What’s this on DD’s finger? (Pic included)

Pharmacist says not a wart or a cyst, he thinks she’s been bit by something.

It started off looking like a shiny small spot and has gradually grown. Its now got a yellowish type of skin over it, the camera isn’t picking it up but it’s also got what looks like little black pinpricks over the top of it. Red around the outside and DD says it’s itchy (and hurts if she touches it/bangs it). It gets a white film over the top of it when she has it in water but the skin doesn’t appear to come off, no fluid etc is leaking from it either.

I’m not confident it’s a bite, but she’s been given bite and sting cream by the pharmacist. We did call the doctor but were refused an appointment and told to see pharmacist as it was likely a wart.

DD would just really like to know what it is, she’s convinced her finger is going to fall off and no amount of telling her it won’t has her convinced Grin

Would have helped if I’d included the pic, sorry!

I’ve no idea, I can’t see it.

QueenOfPain · 08/03/2021 16:10

I can now, it looks like a wart or a blister.

Is she doing a lot of gaming or holding something that rests on that place on her finger?

Goodness that's quite large

Gassylady · 08/03/2021 16:11

Has she had any contact with sheep or goats? Looks rather like Orf - always a favourite in old picture atlases of skin diseases Grin

mamatocaptainchaos · 08/03/2021 16:11

Looks like a wart!

dementedpixie · 08/03/2021 16:11

Does it feel firm or like there's liquid underneath

ChancesWhatChances · 08/03/2021 16:13

@QueenOfPain very rarely has a shot of the wii but other than that doesn’t game, should have said too it’s her middle finger not index one. She doesn’t really hold anything for long amounts of time bar a phone (and even then it’s a phone call not texting/playing etc so it’s usually held in her full hand up to her ear).

It looks like a herpatic whitlow. Does she get cold sores? You usually get them from touching coldsores. Since it's the herpes virus I would make sure she doesn't pick it and get her to use her other hand when wiping or washing herself as it can spread to other parts of her body.

ChancesWhatChances · 08/03/2021 16:16

@Gassylady no sheep or goats, though she’d argue she lives with two younger pigs Grin

@mamatocaptainchaos that was my first thought, even looks like pictures of warts I’ve googled but the pharmacist was adamant it wasn’t.

@dementedpixie feels mostly firm, not like there’s fluid in it and hurts if pressed

Is this the only one? A few months ago DD had what looked like blisters on her hands - it started with one and there was that one which was big, but she landed up with three in total - and doctor decided they were impetigo and gave her an anti biotic cream. She was mildly concerned it might actually have been a Covid symptom as she said that children often have odd skin things with Covid but as we were self isolating at the time she didn't take that further. Yours looks more "solid" than hers, but not sure if that's just the picture?

ChancesWhatChances · 08/03/2021 16:19

@DaisyHeadMaisey she’s never had a cold sore herself but her younger brother does get them, had one at the start of this year iirc (though he himself has never had anything like DD’s finger). But thanks for that, I’ll cover it with something just in case so she’s not running the risk of spreading it elsewhere

Is it a whitlow ?

ChancesWhatChances · 08/03/2021 16:21

@BlingLoving it’s just the one she’s got, definitely solid feeling. Nothing leaks or moves if you press on it. Hope your DD is recovered now, impetigo can’t have been fun!

Is it an abscess?

I can't remember how solid it was but it definitely looked more blistery than warty if that makes sense? I don't think I could touch it to test how solid as DD would scream in pain every time (she's a bit of a drama llama). She was fine except for the blisters actually so if it was impetigo, we got off lightly! Here's a picture....

Has she been playing outside? I get these sort of blisters when bitten by red ants, is it very itchy?
Try some anti-histamine, piriton syrup or similar. If it improves for a couple of hours you will know it’s a bite, if not you’ll know it’s not.
Keep an eye on the redness, even with a bite/sting you can get an infection and need antibiotics.

Notavegan · 08/03/2021 16:29

The black dots sound like a verucca

dementedpixie · 08/03/2021 16:34

Verrucas are found on the feet
Could be a wart though

sunflowersandbuttercups · 08/03/2021 16:39

Regular warts can also have black dots.

It looks like a wart to me. I've struggled with them on/off for years.

ChancesWhatChances · 08/03/2021 16:53

Here’s a bit clearer pic of it. Excuse the blue pen, drew around the red ring on the outside with to make sure it’s not spreading any

Looks even more like a wart now!

ChancesWhatChances · 08/03/2021 16:56

@BlingLoving it started off looking like a blister (or a shiny fluid filled spot), the yellow skin/black dots etc only sprung up over the weekend. Didn’t start hurting or have the red ring around it until they appeared too.

@SilverBirchWithout only in the school playground, it’s been too wet and cold here to play out much though

Looks like a big wart

BuddhaAtSea · 08/03/2021 16:58

Looks like a verruca. Has she got any anywhere else?
