Weird question of the day - what smells like weed?

Other than the obvious?

At work, we have this really, really strong smell of weed. We’re pretty confident it’s not weed

You can only smell it in one place - at the bottom of the stairs from the offices into the workshop. There’s our stores to one side and then just the open work shop.

We’ve torn the stores apart - nothing in there, but you can barely smell it in there anyway.

No exterior walls, just metal stairs and a concrete floor. The wall for the stores is just a stud wall with plasterboard (but it’s only been plaster-boarded on one side of the stud wall). No ventilation pipes around that area and once you’re a few metres away from the stairs you can’t smell it.

It’s driving us all nuts as we cannot find where it’s coming from - where it’s at it’s strongest, there’s just nothing there.

The offices are on a mezzanine floor, above the stores area and you can’t smell it upstairs.

When you walk in first thing in the morning it absolutely stinks and everyone can smell it

Our dining room smells of burnt toast the day after we burn it in the adjoining kitchen. Never on the actual day though. We worked out the air was rising up through the pantry and getting trapped in the ceiling before finally making its way down somehow. Are you always the first on the premises? Maybe the last person out has a cheeky smoke and it lingers

Some eyelash glue! As I found out after much crying (from pain) as the paramedics got me in to the ambulance! I was convinced I could smell it and I think they just put it down to a lot of morphine...I eventually realised it was my eyelash glue! It was wet from all the crying and smelt just like weed! Very odd!

So do you have lots of false eyelash wearers hanging around crying??

We have a number of bushes in the front garden that smell just like weed when they flower, ppl mention it. No idea what they're called, not cannabis plants btw! A house down the road has them and I smell it when I walk past

In my experience, neoprene eg wetsuits, and goose shit (traumatic experience with a load of washing out on the line and a flock of migrating geese overhead).

Oh, and alcohol free lager, when just opened.

Damp / lack of ventilation.
Stick a dehumidifier there for a couple of weeks.

Ultimately, the clue is in the "-ene" bit. Cannabis contains a family of compounds called "terpenes" which are basically the building blocks of smell for many plants. Not dissimilar to the aromatic classes of compounds that all derive from the benzene ring.

If you play around with breeding (and believe me, a lot of cannabis growers do) then you can end up with the flavours and smells some of the more colourful strains have. Pineapple, strawberry, blueberry ...

We had this issue at work once, turns out it was an open pack of teabags in someone's locker which had been there for a while. I would have put money on someone having weed, smelled exactly the same.

It’s like a ghost smell or something. There’s absolutely nothing in that area.

We don’t employ any giraffes and don’t use any neoprene or anything like that and we don’t use any smelly chemicals.

Either the business owner or I lock up and the business owner or our workshop manager open up in the morning. It always smells the same. I’ve even popped back if I’ve forgotten my glasses or something in the evening and it smells, it smells the same if I’ve been in over a weekend and it smelled when we were shut down over Christmas.

No plants or bushes outside - but it’s nowhere near an exterior wall anyway. I did read about some plants that smell like weed but there’s nothing anywhere near our building that look like it

There was nothing in the loft so my boss is going to look on the roof and see if anything has seeded itself up there. We do get seagulls nesting up there, maybe something has died?

We have had rats in the past so could be something has died somewhere, but can’t see where

It’s not in the stud wall of the stores - it’s only plaster boarded on one side and the smell isn’t very strong in the stores anyway. All that’s in that area is a metal open staircase.

Unless it’s in the ceiling of the mezzanine floor.

Just a shit load of dust and I’ve made a huge mess.

I’ve wasted an entire day looking and I’ve sniffed so much I’m not entirely sure I can smell it any more 😂.

I give up. Fuck knows what it is or where it is.

The smell is the pink scribble.

Once you’re away from the area at the bottom of the stairs, you can’t smell it. Absolutely nothing above or around that area.
