Washing machines, am I just brutal?

I need a new one. Dh is baffled that our washing machines don’t last. In 15 years I’ve had four.
I think that’s pretty average, my sisters have only had one each in the same time.

  1. Hotpoint. Basic.
  2. LG awful. I won’t have anything LG ever again
  3. Miele washer dryer. Nice until it was moved into the garage when we moved here. It didn’t like the garage. Paid 3 times for one of their engineers who all said it was not a good place for Miele. When it died again, we just couldn’t be arsed to pay again.
  4. Hotpoint integrated which was in our new build. Been fine but died today.
So am I an appliance killer or is this normal? I do wash stuff everyday so it is used a lot. Dh finds it baffling.

I do service wash too. I think I have to accept I’m a killer.

I love my Samsung, had it 5 years with no issues, my parents have an 8 year old Samsung machine (same model, also no issues).

Nellythemouse · 26/02/2021 18:18

Hard water area, almost daily use. In 14 years I’ve had a hotpoint washer dryer which was truly awful and repeatedly broke until I replaced it after less than 3 years with separate appliances, a Bosch washer that died after 6 years and now have a Samsung that’s so far been fairly reliable.

I’d rather buy basic models at cheapest price and use top spin etc. I’m not interested in having wetter washing just to prolong the life of an appliance that’s supposed to make my life easier and my tumble dryer would probably protest!

Angel2702 · 26/02/2021 18:22

I’m on the 3rd in 16 years. I was annoyed the second one only lasted 5 years.

RandomMess · 26/02/2021 18:22

How big is your family?

Our nice Samsung died just shy of 6 years old but we are a family of 5/6 older teens/adults that do lots of sport plus pets.

I was still disappointed though.

doubleleopardy · 26/02/2021 18:31

We're on our third washing machine in 20 years and have had it 5/6 years. The tumble dryer we bought at the same time has had to be replaced.
Last one was LG I think.

Thecrisplover · 26/02/2021 18:35

I've had a few bosch ones that have lasted 8 years each. The most recent one lasted the first 8 years of dd's life where it had been on 3 times a day on lots of occasions. I've just bought a new bosch after that one developed a leak. I'm shocked it lasted as long as it did!

RandomMess · 26/02/2021 18:38

Our tumble dryer is at least 16 years though!

Mummaofboys93 · 26/02/2021 18:38

Still machine no.1 but it definitely needs replacing. It's a Bosch one & had it 9 years this year. I live in a hard water area & do 1/2 washes a day, clothes keep coming out smelling damp no how much detergent I use or brand, sometimes things are still completely soaked & I have cleaned it monthly since having it. I have never rated it though tbh.

icelollycraving · 26/02/2021 18:41

There are only 3 of us. Saying that, my Ds has continence issues and in normal life plays sport almost every day so lots of washing from him alone.

My last one was the cheapest one we could find and it was still going strong 13 years later - we left it when we moved house. I wanted to being it with us as it had never been an ounce of trouble but new house had one already. I hope it's behaving for it's new owner.

4 in 15 years seems crazy! You're poor mistreated washing machines. Calling Machine-line on you.

MargaretThursday · 26/02/2021 18:44

We're on 3rd in 20 years.
But one is only because we moved house. As far as I know it's still working well for the old owners.

minipie · 26/02/2021 18:45

I have an LG direct drive 11kg (love it) which I’ve had since 2010. Still going strong. It did have to have something replaced but luckily was within warranty.

4 in 15 years... wow

Lottiethelemming · 26/02/2021 18:45

I'm just coming here to say I have Bush washing machine bought for £119 from Argos 9 years ago. It's moved around the country with and has been stored in sheds and garages for periods of time here and there. I'm desperate for a fancy Miele or Samsung machine but WILL THE FUCKER DIE? No.

YouPrettyThings · 26/02/2021 18:45

Our LG is still going after 9 years - it gets extremely heavy use and is indoors. It has got a bit rumbly of late so might need to replace sometime soon.

LubaLuca · 26/02/2021 18:46

I've had my Hotpoint for 10+ years now. It's certainly earned its keep, it's used most days. I'll be very upset when it gives up the ghost.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 26/02/2021 18:48

My Samsung eco bubble only lasted for 4 years

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/02/2021 18:51

I have had at least 5 in 20 years , not built to last really , I did rent for over 10 years as went through 2 in 5 years bought one
Rental were always bosch and probably had 2 - 3 in 10 years
Mine is used a lot though

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/02/2021 18:52

Tbf bosch ones replaced and if needed repair rental company would often upgrade to new one

ImnotCarolineHirons · 26/02/2021 18:53

Current Bosch washer has done 10 nearly 11 years and the previous one had done minimum 8 as I got it second hand at the time. Left it when we moved and it did at least another year for the next tenant who I knew.

Current one has been used daily for those 10 years as DC growing. We are soft water area though which might help? and I always do a maintenance wash every month.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 26/02/2021 18:53

I'm lucky if they last 4 years. Very soft water area. But 5 of us and usually 2 loads a day. Current one is a 9kg Hisense. Hate it. It needed repairs at a year old - motor & pump, and I think the motor is on it's way out again a year later. Also had problems with it leaking. Currently looking for my next one so watching with interest!

Maryann1975 · 26/02/2021 19:01

I’ve been a washing machine owner for just under 17 years and on machine number 4. There are now 5 of us, so it does get a lot of use. The first 3 were Hotpoint, but this machine is the cheapest one that curry’s sold. I figured if the expensive ones were breaking down so quickly, I might as well give the cheap one a try (although it is very noisy, so I might not get another cheap one).

The others might have been fixable, but it never seems worth trying to pay To get them fixed when call out fees are so much compared to a new machine (we did do this with the first one and it just wasn’t worth it).

Chunkymenrock · 26/02/2021 19:09

I never, ever wash anything at 90. That's really unnecessary. It's probably just bad luck OP, if you're definitely not overloading it.

CannotOperateOnThisFailure · 26/02/2021 19:17

I bought new washing machines (one was a washer dryer) in 2004, 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2020. Bearings went at least twice, one got killed by reusable baby wipes getting caught in the element, the Samsung hole in the door one just leaked everywhere. We did go through paying the same in mending as buying a new one only for it to pack up weeks later stage. But there's 6 of us, we did cloth nappies and wipes, there's sports kits, we've got an unusual drainage thing which blocks and backs up and the thing has to work hard - I've done 3 loads today and 4 yesterday in a 10kg machine. We've gone very posh - the singing hole in the door Eco bubble; and cheap as chips Zanussi. We do service washed too. Three years max of being thrashed and that's it.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 26/02/2021 20:13

The first one I bought was a Zanussi, it lasted sixteen years, was used two/three times a day, every single day and I cried when it died. I've had four others since then, lasting approximately four/five years each.

I've a cheap Bosch now, and it's lasted four years so far. It's the best I've had since the Zanussi.

If you've not had your machine long, you know it has to be fit for purpose for a certain length of time? Contact Trading Standards to find out if you can get it sorted from the supplier.
