I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

The Tall Guy. Richard Curtis' first film with Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson and Jeff Goldblum. I can't find it anywhere and I'd love to watch it again.

Think Richard Curtis has buried it Smile

I don't know why he would it's amazing. Makes you laugh and cry.

RA lines are brilliant. He says 'do you need to talk to someone about that?' Then something like 'for gods sake talk to someone then' I wish I could say that to lots of people.

Also there is this part when Emma Thompson explains how you can tell if people have been intimate if they make each other drinks without prompts or words really. It's very accurate.

Went The Day Well - quietly forgotten, surprisingly frank WW2 made and set film about a fictitious but successfully repelled German invasion.

Keeping mum is funny. Patrick Swayze is great.
I did watch a black comedy with Peter Dinkledge set around a funeral , lots of old brits were in it if but I can't remember the name of it?

Dancing Queen with Rik Mayal and Helena Bonham Carter. More of a one off drama than a film.
Clockwork with John Cleese. Both feature old British rail trains!

Orpheline · 05/03/2021 14:48

Untouchable (French)

True story about a quadriplegic millionaire and his unlikely carer. I've had to nag people to get them to watch this.
A dark comedy, but you'll cry too.
The most perfect film.

Yes seen pride , twice, lead actor died young
Loved breathless..richard gere might have had something to do with it
Muriels wedding...yes!
Wish you were here..also excellent
I think I need to start keeping a log of films I’ve seen
I’m forgetting more than I remember

Brassed off is good. I also enjoyed Pride. Only about 6 of us in the cinema for that one.
Brassed Off is brilliant! As is the Victoria Wood piss take of it Grin

Just thought of

Mon Oncle
Mr Hulot’s Holiday

Geekgirlmum · 05/03/2021 14:52

Blithe Spirit (1945) with Rex Harrison and the amazing Margaret Rutherford. One of my absolute favourites - and I refuse to watch the remake because I live this version so much

the80sweregreat · 05/03/2021 14:53

Victoria wood was good at piss takes ! Especially anything ' northern' !
I Miss her.

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 14:54

Frequency - odd time-bending story with Dennis Quaid.

or

Retroactive - similar time bending plot. James Belushi and Frank Whaley ...

speaking of which

Swimming with Sharks - sharp dark thriller with surprise twist with Kevin Spacey before he was Kevin Spacey ...

and James Belushi was in Dimenticare Palermo, which I saw in Paris as Oublier Palermo but which can be seen in English as "The Palermo Connection". An interesting premise for a political thriller.

You know when people sometimes say "I need to get out more" ? I think based on my list of rep film seen in some odd showins, I need to stay in more Grin

YesItsAPeacock · 05/03/2021 14:55

Pride is wonderful. I saw it at a meeting of my old trade union, with the real life Dai Donovan (the one played by Paddy Considine in the film) in attendance. He was one of the officers of my union at the time and gave a little talk about the film.

AmazingCoffee · 05/03/2021 14:56

I saw Swimming with Sharks also. I was in a Kevin Spacey phase (also loved The Ref with KS, Dennis Leary and Judy Davis). Both good films.

the80sweregreat · 05/03/2021 14:56

When I was about 15 many moons ago bbc two used to show old French films. Most were a bit racy and always had pretty young teens in them!
Rita sue and Bob too! That had a very young Victoria wood in it.

The most perfect film.

If we're straying into foreign films, La Lectrice is quite quirky.

And I defy anyone to watch Cyrano de Bergerac and not be impressed with the rhyming subtitles (courtesy of Anthony Burgess) or blub at the end.

ASnowman · 05/03/2021 14:59

I loved The Station Agent, Peter Dinklage inherits an old train station and moves in. He reluctantly makes friends with Bobby Cannavale and Patrician Clarkson. Funny and touching.

Also love Same Time Next year. Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn. They have an affair but meet once a year for years as they both change and society changes. A bit like the David Nicholls book One Day.

the80sweregreat · 05/03/2021 15:00

Ds2 loves the ' foot soldier ' films as they are so rubbish and funny. Lots of southend gangster types in them.

YesItsAPeacock · 05/03/2021 15:01

8 Femmes - a French musical comedy murder mystery. Great fun.

SpringisSpinning · 05/03/2021 15:02

The last TYCOON f scott fitzgerald - rob de niro

squashyhat · 05/03/2021 15:02

Bottle Rocket. 1996 film with Owen and Luke Wilson, directorial debut from Wes Anderson.

the80sweregreat · 05/03/2021 15:04

Sideways. Sandra oh is in it and very good.
Fish tank. That is very bleak.

FlibbertyGiblets · 05/03/2021 15:04

Dead Again, Kenneth and Emma, Jacobi and Garcia. Excellent noir, terribly complex, doesn't really work, I LOVE it.

squashyhat · 05/03/2021 15:05

Also The Dish with Sam Neill (2001) about a remote Australian tracking station which played a crucial role in the Apollo 11 mission.

Glassempty · 05/03/2021 15:06

Really glad to see Naked mentioned already, it's my favourite film ever although a bit dark for some tastes.

the80sweregreat · 05/03/2021 15:10

Little boy Tate. Jodie Foster starred and directed it.
