I've given myself constipation-when will it wear off?

I took anti-diarrhoea tablets on Saturday night (because I had a loose movement).
I think it was a one off but I took the full dose.
I've researched them and apparently the way they work is preventing one's bowels from contracting.

I'm in so much pain, I can tell I'm bunged up but straining yesterday made me bleed! Ugh.

They didnt have anything suitable at the supermarket so I'm going to call and get what people have recommended from the larger supermarket on the way home. I ate a spinach salad for lunch with seeds and faux chicken pieces but I'm going to eat some spicy tomato soup tonight (may help?) And have a hot bath. I've drank 4 litres of squash and had 3 sugary coffees. Still bunged.

Lactulose, you need to ask the pharmacist for it. Take it first thing in the morning, before you have anything to drink. Try to be within easy reach of a loo after taking it, especially after if you eat something.

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2021 14:10

Failing that, a big dose of epsom salts.

Full medicine measurement cap of lactulose and a full glass of prune juice. Might gush out like the river in Willy wonker and the chocolate factory but you'll soon be unclogged!!

Rainbowaftertherain · 18/02/2021 15:41

Well I left work early because I was in so much pain. I cant wee properly either (nothing wrong there but I think just too much pressure on my bladder from constipation!) Rang gp, cant give me an appointment until tomorrow. Bought oranges and OJ. Pharmacist sold me some senakot max strength.. should i take it? I have just read about lactolose.. but the thought of having to leave the house again :( should I take a senakot and go to bed for a bit? I'm so worried how long I'll be like this!
Many thanks all of you
This is horrible!

I second the glycerin suppository, you need to attack it upwards as opposed to downwards iyswim

LadyJaye · 18/02/2021 15:51

STOP TAKING STUFF.

From somebody with IBS who used to try to mess around with my gut function, just leave things be, you're only making things worse. Drink water (warm, if you can tolerate it), keep moving, you'll be fine. If you're getting really bloaty, adding some Epsom salts to some warm water can help, but it's mostly just time.

Your gut is sensitive, don't fuck around with it.

Rainbowaftertherain · 18/02/2021 15:52

Okay. I'll leave this stuff. I've drank so much fluid today!

Lie on your side & massage your stomach. Not everything works on everyone.

FossilisedFanny · 18/02/2021 16:00

It’s dried out, it needs lubrication. Glycerin suppository up your bum , job done.

aliloandabanana · 18/02/2021 16:13

I always worry about these threads and second the posters advising not to start trying various foods and drinks. The glycerine suppository should help.

PhilCornwall1 · 18/02/2021 16:20

It was only a case of the shits, why take that stuff?

My arse is rammed solid at the moment, but that's because of painkillers. Harpic and a stiff brush will sort me out. 💩

dane8, I think you mean Lactulose not Lactose.

Repeating what others have said op - glycerin suppositories all the way. I suffer ongoing constipation due to endo and the painkillers taken for it. The relief they give is a magical feeling! All the oral laxatives just end up giving me wind and then the runs. Once you've used it, I'd suggest prune juice for a couple days to keep the flow active. It doesn't taste nice but is more bearable cold.

As we are both in the same boat, we could run a book on who shits first.

Coffee and a fag first thing in the morning always does the trick for me!(not serious advice)

I contemplated having a cigarette! I heard that works! I've not smoked in decades Grin

I really feel for you! This is first time in 20 years I've had this! Couldt find any prune juice at the supermarket though :(

This advice was given to me by a friend whose mum had been a nurse in the 50s. Trim one finger nail to a sensible length and carefully file off any snaggy bits. Retire to the bathroom and drop kecks. Lubricate the selected digit, lean forward with the knees apart and gently insert aforementioned digit into the oxo tower. Push the plug until it has retreated and cleared the chute. It should only need to be done once if its done correctly, then sit back and relax. You may not want to "go" immediately but don't forget that something is imminent. You never know but this may open up a new horizon for you as well.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/02/2021 16:44

I find a very long walk far away from any toilets brings on a tremendous urge to go!

I may give it a go though. I'm in the bath and my nails are short anyway...
