Washing machines, am I just brutal?

I need a new one. Dh is baffled that our washing machines don’t last. In 15 years I’ve had four.
I think that’s pretty average, my sisters have only had one each in the same time.

  1. Hotpoint. Basic.
  2. LG awful. I won’t have anything LG ever again
  3. Miele washer dryer. Nice until it was moved into the garage when we moved here. It didn’t like the garage. Paid 3 times for one of their engineers who all said it was not a good place for Miele. When it died again, we just couldn’t be arsed to pay again.
  4. Hotpoint integrated which was in our new build. Been fine but died today.
So am I an appliance killer or is this normal? I do wash stuff everyday so it is used a lot. Dh finds it baffling.

Ours last about 3 years. I do at least a load a day and have allergies so need to use higher temps to kill the dustmite. Also have to spin a lot as unless it's a bright sunny day clothes will smell if not spun on high speed (and I buy machines with ability to do a fast spin). Seems really unsatisfactory but we priced up getting an expensive machine and unless is lasted like 1000 years it looked like it was going to be more expensive overall. We have hard water too.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/02/2021 21:29

@Cookerhood

Hotpoint have the worst reputation according to Which, they just don't last. We had washer driers and they only lasted a couple of years. Then our Bosch lasted 12 years. Now on a Miele which is 5 years old. Our dishwasher lasted 14.5 years (Bosch again).
Our Hotpoint dishwasher lasted 13 years. Our Hotpoint fridge freezer is 22 years and counting.

I'm conflicted between replacement because some of the freezer drawers have cracked and id like a bigger fridge section Vs morbid curiosity about how long it will last if left to it's own devices. It was made in England FFS. I don't think anyone has made a mid price fridge freezer in England this century.

@icelollycraving

Hard water here. I can’t help that dh Wink
You could get a water softener and it might be a worthwhile investment.
icelollycraving · 26/02/2021 21:31

I need to sort out my replacement. Needs to be integrated. I’m thinking a washer dryer. I have a tumble dryer in the garage but I have to go out there with wet laundry.
I know washer dryers are not supposed to last as long but considering my history, a washer isn’t that long. Actually this one was probably the cheapest and lasted the longest.

Have a read of the Ukwhitegoods forum for the low down on why modern washing machines are rubbish. Best bet is to find a really old Bosch or Miele on eBay I think. Will probably have more life left in it.

Lucked · 26/02/2021 21:42

Me too!

I think I am on my second washing machine and third tumble dryer in three years. To be fair to me my last tumble dryer was dangerous and we are lucky it didn’t start a fire. Both current ones are on their way out - the tumble dryer is only coping with half loads!

With my first ones I went through various repairs but it only delayed the inevitable by a little.

Lucked · 26/02/2021 21:42

Edit in 10years - not three that would be crazy

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2021 21:45

My Zanussi is 12 years old and still going strong.

DrDreReturns · 26/02/2021 21:49

Our previous machine lasted 14 years. It was a Hotpoint. We did about 5 washes a week. We've now got a Bosche.

shoofly · 26/02/2021 21:56

You've actually made me feel better. 20 years... Candy, Hotpoint, LG, AEG and now on a bloody Beko... 1400 spin and stuff still comes out wet.
On 3rd tumble dryer in same time frame.

BashfulClam · 26/02/2021 23:14

First candy lasted over 10 years, 2nd candy is 8 years old and making a bit more noise than it used to....

Overthegardenfence · 27/02/2021 01:45

I’ve had a hotpoint then an Indesit they both lasted between two and three years so last time I bought a bosch hoping it would last longer the 2 year warranty ran out in December and the bearings are going on it so it’s on it’s on it last legs. So I’m a washing machine killer too ffs there’s only me I only use it a couple of times a week, I do spin on 1400 though

Bargebill19 · 27/02/2021 01:55

On my third one in 50 years. Although one didn’t die on me, we left it as part of a house sale. Fourth if you count a twin tub as a washing machine.

HelebethH · 27/02/2021 02:22

40 years married and still on my 2nd machine. Both Hoover. Not fancy models as I think there is more to go wrong. Have replaced a door seal

CoffeeBeansGalore · 27/02/2021 11:42

@icelollycraving I had a washer dryer years ago (first house, paid for them to leave it). It was dreadful, never again. It would take 2 hours to dry 4 towels. If you wanted it to wash & dry the same load, you could only put a minmum wash in or the dryer couldn't cope with it. Never again.

Venice1234 · 05/08/2021 18:45

Hi using my Hoover Axi washer today the door fell off its 18 months old .
I emailed head office , just got an email back saying it’s worked perfectly for 18 months so we will not mend it you can have an engineer for half price . What should I do next it’s only used once a week

Mindymomo · 05/08/2021 19:01

My washer/dryers usually last 4/5 years. I’ve had bosch, hoover and last 3 times hotpoint. The current one went wrong whilst still under guarantee, but has now lasted 6 years, although the dryer doesn’t work, but I’m at home daytime, so can put washing out to dry at the moment. The engineer said to do a hot wash with descale every month, well I try and do it every 3/4 months.

Buttons294749 · 05/08/2021 19:22

I had a top level Bosch that lasted 7 years with me and unknown years with previous flat owners. Heavy usage/excessive spinning. I had to repair it a couple if times and decided to cut my losses laat year but it was still repairable. Have replaced with a medium level Bosch.

I think you are using the lower end brands which are not built to last.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 05/08/2021 19:30

Washing machines, like so many other things, are more disposable these days.

I had a basic Zanussi that lasted from 1986 to 2000. In that time the drum "went" whatever that meant and it cost £30 for someone to come out and fit a new one. That can't happen now, the drum is an integral part of the machine so you have to get a new one Hmm.

Since that Zanussi died in 2000 I'm now on my third or fourth machine. Worst was definitely the Bosch, I hated it. But they averaged 5 years each.

Mrs08 · 05/08/2021 19:33

Married 22 years
On 4th washer and dryer
Do not ever ever buy a beko - Lasted 1 week after the 1 year warranty
Got bosch now and the dryer has needed a couple of new parts but still OK for now

meadowbleu · 05/08/2021 19:33

I bought my washer dryer in 1997 and although it's on borrowed time now, it's serviced a family of four, three house moves, a period in a storage unit and well, straddling two centuries. I've never needed an engineer and I will grieve when it finally dies. It looks pristine, although obviously it has limited functions, but the ones it does have suit my needs. It's a Miele.

In another house I had a washing machine that lasted 20 years including 12 in a rental property. That was made by Bosch.

Whether today's models are as good, I wouldn't know.

Mrs08 · 05/08/2021 19:34

Should say I do approx 2/3 loads per day

aiwblam · 05/08/2021 19:37

Heavy use on an average quality machine - lucky to last 4 years.

steppemum · 05/08/2021 19:40

I always use top spins.
But when installed, make sure it is porperly levelled

I have had 2 machines in the last 12 years. first one was second hand.
then bought new.
It is now 5?6? year old and going fine.

steppemum · 05/08/2021 19:41

Oh and empty the filter drain regularly
