BT asking for utility bill before sending an order .. scam?

Looks legit just seems odd and I know there’s a lot of scams going on. Anyone else had this?

What sort of order are they sending?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/02/2021 09:23

Two sets of air pods

Email address looks fine, utility is spelt wrong. Bought through what I assume is the proper BT site.

Rong BT on the contact number on your bill and ring them to check?
If you have the time to sit on hold...

BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/02/2021 09:32

I’m not a BT customer

BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/02/2021 09:32

I’ve rung the number on the email and it’s office hours only

If you're unsure, don't do it.

Tink1990 · 20/02/2021 09:36

A spelling mistake rings alarm bells to me. Whilst it is possible, I am assuming if this was BT and this was standard procedure, they would have a template that their staff would be using and therefore, pre-written so highly unlikely to contain mistakes. I would wait until Monday when you can phone them properly, personally.

ApolloandDaphne · 20/02/2021 09:37

Did you buy the EarPods from BT? Only asking as I wasn't aware they sold stuff like that.

dementedpixie · 20/02/2021 09:38

How much are you paying?
If its crazily cheap then unlikely to be BT

dementedpixie · 20/02/2021 09:40

£125 is the BT price from what I can see

Gliblet · 20/02/2021 09:43

The BT shop is shop.bt.com

I wonder if they've had lots of people trying to scam dodgy refunds out of them by claiming they weren't delivered?

dementedpixie · 20/02/2021 09:49

Or are you going for the pro at £199?
Are you paying in full or monthly?

peak2021 · 20/02/2021 09:59

Mis-spellings are common in scams, according to the training we have had at work.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/02/2021 10:18

Pro £199. Apple shop is £240

Paid in full yesterday using debit card online. They haven’t taken the money from my account yet though. Surely if it was a scam they would have emptied it!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/02/2021 10:20

@Gliblet yes that’s the website. It is ok then?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 20/02/2021 10:21

How strange. Ia it for proof of address maybe?

eurochick · 20/02/2021 10:24

That seems like an identity theft scam. Can you screen shot the request?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/02/2021 10:26

Thanks for your help everyone. I’ve just logged into my account on the website and it says “security check in progress, order pending” ... I should have done that originally Smile

OP posts:
BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/02/2021 10:26

I wonder if it is due to people claiming they haven’t received them, as you said.

If you want to check a potential scam, don't phone the number the potential scammer gives you.

The same goes for email addresses and web pages.

PigletJohn · 20/02/2021 10:50

You say you're not a BT customer. What prompted BT to contact you? How did they know your name and email address?

KettleWentBang · 20/02/2021 10:55

Looks dodgy to me.
It says
Thank you
Thanks.

How weird
