This isn't a royal family bashing thread..just interested to know how people would vote once the Queen has died and the was a vote on whether to keep the royal family or not.. a simple yes ( to keep ) or no.

Yes but I think Princess Anne should step into the Queen's shoes.

badpuma · 06/03/2021 13:20

Yes but I'd rather it was much lower key and a lot cheaper. More like the Norwegian royal family.

That doesn't make any sense, the whole point of a monarchy is you don't get any say at all.

Harry and Meghan have shone light on how stuck in the mud things really are. Much had been said about her shaking things up and being a breath fresh air around the wedding time but not much has changed.

It was good while it lasted but I think it’s time to move on now. I think Andrew’s shenanigans have shed light on what the “spare” can get up to when they have amassed wealth and responsibilities without a sense of direction. Just shows how toxic it can be when the sole focus is on the “heir” and the “spare” is just cast aside. You’d think they’d learn from Margaret but it’s like history repeating itself. She apparently had doubts about marrying Townsend but despite all that she clearly had not much to do compared to her sister, the Queen.

I think they have enough private wealth, property and jewels, not to mention contacts, so it’s not like they’ll be out on the streets or without a job. They can still support charities and not just be hired by Netflix and Disney et al because of what titles they hold.

They can all finally find freedom Grin

The trouble with getting rid of the monarchy is that there would be a referendum with a yes / no vote and. Then it would be over to politicians to deliver.

I think politicians would deliver a replacement which worked for them (aka the US system) they're all too self serving to adopt an Irish style system.

That doesn't make any sense, though -- why would the US system 'work' for British politicians? Are you saying that parliament would abolish the office of PM and create some kind of uber-role as HoS? Why would they?

Surely the most obvious thing to do is to look around at other parliamentary democracies with elected HoS and work out which of the monarch's roles can/should be replicated and which couldn't -- eg who would be head of the C of E after the abolition of the monarchy?

10000% NO. It's time to do away with the them and us mentaility and respecting the legacy of colonialism. All citizens should just be regular members of the public.

Well if the alternative is president Johnson, absolutely cling on to the royals for dear life. And I'm no royalist.
