What to buy in Lidl?!

.... just that. Tunbridge Wells finally has a Lidl. I have just queued up and wandered round like an idiot, trying to remember the things everyone on here recommends. I've ended up with 200 tea bags - Earl Grey and much cheaper than Sainsbury's - plus a load of cheese, chocolate and vegetables. Any tips for "better than Sainsbury's and Tesco's"? Is the cat food any good?

Lentil curls (with the crisps), their meat is usually good, 1ltr tubs of full fat yoghurt, garlic dough balls. Oh and the middle of Lidl of course.

insancerre · 14/02/2021 15:48

Well, what do you need?

Their milk chocolate is good. They do a fruit and nut one - 200g for 83p!

Kids love the jelly beans. As nice as Shelly Belly but about 80p a pack.

The cereals are great (we like the fruit and fibre and 'Shreddies' especially).

The rice pudding in a tin is nicer than Ambrosia IMO.

Their own American-style ice cream in a tub is like rip-off Ben and Jerry's and is really nice - we like the one with chocolate fish and caramel sauce it's about £1.79 for a 500ml tub. The mini Magnum-style ice creams are great too (£2.50 for 12).

The bakery is fab. The rest of it is a bit meh.

polkadotpjs · 14/02/2021 15:55

Now want to go to Lidl. Been crazy there of late and too busy but I love a pretzel and the yoghurt. Cheese is great too there. Great value and delicious.

PaperMonster · 14/02/2021 16:04

Angus beef burgers. There’s some cheese with smoked paprika on which is lovely. I also like their roll-on deodorant and their shampoo. And their chocolate is fab!

Oh I miss Lidl - have lived overseas for 3 years but returning this summer.

My favourite things were their free range chickens, Pedro Jiminez and pink champagne. A lot of the booze is good but not always available. Can’t wait to reacquaint myself! Love the middle aisles and random country weeks! Enjoy!

ParkheadParadise · 14/02/2021 16:19

Henry Hippos, they are even better than M&S Percy pigs. I love Percy pigs but I've now bought both and can't tell the difference.

polarbearoverthere · 14/02/2021 16:22

Their sour cherry jam is delicious!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 14/02/2021 16:25

Everything that everyone has already said! I love our local Lidl and do most of my shopping there. They do a gorgeous hummus that's topped with pesto and Parmesan cheese. Gnocchi stuffed with Parma ham and Brie. Love the bakery section. Meat is excellent (steaks are amazing) and the wine of course! But even the "everyday" items are good quality so there's very little I have to go elsewhere for. In our shop the staff are very friendly and helpful, I don't ever feel under pressure at the checkout (though I am very organised and have several heavy duty bags ready to load into!) Their fresh flowers are always gorgeous too 💐

wiltingflower · 14/02/2021 16:31

Their face cream, herbal teas, little chocolate bars, all the bakery goodies

FtmNov22 · 14/02/2021 16:32

The Lasagne is good, only thing my partner will eat pre made so that says something!
Their jar pasta sauces and jar curry sauce with the powder at the top are tasty!
If your a fan of pizzas the frozen black box ones are very good! And the beef drizzled chips are the best!
I shop at lidl every week for our big shop!

ellabluebella · 14/02/2021 16:34

bakery items, luxury coleslaw, Lidl brand wotsits and the £4/5 Rioja are regulars in our shopping.
Also cant fault most of the brand knock off biscuits ( twix/penguin etc)

Woolysock · 14/02/2021 16:37

Salted caramel dark chocolate, so nice.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 14/02/2021 16:43

Salted caramel hot chocolate

Why thank you for this insight Grin
hedgehogger1 · 14/02/2021 16:44

Their low GI bread from the bakery is lovely

Deathraystare · 14/02/2021 16:50

Cannot go wrong with the smoked salmon or Trout and oh! The potato salad with creme fraiche. Sadly for me it is a big pot and I would eat the lot in one sitting so I avoid it (sobs). Their washing liquitabs are ok too.

Their knock off biccys and choccies are good too. When I had little money I used to buy their cheese topped rolls.

Deathraystare · 14/02/2021 16:52

Dad liked their German sausages which used to be 'seasonal' around bbq time. Some of their liquers too are great.

UseOfWeapons · 14/02/2021 16:53

Bourbons are better than anywhere else. Coconut Greek yoghurt is lush. I do most of my shopping there. I’d avoid the soups,, they’re like dishwater.

In these times, supermarket shopping is one of the highlights of my week. Chained to a laptop Monday to Friday, 90 year old mother with a broken hip to visit at weekends, so interesting food (I don't drink) is high in my list. All these suggestions are hugely appreciated, thank you.

@PaperMonster

The premium coleslaw is the best ever.
Yes, especially the yoghurt coleslaw. Just the same as Waitrose.
BarbaraofSeville · 14/02/2021 17:03

Hortus Gin
Frozen 3 fish roast
Portuguese custard tarts in the bakery section
Mackies crisps if they have them

But seeing as the shops are always quite small and you've time on your hands, go when its not too busy if you can and just look at everything, and buy what you fancy. Get a trolley because you're likely to buy more than you planned and you're not allowed to take the baskets past the tills.

lunar1 · 14/02/2021 17:03

The cheap 89p Brie is always perfectly ripe. I also buy their Camembert for baking.

Avoid avocado and soft fruit.

EileenGC · 14/02/2021 17:08

Middle aisles. Anything with a discount on Lidl Plus Grin
