I've given myself constipation-when will it wear off?

I took anti-diarrhoea tablets on Saturday night (because I had a loose movement).
I think it was a one off but I took the full dose.
I've researched them and apparently the way they work is preventing one's bowels from contracting.

I'm in so much pain, I can tell I'm bunged up but straining yesterday made me bleed! Ugh.

Juice.
Orange or better yet prune.
Get some fluids in.

MajorMujer · 18/02/2021 07:41

Should have worn off by now. Try glycerin suppositories, as the stool may have dried out (HCA)

Lots of apples

It's Thursday I highly doubt this is related to the anti diarreah tablets. What did you take, Imodium or similar? How many did you take?

Rainbowaftertherain · 18/02/2021 07:44

Thank you
I'm at work but hammering the orange squash until lunchtime when I'll go get some juices. I'm worried I've given myself permenant damage :(

Maybe next time don't run to the medicine cabinet too soon. Try more fibre like wholegrains too but please be careful, don't just jump to the next tablets of laxatives

Just a supermarket version. It said to take 2 upon symptoms occurring, then one each time one gets a loose bowel movement. I took four altogether, didn't overdose.

I know. I was going to see my partner for first time in months and I really didn't want to be needing the loo all the time, not very attractive is it.. But I am regretting it now :(

It definitely feels very dry when I'm trying to 'go' so to speak :( It's so painful.

Prunes and coffee. Works pretty quickly. Lay off the beige food today if possible.
Hot water bottle on your tummy to soothe the pain. Hope you feel better soon.

Lucked · 18/02/2021 07:51

There won’t be any permanent damage. Don’t strain too much though because that is unhealthy.

If you can get relief from natural foods like prunes and orange juices pop in and see a pharmacist later today.

DinosaurDiana · 18/02/2021 07:51

Prunes, prunes and more prunes.

Coffee was my first thought-I will be on a drip today!

I'm usually really healthy too. I've got a big salad for lunch, I so seldom do beige food but staying with my partner I have done for last few days. I will really try to not strain, I cannot wait until this is over!

Drink lots of water too. If there is no movement you could take a gentle overnight laxative.

migrainehell · 18/02/2021 08:03

Orange squash isn't going to cut it. I'd stick to water and lots of it.

midgedude · 18/02/2021 08:07

Pop your feet on a stool when on the loo to help the flow

Massage your tummy clockwise

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2021 08:13

Full of s**t, you are.

custardbear · 18/02/2021 08:20

Pure OJ and prunes/prune juice. You could try senna or lactulose has quicker effects

With diarrhoea sometimes it's best to let it happen as your body is rejecting something, so best to get rid rather than take anti-diarrhoea meds

I guess It's 99% water. I'm not even attempting to go to the loo yet. I wonder if It's a case of waiting for the medicine to wear off, or maybe if I eat it'll eventually get forced out. I really don't want to cause myself any problems! :(

Thanks all

Pharmacist here, as PP said a glycerin suppository is great and works within 20mins approximately. You may have a hard job getting them as they’ve been out of stock but are starting to come back in. If you don’t want a suppository you can try senna or bisacodyl as they work the opposite way to your anti diarrhoea tablets (loperamide). They can cause abdominal pain. Also don’t go too heavy on the fibre as it’s been quite a while since you’ve been so you’re only adding more bulk after a long line of dry faeces. You can try that once you’ve successfully got rid of the “plug”.

I so wish I'd have done that! I just didn't want to risk being poorly at her house :(

Thank you so much for responding! I will go to Asda on my break and see what I can get there

Don’t worry OP you won’t have done any permanent damage and using a suppository or some laxatives as a one off also won’t do any damage. Lots of fluids, not too heavy on the fibre until you start going again and think of the P’s-pure fruit juice, prunes, peaches and pears. Dried apricots are also really good. A mild laxative to stimulate the bowel like senna or bisocodyl (available in the supermarket/or a pharmacy) or a glycerin suppository if you feel it’s more the other end that needs softened up. In future I would avoid loperamide unless absolutely unavoidable as often loose stool is our body’s way of getting rid of something which hasn’t agreed with it or if it goes on for more than a couple of days seek medical advice. I am a gastro nurse and this happens to lots of people try not to worry.

Thank you so much This is so so painful! I eat very healthily 95% of the time, not had this problem before at all!
