Tbf, I saw Prince in concert and was bored. Not my thing, however, he could sing. I appreciate I'm in the minority on this one.

StillMedusa · 20/02/2021 22:45

Bowie was endlessly recreating himself and his music. And he was intelligent, very entertaining and came across really well in interviews.
He was also so so bloody beautiful..in his Ziggy days, His Thin White Duke Days, his middle age...

Saw him in 1997 and he was just incredible!

Samcro · 20/02/2021 22:48

We have the dvd of him at glastonbury he is amazing.

What year, decade did prince become big?

@samcro First Prince album is actually 1978. His decade is definitely the 80s, although he had pockets of success after that. I saw him twice when he had a residency at the O2 in 2007.

Samcro · 20/02/2021 23:03

Thanks, might explain it, in the middle 80s i was not into new music, then the 90s were all wind the bobbin up lol, didn't really getback into music untll ds was a teen.

CherryColouredTwist · 20/02/2021 23:12

Bowie has my heart but Prince is the most underrated guitarist there has ever been and was a genius at everything he turned his hand to.

Samcro · 20/02/2021 23:13

Just watching purple rain on you tube.
Iget why people say he was great

cabbagedpickles · 20/02/2021 23:55
@cabbagedpickles

Are you saying that Prince couldn't sing? He played/sang/produced/performed as if his life depended on it.
He could open his mouth and make a sound come out, I can do that with bagpipes but you don't have to appreciate it.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 21/02/2021 00:14

Never got why people including my husband liked Prince.

Bowie and George Michael are the only famous people I have ever got upset about when they dead. Musical legends ❤

wildasthewind · 21/02/2021 00:22

Bowie was a genius especially his older weird stuff like cygnet committee and "after all" off this planet and " uncle arthur" and "Bewlay Brothers " could go on forever love this man

Hepsie · 21/02/2021 00:25

Philistine Shock

NiceGerbil · 21/02/2021 00:35

I put a link upthread to a performance of While my guitar gently weeps. With a load of famous other people guitaring away. It's a good listen with a great line up. Prince's guitar at the end has a surprise Grin

No Prince isn't for everyone.

The thing I find interesting is that he was really shy. There's a clip of his first appearance on TV and after they play he is interviewed and he literally can't say a word.

Fwiw the song that got me into Prince was Paisley park (I was young). I also love little red Corvette and raspberry beret.

AND the video for kiss is (for me) the sexiest thing in the world ever Grin

No he's not everyone's cup of tea but he was a bona fide musical prodigy who carved his own path. A total original.

NiceGerbil · 21/02/2021 00:36

I suspect Prince was incredible live and I'm pretty gutted I never saw him.

Hepsie · 21/02/2021 00:40

That was good NiceGerbil I hadn't seen that before. Apparently prince was completely self taught. And an incredible guitar player, as highlighted at the end.

Hepsie · 21/02/2021 00:43

Although where does he throw his guitar? It appears to go up...and never come down.

Holothane · 21/02/2021 00:54

Never got Prince, nor the jam, Bowie not mad on either, I don’t follow the crowd.

cabbagedpickles · 21/02/2021 00:56

But do you like bagpipes ? Smile
Firebird83 · 21/02/2021 01:00

I’ve always thought he was a bit overrated, and not a particularly great singer.

Fromthegekko · 21/02/2021 01:01

Bowie was a genius. I put him up on a pedestal with Leonard Cohen. Absolute one-offs who inspired so many.

NiceGerbil · 21/02/2021 03:12

Yes Hepsie!

There's all those famous guitar chaps doing their thing and then.. they hand it off to him at the end. They are all grinning at him cos they know what's coming. I mean he can play the sodding guitar. It's, that thing about making it sing. That's what he does there and he's so happy!

And then boom! Where'd it go? Awesome.

His music changed a lot over the years and a lot of it is not to my taste tbh. But he was a genuine prodigy, an original.

Hepsie if you like then maybe try the video to kiss. Looking back I do seem to fancy a certain type of man. Prince, Bowie, Tim curry in rocky horror...

NiceGerbil · 21/02/2021 03:19

Other OP things.

Stone roses- I was going to indie clubs then and their first album is excellent. Not a poor song on it.

The jam? Nice tunes. OP style council came after if you like the jam.

Oh Bowie-

Starman
Ziggy stardust (is that the name of the song?) - Ziggy played guitar etc

NiceGerbil · 21/02/2021 03:20

I never got the hang of Leonard Cohen.

Or Bob Dylan.

Oh well Grin

MoodyMarshall · 21/02/2021 07:23

@Holothane

I don't follow the crowd, either, but I recognise genius when I hear it. Like I said upthread, I've got Catholic tastes. What do you like listening to? Smile

DinosaurDiana · 21/02/2021 07:24

No. He wouldn’t have been what he was without Mick Ronson, who died of cancer penniless.
