What’s the best place you’ve travelled to?

Like most people I have a little bucket list. I enjoy travelling, seeing new places & cultures, & I hope to do more of it later on in life when the kids are bigger. What’s the best place you’ve been to & why?

I’d love to go back to Pompei one day. I’d love to see some of the Scottish Highlands. Just for the scenery alone.

Definitely the highlands. I am 20 minutes from Loch Lomond and can’t wait to be heading that way again!

Honeyroar · 23/02/2021 13:23

Pompei is amazing, so interesting- as is Rome.

Long haul - Rio, Cape Town and Hong Kong. Phoenix in Arizona, Sydney. San Francisco.

leafygarden42 · 23/02/2021 13:25

Nepal

Iwantacampervan · 23/02/2021 13:26

The best city abroad I've visited (so far) is Chicago closely followed by Paria - would love to revisit both one day.

Kendodd · 23/02/2021 13:27

Everywhere!
I've loved it all. Not particularly well travelled but not poorly travelled either. I think I've been to about 50 countries, there are dozens more I'd like to visit and go back to.
I think if I could live anywhere, I'd live in Geneva or Berlin. For beach and underwater - the Maldives, for mountain scenery - Switzerland, for lovely people - Iran, for city life - New York, for history - Egypt. I could go on and on.

Ori21 · 23/02/2021 13:30

@BashfulClam

Yes I’d love to see Loch Lomond & thereabouts. Even if it was a little short break.

@leafygarden42 - Nepal would be simply amazing.

Iran. Wonderful people, wonderful hospitality, wonderful sights.

zafferana · 23/02/2021 13:31

So many amazing places, I couldn't just choose one! Places I've dreamed of visiting this past year when I've been stuck at home and day-dreaming - Sicily, the Alps, Ibiza, California, the Lake District, Paris, Greek Islands ... I'd go back to them all and many others besides.

AgeLikeWine · 23/02/2021 13:31

I have been fortunate to be able to travel a lot, and South Africa wins hands down. As a holiday destination, it just has absolutely everything.

FossilisedFanny · 23/02/2021 13:32

Tobago was beautiful , I went there 30 years ago so it might have changed , but the beaches were gorgeous . Also Grenada was interesting, it’s the spice island and we saw how nutmeg and cocoa are grown .

Kendodd · 23/02/2021 13:38

zafferana
We had a road trip around California and the South West cancelled last year. Shame. My kids had been really looking forward to it.

Lollypop4 · 23/02/2021 13:38

I'm from Pembrokeshire, Lucky enough to still live here...
Totally biased in saying, this is the best place Ive explored .
Looking forward to visiting places abroad though soon

I managed to get to Beirut in 2006. Always stuck with me absolutely amazing place. So interesting.

Yes I have heard that South Africa is pretty amazing as a holiday destination. Where did you stay? Did you stay in one particular place or did you move around? Is safety an issue in any regard? I’ve heard you have to be careful in some parts.

Iceland.

Bloodyhadenough · 23/02/2021 13:52

Agree with pp on Iceland. It's rustic natural charm and the open space is amazing. I've been quite fortunate to have travelled quite a bit. From New Orleans and its natural charm and relaxed vibe, and definitely the food to Florence with the beautiful architecture and art (and again food).

Keepcountingyourfingers · 23/02/2021 13:52

Washington. St Petersburg. Stockholm.

Merename · 23/02/2021 13:55

India. Hard to describe but utter assault on every sense which is kind of life altering. I suppose all travel is. And the Taj Mahal is one of those top destinations that lived up to every expectation and more, so unbelievably beautiful.

Cattenberg · 23/02/2021 13:57

Yes, Iceland is spectacular.

People seem to love or hate Venice, but I love it.

Bhutan is an extraordinary country. The landscapes and the culture are so distinctive and beautiful.

FindingMeno · 23/02/2021 13:59

I've never been anywhere exotic but I loved Sweden and would jump at the chance to go to anywhere in Scandinavia again.

Ragwort · 23/02/2021 14:01

Yosemite National Park .... wonderful place, I've been there twice .... really hope to be able to visit one more time. We are planning a three-six month tour of USA when we retire (3-4 years time), just hoping it will still happen.

We have been twice. The first time, we went to Cape Town and the Cape wine growing region. We also drove the ‘Garden Route’ and went whale watching in Hermanus. Amazing, all of it.

The second holiday was all about the wildlife. We went to the other side of the country and visited nature reserves and the Kruger Park. We saw absolutely everything except a kill. It was thrilling and unforgettable.

We never felt unsafe, either from people or animals, but as tourists you have to be sensible and careful and stick to the guidelines. If you do that, you will be fine. The inequalities in South African society mean that if a tourist is stupid enough to walk a around the wrong part of town late at night, they are asking for trouble.

Phi Phi islands

1starwars2 · 23/02/2021 14:14

Syria... Fabulous, beautiful and lovely people, but as that's still out, Sri Lanka, so much to see and amazing wildlife.

Gojuchang · 23/02/2021 14:18

Norway, even in autumn and winter!
