I saw him in 2000 at Glastonbury and was unimpressed (only knew him from Labyrinth before that). I’ve become quite the fan in recent years though.

Damnloginpopup · 20/02/2021 02:34

Was he? Nobody had though do for decades until he died. I found him to be very overrated. Be and Weller has been disappointing since the Jam.
So that's a no from me.

Damnloginpopup · 20/02/2021 02:35

Thought so not though do. Some of the numerous errors this phone likes to make.

Yes he was.

Shame about some of his behaviour with young girls.

But yes. A one off. A true original. Always a performance artist as much as a musician.

My kids love the life on Mars video as do I :)

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2021 05:31

He really was. Especially compared to current 'artists'.

Meh to Paul Weller and the Stone Roses, but I have favourites others probably wouldn't agree with probably!

cabbagedpickles · 20/02/2021 05:36

I can't judge somebody who gave us the dreadful 'laughing gnome' that highly. Bowie, like Prince, was massively overrated. At least Bowie could sing though.

So we have to discount his whole back catalogue because of The Laughing Gnome? Ok then. Confused
Fourcolourpens · 20/02/2021 06:01

I adore David Bowie, alongside Bob Dylan as master of their craft without vocal ability..

ScienceSensibility · 20/02/2021 06:06

He was magnificent. No other musician comes close. And for the ignorant person upthread, Bowie was selling out global tours and releasing multi million selling albums right up to his death. He was still fully active and engaged. I saw him live at least half a dozen times this century!

Never heard of Heathen? Reality? The Next Day? Blackstar?

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 20/02/2021 07:32

He played for the weird kids at the back, same as Freddie sang for us. He was also a genius.

cabbagedpickles · 20/02/2021 09:38

@sparklingbrook I didn't say that.

peak2021 · 20/02/2021 10:04

As a musician and an artist, whether you like his work or not, you cannot deny his influence on 'the weird kids at the back' and many other people.

NiceGerbil · 20/02/2021 18:18

I love look love love Bowie but I think to say he could sing is going a bit far Grin

PolaDeVeboise · 20/02/2021 18:59

He was an 'artist', not a singer. Prince, however, was both. However, IMO, George Michael towers above both. Coincidentally, they all died in the same year.

NiceGerbil · 20/02/2021 19:36

Price, love Prince

Also a genius one off

Have you all seen this

Hepsie · 20/02/2021 19:38

He was fabulous, as was prince.

NiceGerbil · 20/02/2021 19:39

George was a local (ish) boy and I was wham era.

One of my primary school teachers had taught him and Andrew and I knew someone else who knew pepsi and Shirley.

I mean I never met him obv but he was there through my growing up and, dunno. I felt a lot of affection for him.

Such a loss.

His music wasn't always my scene but by God he could belt out a tune. Him at the Freddie Mercury tribute was incredible.

Samcro · 20/02/2021 19:39

Bowie was amazing, saw him on his serious moonlighting tour. He performed brilliantl.
Loved the jam.

Cocolapew · 20/02/2021 19:44

How can you say Prince was overrated? The name was a bloody genius.
Bowie was exceptional too, they were both so good at staying current due to being able to change their sound.

Prince looked awful, sounded awful, and wrote dreadful songs. It's all a matter of opinion and that's mine. You are entitled to yours Grin
mrwalkensir · 20/02/2021 22:19

Bowie thought he was a late starter. If you look at what he'd achieved by 30, it's staggering..

MoodyMarshall · 20/02/2021 22:20

@cabbagedpickles

Are you saying that Prince couldn't sing? He played/sang/produced/performed as if his life depended on it.

MoodyMarshall · 20/02/2021 22:25

@cabbagedpickles (can you tell I'm struggling to accept your verdict? Grin)

Have you listened to Prince? Any of his albums? Early/mid/late Prince? Seen him live? If not, feel free to have me educate you! Grin Who is better than Prince?!

OP, I love Bowie too. And George Michael, my sons and I had a Wham party the other day). I do like extremely cool and recherché music, too, I have Catholic tastes!

ethelredonagoodday · 20/02/2021 22:27

Yep he was incredible. Prince also incredible. It's not a competition... they can both be amazing!

Samcro · 20/02/2021 22:34

I never got prince. Maybe it will happen, i have only just got into the rolling stones.
