What to buy in Lidl?!

.... just that. Tunbridge Wells finally has a Lidl. I have just queued up and wandered round like an idiot, trying to remember the things everyone on here recommends. I've ended up with 200 tea bags - Earl Grey and much cheaper than Sainsbury's - plus a load of cheese, chocolate and vegetables. Any tips for "better than Sainsbury's and Tesco's"? Is the cat food any good?

The premium coleslaw is the best ever.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 14/02/2021 14:15

No cat but the bakery items are usually good and the cheese which I see you have already purchased.
I rate their fruit and veg but I think that can be quite store specific.
Some random bits I like
Their cream crackers (don’t know why but they are better than any others!)
Jars of pickled beetroot and gherkins
Their posh crisps (particularly the salt and vinegar ones)
Jams
Lemon sorbet
Bin bags and cleaning cloths
Own brand face wipes
And everything in their Italian week!

When they have their country food specials in, get the Alpenfest frozen pretzels 😋😋

GCITC · 14/02/2021 14:18

Salami and nduja pizza, in the fridge. Beautiful

isitspringyet · 14/02/2021 14:19

The wine

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/02/2021 14:20

Their kids' wellies with flashing lights are bomb proof.

ShoeJunkie · 14/02/2021 14:20

Jars of sun dried tomatoes/peppers/ aubergines.

fireplaceburning · 14/02/2021 14:20

Yes the lemon sorbet is delicious

Dyinghouseplant · 14/02/2021 14:21

Chocolate filled doughnut from the bakery section.
Snacking cucumbers and peppers (probably aimed at kids but I love them).

SnowyTheCat · 14/02/2021 14:21

Bakery is very good, especially the croissants and pretzels (ooh and the Portuguese custard tarts). It's all so cheap compared to our co-op which has a similar bakery sections.

We like the big caramelised onion quiche, the fresh orange juice, creamy yoghurts in individual pots, big coconut yoghurt pot. They do these little chocolate sticks which are a rip off of the Kinder ones which are very nice, the strawberry and cappuccino ones are good. Small glass bottles of tonic (although our local one only does one flavour and MIL's one has loads of different ones). The deluxe fish pie from the fridge section is extremely good! All the deluxe ready meals I've tried have been great.

isitspringyet · 14/02/2021 14:22

Deluxe lemon tart
Dishwasher tablets
Coffee pods
Sourdough fresh bread

Imagineit · 14/02/2021 14:55

Farmhouse multi seeded loaves are my favourite bread

Lobsterquadrille2 · 14/02/2021 15:09

Thank you! I've made a list for my second visit. I love lemon so both sorbet and tart are on it, and I wish I'd thought of bin bags - so obvious now.

The big tubs of Greek yoghurt with honey are the nicest of all the brands/supermarkets I've tried, and only about 75p. I buy half a dozen at a time when I'm in there.

I second the cream crackers, they are about 40p for a huge packet. I love their £3.99 perfume. Nuts and seeds are good and their own brand twix equivalents are half the price of normal Twix. I like Apricot wheats breakfast cereal.
Facade1983 · 14/02/2021 15:27

If you like whisky, their range of Ben Bracken single malts is excellent and cheap. DH likes their beer and lager too.
Don't stick to your list - the utterly random stuff in the aisle of oddities (MN term) often includes some genuinely useful bargains alongside the things no one could possibly want.....

Igneococcus · 14/02/2021 15:28

Their seasalt crackers are loved by everybody in this house, also the rosemary version.
Most of my favourite Lidl things are specials, like when they have French week and I buy a load of the cheese they have on special then. Or the antipasti during Greek week.

HauntedPencil · 14/02/2021 15:34

Cured meats salami etc are good

In the summer their ice creams v good

Mine has rubbish fruit & veg -goes off very quickly

Cleaning products all good - dishwasher tablets & washing capsules and that type of thing.

HauntedPencil · 14/02/2021 15:35

The bakery is as PP said amazing - the sourdough bread is so cheap compared to other places and the crusty tiger loaf

Not so good for me

Toilet paper - dosent last so false economy
Beans

HauntedPencil · 14/02/2021 15:36

If you eat meat steaks are very good

ReviewingTheSituation · 14/02/2021 15:37

Greek yogurt - it's proper greek yog, not greek-style.

Wine, beer, granola, baking ingredients (esp nuts), rice cakes and other snacks, their 'deluxe' salmon knocks spots off Waitrose's, fruit and veg is excellent at ours (keeps for ages).
And my overlocker came from there too!

The only things I wouldn't buy again are their cous cous and tonic water.

MNerGoneRogueAgain · 14/02/2021 15:38

Lidl middle!!!

Deinosavros · 14/02/2021 15:38

@00100001 This Thursday! 🥨

Keep an eye on the themed weekly food specials, Greek week is the best (the circular cheese pies are very good), but they're all great.

MadisonMontgomery · 14/02/2021 15:39

We just got a Lidl so haven’t tried loads yet, but the potato salad is lovely!

moirarosebabay · 14/02/2021 15:40

The mini caramel shortcakes and chocolate brownie 5 packs from the biscuit cake aisle are the best I've ever tasted.
