Washing machines, am I just brutal?

I need a new one. Dh is baffled that our washing machines don’t last. In 15 years I’ve had four.
I think that’s pretty average, my sisters have only had one each in the same time.

  1. Hotpoint. Basic.
  2. LG awful. I won’t have anything LG ever again
  3. Miele washer dryer. Nice until it was moved into the garage when we moved here. It didn’t like the garage. Paid 3 times for one of their engineers who all said it was not a good place for Miele. When it died again, we just couldn’t be arsed to pay again.
  4. Hotpoint integrated which was in our new build. Been fine but died today.
So am I an appliance killer or is this normal? I do wash stuff everyday so it is used a lot. Dh finds it baffling.

Ah, thought I’d put this in housekeeping Blush

I'm on my second in our new build (6 years). One other family has had to replace and a couple have had to repair. I use mine by far the most and the others who replaced are the only other family with DC. Are you overloading it?

BrutusMcDogface · 26/02/2021 16:47

My mieles have lasted 15 years and are still going strong, but they aren’t in the garage!

We’ve been through three dishwashers in that time, though. Some of the cheaper ones are only built to last 3 years, according to the repair guy.

BrutusMcDogface · 26/02/2021 16:48

I mean 12 years! 🤦🏻‍♀️

dementedpixie · 26/02/2021 16:48

My Samsung ecobubble is at least 5 or 6 years old. The one before lasted 7 or 8 years

icelollycraving · 26/02/2021 16:51

No overloading. If anything I’m ridiculous about how many different washes I do from a 30 to a 90 temp. Maybe the hot temps fuck them.

I got mine 11 years ago and it's needed some minor repairs but is OK still and I'll do on average 2 loads a day..

CommunistLegoBloc · 26/02/2021 16:52

Ours is six years old and fine. Hotpoint. Used once a day on average.

My mother's Miele washing machine lasted about thirty years! I think she only replaced it because she wanted some specific new function.

icelollycraving · 26/02/2021 16:52

The garage definitely killed the Miele, sensitive soul didn’t like the temperature etc.

Maybe dh is right and I kill them.

I think they used to make them better. My Nanna has had hers in for about 25 years. I have had about 25 machines Grin

Seriously though, in about 20 years I have probably had 5, possibly even 6.

I feel better now Grin

My washing machines last about eight years. I do 3-4 washes a week, for two people, in a hard water area. So about 200 wages a year.

Mine have been Hotpoint or Zanussi. They lasted about the same.

I've never heard of a washing machine lasting 15 years. I think your DH is stretching reality a bit. Grin

Moresugar · 26/02/2021 16:56

Mines not a washer dryer combo though

IhaveNotBroughtMySpecsWithMe · 26/02/2021 16:56

I've had 5 in 30 years

LagneyandCasey · 26/02/2021 16:58

I once read (in a manual I think) that using the highest spin wears the machine out quicker. So on a warm breezy day when the washing dries easily use a lower spin. My washing machine has 1400, 1000, 800 and 400 (rpm?) and I generally only use the 800. I've never used the 1400. It's about 9 years old now and works perfectly despite 2/3 loads daily.

lastqueenofscotland · 26/02/2021 17:02

My DMs house is kitted out with MEILE everything and they just all be coming up to 13 years old and work perfectly still. 4 in 15 years seems like a lot for decent brands

BarbaraofSeville · 26/02/2021 17:05

Ours have lasted 11 and 14 years. Neither were completely dead in that time, we left the first one in our old house because I thought moving it might finish it off.

Second one was on the way out when it was replaced (very noisy and moved a lot on the spin cycle). Both mid range - something I don't remember and a Zanussi.

Under 4 years a time is ridiculous. Do you have hard water? That's bad for them according to the Calgon advert.

Suchalicklepumpkin · 26/02/2021 17:05

I replaced my 19 year old Hotpoint recently, sad day! Went from 2 to 5 of us. The guy installing the new one said never use the top spin as it wrecks them.

Cakeonthefloor · 26/02/2021 17:05

Mine is at least 12 years old. Used daily. I add sodium bicarbonate to every wash as recommended by a plumber. Stops build up of limescale in hard water, apparently.

Willowwarble · 26/02/2021 17:06

I am a washing machine killer as well. Mine last 3-4 years on average and there is only me FFS . Don't know what I do, 30 degree washes, 2-3 washes a week, do live in a hard water area though. I am seriously considering renting one next time.

SplendidSuns1000 · 26/02/2021 17:26

Mine was 14 when it died last month. Got a new one that died in a week and our latest one doesn't match the dryer so I'm secretly hoping it dies too Grin

icelollycraving · 26/02/2021 17:26

Oh, maybe it’s the spins. I always use the top spins.

OP posts:
Calibrachoa · 26/02/2021 17:32

My bosch ones lasted about 6-8 years. I have a john lewis one now which is good but the top spin makes a clattering noise sometimes so I feel like it'll wear it out. Might try and avoid it

dalmatianmad · 26/02/2021 18:11

I've had my Bosch for 15 years. Dont know whether I'm just lucky? I do a "service wash" once a month where I chuck some bleach in the empty drum and stick it on a 60 wash. Not sure of that's made a difference?
