The Man Who Sold The World - covers you didn't know were covers

I love this. It's my favourite Bowie song. Or so I thought.

It was on the radio yesterday and I was only half listening when they were talking about whether Nirvana's version was better than the original. I didn't really pay too much attention. But on Pointless Celebrities tonight they had The Man Who Sold The World as an answer as a Lulu/David Bowie collaboration. I've just googled it and it turns out that I love The Man Who Sold The World by Nirvana! My mind is blown!

Any covers that you love that you didn't know were covers?

According to this it was released in 1970:

I don't quite understand, did you think that Bowie covered a Nirvana song?

Ariela · 21/02/2021 01:25

Some of us bought that one (in Woolies) when it came out in 1970

Soft Cell's Tainted Love.

First recorded in 1964 by a then little known American artist, Gloria Jones, who went on to re-record the song in 1976, in effect covering her own record.

If, as I infer, you think Bowie covered Nirvana and not vice versa, shouldn't your question be "Any songs you love that you thought were covers but aren't?"

FetchezLaVache · 21/02/2021 01:34

...but to answer your actual question, the only Bob Dylan song I have ever liked was Must Be Sana, which I later discovered was a cover.

RJnomore1 · 21/02/2021 01:35

Have you been listening to nirvana thinking it was Bowie?

Whatup · 21/02/2021 01:36

The mib theme will smith is a cover of a song called forget me nots

Fumnudge · 21/02/2021 01:36

Both of the above were shockers to me when I found out. In sure Bowie covered a song that I thought was his own but I can't find which one now.
The Pretenders Stop Your Sobbing was a Kinks song which I didn't know til a few years ago.

Yes Smile I thought when I head The Man Who Sold The World it was David Bowie, but it wasn't it was Nirvana. I listen to too much Radio X. But I love Nirvana's cover.

That's an awesome cover too! As is Where Did Our Love Go... but now not sure if that is a cover or a sample? It's been a long day.

Prince Nothing Compares to You

I also thought Wild Horses was the Sundays not Rolling Stones. I normally hate the RS.

I must be getting REALLY old as the surprise on this thread shocks me.

Waiting for the poster who says tragedy isn't a song by steps....

MNerGoneRogueAgain · 21/02/2021 01:54

BTW, LOVE a cover that's completely different to the original

MrsOrMiss · 21/02/2021 01:57

The Annie Lennox song, No More I Love Yous is a cover. I heard a discussion on the radio a couple of months back and was quite surprised.
All along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix - is too, again I didn't realise.

VampireTheBuffetSlayer · 21/02/2021 02:02

Wait, what? Wild Horses? The Sundays is a completely different song - isn't it?

Well she can't sing or write so 🤷‍♀️
MrsEricBana · 21/02/2021 02:19

Yes I was v disappointed to discover that Johnny Cash's Hurt was a cover.

Fab cover is Travis's version of Hit Me Baby One More Time.

MechantGourmet · 21/02/2021 02:55

Elvis Costello's version of She is wonderful, but I just love his voice tbh.
