DH and I had a few wines last night and fell down a YouTube rabbit hole listening to 90s music. We then got into a heated debate about what the best song of the 90s was.

My vote - Set You Free by NTrance

His vote - Live Forever by Oasis

For clarity, we were both mid teens during this decade.

What's your stand out song of the 90s?

@IstandwithJackieWeaver

Won't be a popular choice I suspect, but All I Want for Christmas by Mariah Carey.

Ten Storey Love Song by the Stone Roses. Bully Boy, Shed Seven. Girl from Mars, Ash
Loved 90's. Saw the Stone Roses at Glasgow Green in 1990 and went on to see so many great bands throughout the 90's. Very happy memories.

StooriMidori · 06/03/2021 22:57

No way could I pick just one! All of these are belters (especially Love Spreads). I'm an indie kid at heart too but the 90's gave us some cracking dance tunes!

Feels So Good - QFX
Let Me Show You - Camisra
Sandstorm - Darude
Sunchyme - Dario G

It was the golden era of Happy Hardcore aswell, who remembers Scooter, Children of the Night and Discoland?!

Here we, here we, here we fuckin go!

Wildswim · 06/03/2021 23:00

Fiddlersgreen · 06/03/2021 23:04

This thread is fantastic! The 90s are my favourite music era but I can’t, won’t, pick a fave! Too many great songs!
I need an Alexa to play me 90s pop!!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 06/03/2021 23:04

What a decade for music. I can’t pick a song. Honestly there was a few years where I would buy 2-3 singles a week every week.

I’m going to be adding to this thread so I will start with:

Seal - Crazy

Amrapaali · 06/03/2021 23:06

It does sound a bit naff when I listen to it now. But aeons ago, I thought it was THE most wonderful and meaningful song ever. Obviously I was a teen and felt no one shared my excellent taste Grin

Amrapaali · 06/03/2021 23:06

Sorry that was to @EggyPegg

CocoPark · 06/03/2021 23:07

Sooo hard! Amazing decade. Sorry can't choose 1 but a few that spring to mind:

Baby One More Time
Ride On Time
Vogue
Don't Speak
Don't Look Back in Anger

PrancerandDancer · 06/03/2021 23:07

I was 13 at the end of the 90's, heavily in boybands and spice girls!

So 13 year old me would say ...
I Want You Back - NSYNC was a firm favourite, Five - Until the End of Time... well anything by Five actually.

Grown up me ... definitely New Radials - Get what you Give, never fails to make me smile. I remember first hearing it on the big screen in the food hall of the Trafford Centre! Not sure why this stuck with me Grin

Wildswim · 06/03/2021 23:07

Bryan Adams - Please forgive me

AgentCooper · 06/03/2021 23:13

I was 5 in 1990 and my favourite 90s songs are all from that early part of the decade when I was still wee.

Charles and Eddie - Would I Lie To You (actually heard this in Morrison’s yesterday and felt very emotional, it’s gorgeous)
Shakespeare’s Sister - Stay
Dina Carroll - Don’t Be a Stranger
Corona - Rhythm of the Night (I still listen to this all the time)

Also Stay Together by Suede, You’re in a Bad Way by St Etienne and Something Changed by Pulp, which I got into later Smile

EiffelPower · 06/03/2021 23:13

Ooh yes, Seal-Crazy, REM Losing my Religion, Dépêche Mode-Personal Jesus,

APJ1 · 06/03/2021 23:15

Meredith Brooks - Bitch

ThePontiacBandit · 06/03/2021 23:16

I have found my people! August bank holiday Radio X did a top 100 90s tunes based on air play, all day. It was epic! I believe Bitter sweet symphony by The Verve was number 1.

So so many great songs from that decade. Couldn’t just chose one but some of my indie/Brit pop favourites are:

  • Disco 2000 by Pulp (I remember when it came out we couldn’t imagine that far ahead and finishing school!)
  • Oh yeah by Ash
  • Waking up by Elastica
  • To the end by Blur
  • Sale of the century by Sleeper
  • Ladykillers by Lush
  • Only get what you give by New radicals

There were some cracking dance tunes about as well, Set you freeeeeee and Born slippy were great.

Not to forget the pop - has anyone mentioned Hit me baby one more time yet?! Also I really did love S Club...late 90s for Bring it all back and S Club party. I think Reach was 2000 though.

ThePontiacBandit · 06/03/2021 23:17

Yes AJP1 that’s a cracking tube, it’s on one of my 90s female playlists along with Chains by Tina Arena and Stay (I missed you) by Lisa Loeb.
