 2021 needs this so much Grin

saracorona · 09/03/2021 14:21

I have to agree that it will cause problems for the future especially between USA and Great Britain. Just go on American news and see how they talk about us now as a country.

Really sly stunt they pulled, they drop an allegation but no context and who said it. If they're going to say something so incendiary say it all. I had zero interest in Harry and Meghan but I now really dislike them.

CarolinaWeeper · 09/03/2021 14:29

I've been a supporter of Harry and Meghan for a long time but I agree with @saracorona, if you're going to throw a grenade about racism then you should make sure it lands.... otherwise you're just telling half a story and leaving things wide open to speculation on who or who didn't say whatever it was that they supposedly said.
