DH and I had a few wines last night and fell down a YouTube rabbit hole listening to 90s music. We then got into a heated debate about what the best song of the 90s was.

My vote - Set You Free by NTrance

His vote - Live Forever by Oasis

For clarity, we were both mid teens during this decade.

What's your stand out song of the 90s?

This thread has brought back so many memories!

I'll add pure shores by all saints
Pray by take that
If god will send his angels by u2
In the end by linkin park
Ace of base the sign

Cam77 · 06/03/2021 23:51

Too many to mention! If pushed: Common People, Live Forever, A Design for Life. Arguably the three best songs of three of the biggest bands. Brilliant lyrically and musically.

Love this thread

Loved the 90s my coming of age decade and I started university towards the end.

I walked down the aisle to Unfinished Sympathy. I wanted something really powerful and uplifting but not classical and that really fit the bill. It still gives me goosebumps, as does much of Massive Attack - Protection, Teardrop.

I was a Britopop, dance, R&B and hip hop fan. Loved it all. Went to loads and loads of clubs.

I’m going to add Morcheeba. Can’t pick one but I saw them at a festival just a couple of years ago and they were sublime.

@APJ1

Meredith Brooks - Bitch
YES!!!! My friend and I used to spend our evenings at a pool hall and we knew the code for this on the jukebox off by heart.
Gowherewindandfiremeettogether · 06/03/2021 23:59

This song was released before I was born
but Seal - crazy is one of the coolest songs from the 90's for me

Cam77 · 07/03/2021 00:00

I’m always a bit bemused by the mad love for The Masterplan. I like the verses but the chorus is a bit simple, verging on naff - albeit very catchy. Fantastic song for a bside, but IMO Oasis have got a dozen better songs themselves, never mind best of the decade. Just my opinion!

EggyPegg · 07/03/2021 00:00

@ThePontiacBandit

Yes AJP1 that’s a cracking tube, it’s on one of my 90s female playlists along with Chains by Tina Arena and Stay (I missed you) by Lisa Loeb.
Snap!!

I have to stop myself going full diva when Chains comes on whilst I'm running.

Ticklyrain · 07/03/2021 00:02

Some absolute cracking blasts from the past here. Has inspired me to listen to PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me for the first time in a long time

My nomination is Mazzy Star - Fade into you

EggyPegg · 07/03/2021 00:03

Alanis Morisette has to get a mention, that album was played to death.

God yes. This time was THE album to have (I still have mine)

I'm going to put Tha Crossroads by BoneThugs n Harmony in this list too.

Branleuse · 07/03/2021 00:03

Wheres me jumper - sultans of ping fc

I honestly couldnt pick. I love early 90s music. I was 14 in 1990 and I loved all the grunge indie stuff that was coming out stone roses, wonderstuff, james, primal scream, pulp, blur, nirvana. There was also the rave scene starting and there was the shamen, klf, altern8, prodigy. I also remember getting into bjork and red hot chilli peppers.

Killer - Adamski Angels - Robbie!

I love so many of the songs mentioned. My ring tone is faithless - insomnia which gets people raving when my phone rings in the office Grin

I saw Faithless at Glastonbury the year before they announced that they were splitting up. It was an incredible set and naturally everyone went nuts when they played Insomnia.
OppsUpsSide · 07/03/2021 00:07

Also, the 90s was the spiritual home of the novelty song the greatest of which is surely I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred.
