Those with blonde highlights

Have you attempted any form of home colouring in lock down? My roots are now awful (full head blonde highlights, naturally light brown). I’m so tempted to try a home colour but I’m worried about the result. I don’t want to end up with a mess my hairdresser won’t can’t fix!

Not touching mine. I have root touch up spray but the hairdresser has pleaded with her clients via Instagram not to try and do highlights at home! Grin

Depending on the shade of your highlights (mine are a warmer blonde rather than platinum), tryL’Oreal professional root touch up in warm blonde.

JudgeRindersMinder · 22/02/2021 16:48

Absolutely not!

Hoppinggreen · 22/02/2021 16:48

No, I have left mine
They are mostly underneath so no really visible Regrowth but my gray hairs on top are bad

I'm not touching mine either

PaperMonster · 22/02/2021 17:45

I’m using a shampoo that temporarily colours the highlights. I’m quite fair anyhow so my roots aren’t hugely noticeable, but my highlights are now pink.

whatsthestory123 · 22/02/2021 17:50

nope no way

but have just messaged mine to book me in after the 12th,iwould leave alone if i was you

BarbaraofKent · 22/02/2021 17:51

I frequently bleach my own hair at home, but if you have professional highlights that you have paid good money for, then I really wouldn't mess around with them!

NutellaEllaElla · 22/02/2021 18:18

No I haven't

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2021 18:20

I’ve done mine with John Frieda lightening spray. Spray on, run the straighteners over it, job done.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 22/02/2021 18:24

I actually did. I’m not brave/foolhardy enough to attempt highlights but I used a semi permanent dye to darken my hair a bit to match my roots. Sadly brown dye on blond highlights leaves a green tinge and now I’m having to do weekly red toners to cancel it out.. it looks fine as long as I do that but I wouldn’t really recommend it.

elsaesmeralda · 22/02/2021 18:24

Mines terrible but roll on 12th April but not risking a diy disaster! Going to try and get booked in provisionally ASAP

Reallybadidea · 22/02/2021 18:25

I have quite dark brown hair naturally and I've been highlighting my hair (with dd's help) throughout the last year, with 2 visits to the hairdresser in the summer/autumn. There was one time when I went too light, but once it faded a bit, it was fine.
I've had quite a few compliments and honestly think that the professional ones aren't much better, just less time consuming.

Buttercupcup · 22/02/2021 18:25

@PaperMonster can I ask what shampoo temp colours your highlights please? I need to try something!!

DramaAlpaca · 22/02/2021 18:28

Nope, not doing anything. I'm quite fair anyway and I can live with my roots.

potatopot · 22/02/2021 18:29

Yes, I've used the highlighting boxes from the supermarket. Absolutely fine if you just put a few in along hairline and parting.

Rumdiddly · 22/02/2021 18:30

I have done it without much success using a cap. Not dreadful but enough to make me feel a bit better about myself

DishedUp · 22/02/2021 18:34

I used a toner to tone down my highlights to more my natural colour

It looks okay but is starting to fade now and I miss my blonde highlights so much!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 22/02/2021 18:43

Thanks all, I think I’m just going to leave them and avoid mirrors until 12th April!

Myheadmyheart · 22/02/2021 18:47

I did mine with one of those highlighting kits in a box. Done it for years off and on if I can’t get to the hairdresser.

Then I thought I’d let my natural hair grow down a bit and then I bleached the ends with a brush (see YouTube videos) and it worked fine. Potential to be a disaster though so be careful.

Thoughtcontagion · 22/02/2021 18:52

My roots are at the top of my ears now had an appointment for 18th December, my DD was told to isolate so couldn’t go. No more appointments and was booked for 6th Jan thought it will be done over Xmas not doing anything anyway! Cheers Boris, dark roots, I am not even going to try I know it will be terrible.

DishedUp · 22/02/2021 18:58

@Thoughtcontagion had an appointment for November, rescheduled it for early jan

Right now my highlights are definitely more like dip die!

PaperMonster · 22/02/2021 19:24

@Buttercupcup Bleach London.

Buttercupcup · 22/02/2021 20:03

@PaperMonster thank you ordering now!

amusedbush · 22/02/2021 20:33

This is why I’m glad I go for balayage Grin I had mine done in September so it’s definitely due a refresh but it doesn’t look too bad as it grows out. I’m hoping to eke it out until May so it’s at its best for the summer.

PaperMonster · 23/02/2021 08:28

@Buttercupcup - I leave it on for a few minutes before washing it off. It takes a couple of washes to really show and I now use it on every other wash as I prefer the colour to be a bit paler. Hope you like it!!
