Any recommendations please?

I though the Hobbit but I've just been reading and apparently it's also a bit violent/scary.

Star Wars? The first trilogy (i.e. the Carrie Fisher/Harrison Ford ones from the 70s and 80s). I know it's sci-fi rather than fantasy but the basic quest-style story is very similar.

Slightly different kind of fantasy but some of the 70s Disney ones might be worth a shot... Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Pete's Dragon, One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing, Blackbeard's Ghost

Stardust might be a good choice, I love that movie.

Candylebonbon
It was mismarketed as a fantasy film. We saw it at the cinema, my DC were so disappointed because they had seen the adverts. I thought it was a good film, but i wouldnt recommend it as they type of film OP is looking for .
OP said they wanted suitable films and Lord of the Rings wasnt suitable, so not sure why you are comparing them.

Stranger Things

Stompythedinosaur · 15/02/2021 12:34

I'm surprised at some of the suggestions here - my 7yo would have found things like Stranger Things far too scary. The animated LOTR is excellent but still pretty scary.

Fantasy films we have liked are:
Labyrinth
Onwards
Strange Magic
Ella Enchanted

AcornOnTheGround · 15/02/2021 13:00

Inkheart is brilliant

Prestel · 15/02/2021 14:08

Yes to Ella Enchanted and Inkheart, both very family friendly. As is the modern remake of Journey to the Centre of the Earth, though that's straying a little from the Lord of the Rings territory.
My two are teenagers so I was just reading out of curiosity what people might suggest and must admit to being a little disappointed. Most of the suggestions are all so old! Do they not make fantasy adventure films for younger children anymore? Seems a shame.

Eragon

sausagepastapot · 15/02/2021 14:27

DS (and me and DH!) loves The Great Escapists on Netflix. A few swear words in it (PG) but its awesome and all about getting off a desert island using natural resources.

HugeAckmansWife · 16/02/2021 08:35

Oh Merlin.. Not a film but perfect series. Gets a little dark later on but if LOTR is OK then it would be fine.

ImTeamLogan · 16/02/2021 10:03

We got less than 5 minutes into Merlin. A beheading and slightly weird old lady and that was enough. Maybe my children scare easily! It did look really good.

You never really see anything graphic. I do think a lot depends on the kids, it's all relative.

BraveBananaBadge · 16/02/2021 12:54

Onward is brilliant! I'm always sneaking it on for them just so I can watch it myself.

JaninaDuszejko · 16/02/2021 13:23

Princess Bride is an excellent suggestion

DD1 hated it because the portrayal of the princess is very old fashioned (her role is to basically scream and be saved by the men).

Otherwise my 8yo has loved Star Wars (the originally trilogy), Stardust, the original Jurassic Park (but the teenager refused to watch it because it was too scary). We do mainly watch animations though, so many fantasy film supposedly aimed at kids are 12s these days. Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, the new Jurassic Park Films, Ghostbusters, any superhero film.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/02/2021 16:14

I thought of another one we liked - the Studio Ghibli Wizard of Earthsea.

BraveBananaBadge · 16/02/2021 16:17

Oh yes Stompy, we watched Arriety the other day. Very gentle, Sunday afternoon movie. My Neighbour Totoro is great for all ages, DS6 likes Spirited Away but it makes my youngest cry I find it a bit creepy myself but DP loves it
