The Man Who Sold The World - covers you didn't know were covers

I love this. It's my favourite Bowie song. Or so I thought.

It was on the radio yesterday and I was only half listening when they were talking about whether Nirvana's version was better than the original. I didn't really pay too much attention. But on Pointless Celebrities tonight they had The Man Who Sold The World as an answer as a Lulu/David Bowie collaboration. I've just googled it and it turns out that I love The Man Who Sold The World by Nirvana! My mind is blown!

Any covers that you love that you didn't know were covers?

@CuriousaboutSamphire

We used to do a regular.pub quiz. The barman / quiz setter loved his music. He asked who wrote a specific lyric

Well my time went so quickly
It went lickety splicly
Out to my ol' 55

We answered Tom Waits and lost!

It took weeks, I even had to take the Eagles album I to the pub ( pre internet) and show him the writing credit.

I old. I am really enjoying the errors here. Some made me laugh out loud.

OMFG I didn’t even realised the eagles had covered (and presumably ruined) this, the bastards.

Love the original - the whole Closing Time album is a bloody masterpiece.

I Heard it Through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye is a cover so once I found that out I quite took to Gladys Knight's version.

But, although she released it first, Smokey Robinson recorded it first so Gaye’s version is way down the line!

I've only JUST NOW learnt that Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares to You was actually Prince.

I've never held myself out as a muso or anything but this is just getting embarrassing

@ratspeaker

Sailing by Rod Stewart is a cover of Sutherland Brothers song

1985 by Bowling for Soup is a cover

Tainted Love by both Soft Cell and Marilyn Manson are covers

My favourite covers are
Word Up - Korn
Enjoy the silence- Lacuna Coil
Sound of Silence- Disturbed
Land of Confusion - Disturbed

Sound of Silence by Disturbed is utterly glorious, it makes me prickle in an amazing way

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow there's something about that version of Sound of Silence that feels really apt right now for some reason.Maybe it just fits my lockdown mood!

@SinkGirl

Waiting for the poster who says tragedy isn't a song by steps....

😂😂😂

I feel old too.

Sorry OP, I don’t understand how you thought Kurt Cobain singing was David Bowie. I just... how?!

I don't know either now! I just never thought about it...

[quote Mia184]Btw, a bit off topic but since Nirvana was mentioned: someone once made a great mashup of Nirvana’s Smells like teen spirit and Rick Astley’s Never gonna give you up. I love this video ☺️

I put a spell on you. The original, by Screamin Jay Hawkins Grin

Cam2020 · 22/02/2021 08:48

Make You Feel My Love (Adele, or so I thought) is a Bob Dylan song which was also covered by Billy Joel before Adele did it.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/02/2021 08:53

@Fumnudge

Both of the above were shockers to me when I found out. In sure Bowie covered a song that I thought was his own but I can't find which one now. The Pretenders Stop Your Sobbing was a Kinks song which I didn't know til a few years ago.
Chrissie Hynde was married to Ray Davies for a while.

OMFG I didn’t even realised the eagles had covered (and presumably ruined) this, the bastards. Their version sounds just like an Eagles song Grin

Elledouble · 22/02/2021 10:22

I must be getting REALLY old as the surprise on this thread shocks me.

I remember being at work one day, and my young colleague was humming 'Love me for a reason' - the old Osmonds song which had just been released by Westlife. "I know all the words to that," I said, "I love that song, I used to sing it all the time."

Her reply: "Whaddya mean? It's brand new."

Er - nope. I tried explaining, but she was a bit thick didn't believe me. She was adamant that it was new, original, and that Westlife had written it. Confused

feelingverylazytoday · 22/02/2021 11:15

I found out a good one the other day.
I think we're alone now was a massive hit for Tiffany in the '80s. It was originally recorded by Tommy James and the Shondells in 1967.

Im that old as well, but a lot of the Osmonds songs were covers, The Proud One was another Franki Valli song. I learnt a lot going to see Jersey Boys

Prince wrote loads of songs for other artists. He wrote "Manic Monday" which was a hit for The Bangles
Redannie118 · 22/02/2021 14:58

I only found out recently that Neil Diamond wrote im a believer by the Monkees
I was shocked that The beautiful Calum Scott song Dancing on my own was written and originally recorded by Robyn. I have to admit I hate her version !

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 22/02/2021 15:35

Neil Diamond wrote Red, red wine too, covered by UB40.

Not covers, but the Bee Gees have written loads of songs for other artist: Grease for Frankie Valli, If I Can't Have You for Yvonne Elliman, Woman in Love for Barbra Streisand, Heartbreaker for Dionne Warwick, etc.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 22/02/2021 15:51

Oh and in the 60s lots of songs which were successful in the US and UK were recorded by different artists and successful for different people on either side of the pond, e.g. Anyone Who Had a Heart. Cilla Black in the UK and Dionne Warwick in the US. DW wasn't best pleased apparently.
