This isn't a royal family bashing thread..just interested to know how people would vote once the Queen has died and the was a vote on whether to keep the royal family or not.. a simple yes ( to keep ) or no.

@Kendodd

Well if the alternative is president Johnson, absolutely cling on to the royals for dear life. And I'm no royalist.
Why would that be the alternative?

No

Why do people talk about Trump, Blair and Putin as alternatives? The role would not be political and have no inherent power. Additionally, the point is that even if you do end up with a less-than0deal President, you can get rid of them in 4 or 5 years...maybe even before in cases that would warrant an 'impeachment'-type removal.

I mean, just imagine, you're just as likely to end up with the royal version of Hitler but you'd be stuck with them with no option to get rid

Someone says this, or Trump, or Putin in every similar thread. Can you really not tell the difference between an office like the PM or the US presidency, with huge political power, and the largely ceremonial role that would be held by an elected HofS, and which would be highly unlikely to be of any appeal to a career politician or a power-crazed maniac? And even if they put themselves forward as candidates, that’s the point of an election. You can choose to vote for a better candidate.

You didn’t vote for BJ, or the Queen, or Charles, but you would get to vote for an elected HoS. Who leaves office again after the end of their term, or can be removed for wrongdoing.

President Johnson could do far less harm than PM Johnson.
MindyStClaire · 06/03/2021 14:52

No.

Precisely because there is no option to skip Charles and go to William or Anne or Boris or Trump or anyone else, even if every single person in the country believed it would be a better choice.

DoubleTweenQueen · 06/03/2021 14:54

Yes - if C&C, W&K et al, Anne, E&S only

Yes but let’s skip Charles and get Will on the throne.
That isn't how it works. You want a monarchy? Then you get whoever the first born of the last monarch was, no matter how useless they appear.

Incidentally: No.
