Weird question of the day - what smells like weed?

Other than the obvious?

At work, we have this really, really strong smell of weed. We’re pretty confident it’s not weed

You can only smell it in one place - at the bottom of the stairs from the offices into the workshop. There’s our stores to one side and then just the open work shop.

We’ve torn the stores apart - nothing in there, but you can barely smell it in there anyway.

No exterior walls, just metal stairs and a concrete floor. The wall for the stores is just a stud wall with plasterboard (but it’s only been plaster-boarded on one side of the stud wall). No ventilation pipes around that area and once you’re a few metres away from the stairs you can’t smell it.

It’s driving us all nuts as we cannot find where it’s coming from - where it’s at it’s strongest, there’s just nothing there.

The offices are on a mezzanine floor, above the stores area and you can’t smell it upstairs.

When you walk in first thing in the morning it absolutely stinks and everyone can smell it

Do you have another building attached? We kept on smelling weed really strongly at an old place of work and it turned out it was people in the premises next door smoking it in the basement! Or Maybe a passage next to the office where people gather to smoke it?

Growing oregano and used coffee.

Some plastics/silicones do. Like those weird rubbery bathmats.

I've no idea, but we had this in a hall of residence when I was at university. I remember discussing with one of the cleaners (when I was a temporary cleaner there in the holidays) how it had gone on for ages and the previous year she'd told the manager that it couldn't possibly be the occupant's weed habit because it was [my friend B]!

This was at least the third year it had been noticed.

I was going to suggest cat pee, in particular tom cat pee.

Is your work building adjoined to any other premises? If so, the smell could be coming through air vents from the adjoining premises.

I've smelled this in all kinds of places.. On the bus.. Outside a shop.. Family member went for their covid jab the other day and got back in the car stinking of it. They definitely had not been smoking it.. Am I going crazy or can you just smell it loads these days?

cheapo plastic shoes, some plastic packaging. I sometimes get a whiff of cannabis in shops when they're opening lots of stock packaging.

We once had a pair of toms canvas shoes that smelled really strongly of weed. They are made with natural hemp. Have you got anything fabricy which could be hemp?

An old landlord was convinced I was smoking (cigarettes) in our flat once because I'd been hoovering and the rubber belt thing was broken and it smelt like burning. So not quite like weed but that's one possibility?

DS1 has commented on a smell being weed when I think a similar smell is fox pee as the dog comes in smelling of it when he's been rummaging in the garden (which has weeds but no weed!)

I don't actually know what weed smells like though.

Can I ask this but with an outdoor/garden/plant lens? Are there plants that smell like weed? Or outdoor 'materials'? This has plagued me for a long time!

I've found some plastics and wetsuit material can smell like weed.

Building is detached and we have our own ventilation system - there’s no pipes or anything around where the smell is.

There is another building next door but there’s absolutely nothing between us - the exterior walls are no where near the smell

There’s definitely no one there smoking weed. It smells all of the time. If someone was breaking in to smoke weed then I would have though the smell would fade through out the day. The building alarms/cctv are motion sensor anyway and it’s never been pinged/no one has disabled the alarm at odd times.

Fox could get in I guess, although it’s never pinged the alarms/cctv.

I have seen that rats nests can smell like weed, but there’s nothing in the area they could nest in and we didn’t find anything when we tore the stores apart.

It’s driving me nuts.

The building is quite old so maybe some sort of hemp insulation, but again, the smell is no where near and walls or ceilings

My boss is currently rummaging in the loft to make sure we haven’t got a grow up there we don’t know about 😂

I had a floor mat - plastic thing designed to protect floor from the wheels of an office chair and that absolutely stunk of it. I told my dp I'd bought one and he said he had one years ago and had to chuck it out because it stank like weed. I didn't believe him... sniffed mine when it arrived and sure enough, rank

Is there a light switch/fitting in the area that smells? It could be dodgy electrics made of old plastic, they can make weird smells.

I think it has a yeast/beer smell.

Skunk spray, but not in the UK because we don't have skunks.

Could it have come in one someone's belongings that have been left there?
