Any recommendations please?

I though the Hobbit but I've just been reading and apparently it's also a bit violent/scary.

I think it depends on the child. My 5 yo dd and 7yo ds love the hobbit movies but my 8yo dd finds it too scary.

Have you tried labyrinth or willow?

mdh2020 · 15/02/2021 08:22

The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe and the other Narnia movies.

reprehensibleme · 15/02/2021 08:23

Princess Bride?

There’s an animated version of LOTR that might be a more gentle introduction. Also an animated film called Flight of Dragons which has similar wizards/dragons/quest themes

clydeonabike · 15/02/2021 08:30

The Percy Jackson movies are good and a bit fantastical without being scary

ImTeamLogan · 15/02/2021 08:38

Haven't tried any of these. Not really my taste but I have a feeling that DC might fantasy more than I do so thought we'd give it a go.
Youngest is quite wary of weird characters more than violence/fighting.

Princess Bride is an excellent suggestion.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 15/02/2021 08:41

Bridge to Terabithia, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Five Children and It

ImTeamLogan · 15/02/2021 08:44

I seem to recall Mark Kermode loving the Princess Bride. Probably a good one to try.

How to train your Dragon

Namechangeforthis88 · 15/02/2021 08:47

Princes Bride, Labyrinth, Willow, the Neverending Story. I'd put these into Amazon to buy (without buying) and see what else e suggested.

Bridge to Terabithia is great but very sad towards the end. You have been warned.

HugeAckmansWife · 15/02/2021 09:12

All those, and the Narnia stories. Star Wars? (the original 3 anyway). Harry Potter.. Again maybe just the first 2 for now?

GooodMythicalMorning · 15/02/2021 09:18

Bridge to terabithia is a horrible movie for kids! All 4 of us thought it was awful thinking it was going to be a light fantasy film. nope!

mdh2020 · 15/02/2021 09:19

My DS used to preview movies and fast forward through any bits that he deemed too scary for his children, I’d agree with Never Ending Story. Its wonderful.

ISaySteadyOn · 15/02/2021 10:22

Just coming on to say Willow and Neverending Story. But more Willow because it has the delightful Warwick Davis in it.

TickledOnion · 15/02/2021 10:30

The boy who would be king is pretty good.

Doyouwantanothercuppa · 15/02/2021 10:34

The BBC series Merlin is a big hit with my 7yo.

Primitivo1 · 15/02/2021 10:36

Second the series Merlin here... and there 60+ episodes!

bruffin · 15/02/2021 10:40

Bridge to terabithia

Its very sad and not really a fantasy film, even though it was marketed it as such

titchy · 15/02/2021 10:42

No suggestions but I misread your title as 'Lord of the flies' and thought WTF.... I'll get my coat. Blush

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/02/2021 10:53

Flight of the Navigator?

CandyLeBonBon · 15/02/2021 11:29

And lion the witch and the wardrobe for that matter!

I disagree, as do my children, who all thought it was a great film. I guess we're all different
