I mean most people know about things like peanut allergies but what else do you know is an allergen?

Someone I know (on here btw so hi if she sees this) her ds is allergic to tomatoes

I’ve never heard of a tomato allergy before so that was interesting

I'm allergic to canasten cream (not the capsules) and I'm told I have to tell medics I'm allergic to two strong painkillers even though it's not technically an allergic reaction - I now spout off that entire sentence to stop them explaining at me.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/03/2021 10:18

Interesting.. even anti histamines don’t help dd much.

rainbowscalling · 02/03/2021 10:20

I am quite allergic to gnat bites. More so when I was a child and have been hospitalised more than once.

Not so much mosquitos though. Still react to them but no where near on the same scale.

My ds has a mild but amusing allergy to mint. If he brushes his teeth, he sneezes, eats a mint, chews a mint flavoured chewing gum, he sneezes. Just one or two sneezes then he's fine. No rash or swelling.

RhubarbAndRoses · 02/03/2021 10:20

I’m allergic to pineapple

Yellow85 · 02/03/2021 10:20

@PattyPan

I’m allergic to mosquito bites - I didn’t know it was an actual allergy until last year because I’ve never heard of anyone else with it. It’s not an anaphylactic allergy but I’ll get a huge angry swollen area (eg if I get bitten on the foot, my whole foot will swell).
@PattyPan my DM has this too! Ended up in hospital most holidays. She tries to avoid mosquito countries but finds taking garlic tablets for a month before travel helps stop bites!
Hippopotas · 02/03/2021 10:21

I’m allergic to raspberries, cranberries and blackberries Blush

Mrsjayy · 02/03/2021 10:22

I am allergic to gnat and midge bites too.

Yellow85 · 02/03/2021 10:22

I have an MSG allergy and I’m weirdly intolerant to adrenaline. Can’t have local anaesthetic and have to have oxygen and sometimes sedative after a general.

BillywigSting · 02/03/2021 10:23

I've heard of tomato allergy.

I'm essentially allergic to the sun (well, a substance my skin produces in reaction to uv light). It's called pmle and is intensely itchy but not serious.

I would never have believed such a ridiculous condition existed if I didn't have it myself

Hippopotas · 02/03/2021 10:23

Just to add I don’t get anaphylaxis I get blisters on my lips and my tongue swells if I eat them.

Due to the medication I’m on I get a painful red rash in the sun but as soon as I go inside it fades

MuggleStudiesResearchProject · 02/03/2021 10:23

I'm allergic to Swiss chard Grin I get a very flushed face and itchy skin. Spinach and other similar veg are fine though.

Sennedd · 02/03/2021 10:23

I know people who are allergic to strawberries, onions and celery.

Caspianberg · 02/03/2021 10:25

My Ds has a peanut allergy.
Because peanuts are not nuts but the legume family, it’s very common for peanut allergy sufferers to also be allergic to things like lentils and peas

FatCatThinCat · 02/03/2021 10:29

I'm allergic to cold air and airborne spices, amongst other things. If I go out when it's cold I have to cover my mouth and nose otherwise I can't stop coughing. I also struggle with restaurants where there;s a lot of spicey food all together eg Indian buffet. I can eat the food, which I love, but I can't inhale the steam from it.

ShowOfHands · 02/03/2021 10:30

My allergy is something to do with heat but seems to be something to do with the difference between my skin temp and the air temp. And anti-histamines don't work to help it. Cooling the skin is the only thing which works so I use ice packs.

HeidiHoNeighbour · 02/03/2021 10:32

I’m allergic to lavender.
When I was a kid I would rub my hands in it and they’d get huge. I’d then run around like the preacher from the kenny Everett show (I’m that old!).
It’s now much more scary, if I’m lucky I’ll get away with a migraine for a few days otherwise I struggle to breathe.

I’m also allergic to fabric plasters.

@IWantMyHoney this is really common and not an allergy. It's just a photic sneeze reflex. Some people have the same response to other external stimulus. I always sneeze if I brush my teeth or eat mints, it's just the strong flavour stimulating the nerves. My Mum sneezes when the sun comes out.
FishyFriday · 02/03/2021 10:35

I’m allergic to tramadol. It was fun discovering that.

And tequila. I’m allergic to that. It was also fun discovering that. Aloe Vera can bring me out in a rash. I would even consider trying to ingest it.

TheSockMonster · 02/03/2021 10:36

The antihistamine cetirizine, somewhat ironically, brings me out in dramatic hives.

DS has oral allergy syndrome and looks like he has had lip fillers if he accidentally eats the wrong fruit.

A friend’s DS has a bad allergy to raw egg. He gets rashes and a swollen face if he accidentally comes into contact with raw eggs, for example by touching uncooked cake batter. However he can eat things containing cooked eggs. He’s also very allergic to dogs and horses.

PattyPan · 02/03/2021 10:36

@Yellow85 my best friend is incognito spray from holland & Barrett, it seems to put off even the ones that don’t mind deet. I just wear it every day in the summer now! I’ve never been hospitalised for it but had to have a sick day last year to sit in a soothing bath as it turns out that they can bite through leggings! Shock

thosetalesofunexpected · 02/03/2021 10:41

@Jackparlabane

I am allergic to Arseholes
One encounter with one is one far too many.

seepingweeping · 02/03/2021 10:43

I'm allergic to preservatives in medications like saline and insulin.

I'm also allergic to anti inflammatorys. It wasn't fun finding that one out.

thosetalesofunexpected · 02/03/2021 10:45

@Soubriquet
