I cant cope with the crying anymore

She is 5 months. I've done nothing but worry and fret and rock and shush and I've nothing left.

Put her down, go to another room and breathe. She won't die from crying and it's ok to have had enough and need a break.

Bilgepumper · 27/02/2021 22:53

We faffed about endlessly with our first born. Then we had another 20 months later. Having two so close together meant no time for rocking and shushing with the baby and she learned to settle herself.

Looking back, I believe we made our first into a crying baby, purely through fussing too much.

Endofthelinefinally · 27/02/2021 22:53

How long has this gone on? Any clues as to whether it is hunger, pain? Any temperature or runny poo or anything? It is so hard when you don't know whats wrong.

OhToBeASeahorse · 27/02/2021 23:00

@Bilgepumper she is our second.

She has broken wind a couple of times. Maybe that's it. She is frantic.

Checked all fingers and toes in case she's got a hair wrapped round anywhere?
Tummy massage?

NeepNeepNeep · 27/02/2021 23:33

Maybe she is overtired and over stimulated now. Have you tried putting her in her cot, put on some loud white noise and leave room for a minute or so to see if she will settle?

OhToBeASeahorse · 27/02/2021 23:37

She is back down. She wont sleep in her cot, will only sleep with me on my arm

In order, I would

check fingers & toes carefully

Put her in her cot & leave her for a few minutes

Lie her on the floor in front of you and cycle her legs. It helps with both trapped wind & usually the rhythm stops the crying even if there's no wind.

Has she fed ok today?
Tooth coming through?
How's her temperature?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/02/2021 23:40

Well, it's good she's back down. Long may it last!

Mylittlesandwich · 27/02/2021 23:40

Does she like to nap in the car/pram. Take her out for a bit if she does?

Nettleskeins · 27/02/2021 23:42

Ear infection? Worse when lying down?
Constipation?
UTI?
All these things might mean baby is in pain

OhToBeASeahorse · 27/02/2021 23:42

Temp fine, digits free of hairs. She can be unsettled. I've made myself nearly ill trying to work out why

OP posts:
imalmostthere · 27/02/2021 23:43

Is she often this way or one off?
Teething? Needs a burp? Constipation? Reflux?

imalmostthere · 27/02/2021 23:44

How long has she been crying, and is it unusual for her?

Endofthelinefinally · 27/02/2021 23:44

Calpol?
Gripe water?

NeepNeepNeep · 27/02/2021 23:45

I had one that would only sleep on me too and if I was lucky could transfer to cot but ended up co-sleeping. White noise really helped if he was worked up into a state - even if I was holding him - just seemed to interrupt the cycle.

Bananacocks · 27/02/2021 23:46

You are doing an amazing job. This will pass. If you think she may be in pain you could try some calpol.

NeepNeepNeep · 27/02/2021 23:46

Honestly didn't always find a reason. You're not alone. Hope it gets better for you.

NeepNeepNeep · 27/02/2021 23:48

I second the Calpol too. You've tried everything, it won't hurt.

imalmostthere · 27/02/2021 23:50

Calpol, ambesol on gums. Only thing that worked when mine were teething

Endofthelinefinally · 27/02/2021 23:52

It is so upsetting. I think they frighten themselves with all the noise. If you haven't got white noise, have you got any soothing/ classical music?

OhToBeASeahorse · 28/02/2021 06:18

White noise is on permanently . She has woken frequently in the night, windy and upset every time.

OP posts:
Endofthelinefinally · 28/02/2021 06:23

How are you feeding her?
Has anything changed that could possibly have upset her tummy?
Constipation?

Daffodilsarehere · 28/02/2021 06:27

Probably not popular advice, but does she have a dummy?

Helps to regulate breathing and they are a great soother. Especially at five months.

Really aren't as bad as people think.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 28/02/2021 06:56

We had episodes of this with our lo a sling (simple tie one) saved my sanity really helped him with wind pain and was only thing that would settle him, think was to do with position. Also helped me stay relaxed he was safe and close and I had hands free to read my book or mn as distraction while I walked up and down! He’s 3 now still gets trapped wind v occasionally and this still works now! Sending sympathy it’s hard - it will pass Flowers
