Is anyone else's house showing a lot of wear and tear

I guess it's because everything happens indoors now. We have very active teenagers who would normally be at school and then at football training or football matches, and they are ricocheting around the house instead. DH would normally be away at least a couple of nights a fortnight or working at the office but he's always here too. I would roughly reckon that we've had around 5 normal years of wear and tear in just one year of mostly lockdown. Everything is looking a bit tired, stained or damaged.

Yes, yes and yes.

Even the dishwasher gave up after all the abuse it's been taking.

Coffeeandcocopops · 27/02/2021 22:41

Definitely. The whole house looks like it needs painting and my poor sofa that I only bought two years ago has had excessive Netflix usage.

FGSWhatNow · 27/02/2021 22:44

And the dust! So much dust! A day after cleaning the house, it looks like no-one's touch it for a year. I swear it's because we're all cooped up at home 24/7.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 27/02/2021 22:46

YESx a million

Notabove25 · 27/02/2021 22:50

I doesn't help that the sun's come out. I find it best to be out when the sun's shining Grin

Wandamakestoast · 27/02/2021 22:50

Yes - all the dust is grim! It’s constant.

MichelleScarn · 27/02/2021 22:52

The dust, the walls, generally everything! We were just talking about this today- the recent wear and tear is awful!!

Purpleprickles · 27/02/2021 22:53

Yes same here. And the cleaning tidying is relentless.

PopUpName · 27/02/2021 22:54

God, the sofa. The poor sofa...

Also the rug under the sofa.

It's a tragedy. And for once it's not the dog's fault.

I think you're right about the sunshine. I was happily ignoring most of it until we had a few sunny days and then there was no avoiding it. I actually have little chunks knocked out of the plaster in some places, how on earth?

There's going to be a waiting list for painters and decorators once they're allowed back into homes, isn't there?

'It doesn't help that the sun's come out. I find it best to be out when the sun's shining'

This exactly 🤣 I saw the dust & left the house... I'll deal with it tmrw (maybe)

Yes, also I used to do a lot of housework on my day off but I can't do much now because the teen DCs are on live lessons, so no hoovering, no doing anything upstairs (one uses our bedroom to study in). Every evening there's still someone on bloody zoom so I still can't vacuum.

Rainallnight · 27/02/2021 22:59

OP, I’m so glad you said this, I’ve been really feeling the same about my house, including the chunks of plaster! Shock We are vaguely thinking of selling and there will be a LOT to do to make the place presentable.

TokyoSushi · 27/02/2021 23:01

Yes definitely! I can't wait until everybody is back where they need to be so that I can have a massive clean and assess the damage! Grin

Notabove25 · 27/02/2021 23:02

FWIW painters and decorators have never not been allowed in homes. They're allowed to work.

Crabwoman · 27/02/2021 23:03

Yep. I honestly can't wait for DC's and DH (teacher) to go back on the 8th. It's minging.

I WFH but I'm going to book a few days off work to do a deep clean. Ridiculous that I'm excited about this and the fact I will have the ^house to myself

tobee · 27/02/2021 23:03

It's good for me coz everyone's come down to my level. My house has looked like this for some year. 😬

tobee · 27/02/2021 23:04

*years

TisConfusion · 27/02/2021 23:05

Yes! I feel overwhelmed by how much needs to be sorted, even when it's little things - it all adds up.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/02/2021 23:05

Oh God yes. Everything looks tired and worn down. Including me.

womanity · 27/02/2021 23:06

At least no one’s allowed in to see it.

Ours is disgusting. I’ve been hoovering the easy bits but not doing much else - bit pointless with everyone home.

TheChosenTwo · 27/02/2021 23:07

I think you can have painters and decorators in? We did! My cleaner is also coming every week, she was told she was allowed to work.
Our house is looking like it could do with a lick of paint and the kitchen could do with not being covered in exercise books but I only have 1 dc home learning now, the others are at school.
It could look worse. It will be rectified fairly soon fingers crossed.

Fairydustrust · 27/02/2021 23:09

I was so proud of painting the house in the first lockdown. It looked so clean and bright. It now looks as though I never did it! Will need to get the paints out again and do some serious patching, but beginning to think 'what's the point' I feel like I live in a train station. In fact, charging for use of the toilet is a good idea.....Grin

AlwaysLatte · 27/02/2021 23:12

Generally it's been ok except funnily enough just this evening one of my children managed to break an antique balloon back chair - and not on a join. Never mind, accidents happen - but 😭

TheVanguardSix · 27/02/2021 23:13

God yes. I just feel like knocking the whole house down and rebuilding it. The state of it. It needs so much love, I don't even know where to begin. I'm just frantically tapping my feet, snapping my fingers, breaking out in hives and a stone-cold sweat as I count down to March 8th so I can boot the kids out the door to school and fecking blitz the bedrooms. There will be things up there, living under the beds... things... creatures with teeth, hair, vocal fry, and bacteria. I am prepared to encounter them!

DD dropped a prawn down the radiator the other night, ffs. I'm thinking, "Just another smell to add to the myriad of smells suffocating us in this dustbowl!"
