All Right Now by Free or Layla by Derek and The Dominoes ?

Which song would you rather hear ? Both are rock classics from the same era, perhaps they could be described as musical cliches. But I'd much rather listen to All Right Now. For a 1970 song, it was ahead of its time and has stood the test of time. Paul Rodgers' vocals are excellent and there is a great guitar solo that builds from nowhere.
Layla, whilst unquestionably a good song, just doesn't do it for me. Ironically, it will likely be Eric Clapton's most high-profile legacy.

I love the opening riff in Layla but just don't love the rest of the song as much as that riff. All Right Now still reminds me of chewing gum.

Layla. Just stunning.the guitar sounds, performance.

Free by far.

I wouldn't say All Right Now is Free's finest hour. Admittedly, I don't know many of their songs but I prefer Wishing Well to ARN.

Layla.

OldRailer · 27/02/2021 22:01

All Right Now.

longtompot · 27/02/2021 22:02

Layla, hands down

TheLaughingGenome · 27/02/2021 22:03

Both.

MajesticWhine · 27/02/2021 22:05

All right now is a better song.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 27/02/2021 22:08

ARN but agree not their finest hour. Prefer “Little Bit of Love”

PainterInPeril · 27/02/2021 22:10

Layla. Not fussed about the vocals or lyrics but the music is fab!

Onlinedilema · 27/02/2021 22:11

All right now just goes on and on. Over done by every cover band in the land. Layla is ok but nothing special.

WildRosie · 27/02/2021 22:15

I thought this might be a divisive one. Bound to be when there's only two outcomes, fence-sitters notwithstanding.

Can’t really say either would be my thing but if I had to choose it would be Layla .

OldRailer · 27/02/2021 22:16

But as a contrarian I prefer Since You've Been Gone by Rainbow.

RickiTarr · 27/02/2021 22:16

Layla. Amazing song.

TheDogsMother · 27/02/2021 22:18

Layla, no competition. Also loved the slow version the EC did a few years later.

His Unplugged? I’d forgotten that.
Pan2 · 27/02/2021 22:20

Layla.

but also agree Wishing Well beats ARN.

Headsshoulderskneesandtoes00 · 27/02/2021 22:21

My daughter was named Layla with that song in mind. I grew up loving both of them though (thanks Dad)

TheyWalkAroundInWellies · 27/02/2021 22:23

All right now just goes on and on.

And Layla doesn't?! It's about eight years minutes long, most of which is Clapton noodling around.

ratspeaker · 27/02/2021 22:26

I love Wishing Well

how about early Clapton when he was in Cream?
I feel free
Sunshine of your love

Sgtmajormummy · 27/02/2021 22:31

She said “ Love? Lord above!
Now you're tryin' to trick me in love!”

Paints a picture. One of my favourite song lines.

Headsshoulderskneesandtoes00 · 27/02/2021 22:34

Misheard lyrics for me on All Right Now....for years I thought 'parking ' as in 'let's move before they raise the parking rate' was a sweary word beginning with F and ending in G.

WildRosie · 27/02/2021 22:36

Since You've Been Gone is good. Russ Ballard wrote it, along with I Surrender, which is better.

Lay Down Sally is rather twee but I still prefer it to Layla.
