What to buy in Lidl?!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 14/02/2021 14:01

.... just that. Tunbridge Wells finally has a Lidl. I have just queued up and wandered round like an idiot, trying to remember the things everyone on here recommends. I've ended up with 200 tea bags - Earl Grey and much cheaper than Sainsbury's - plus a load of cheese, chocolate and vegetables. Any tips for "better than Sainsbury's and Tesco's"? Is the cat food any good?

Yes, especially the yoghurt coleslaw. Just the same as Waitrose

I think they come from the same supplier. Doesn't mean that they're exactly the same, but they could well be.

Forgot to mention that Lidl also do some copycat McDs chicken nuggets OP.

The lemon doughnuts from the bakery- they have lemon curd stuffed in the middle and lovely frosting

pophop · 14/02/2021 17:17

Their refrigerated soup is the best I've tasted, especially the chicken and rice. We buy a lot of their vitamin juice cartons.

The barista americano coffee with tbe orange lid is the best instant coffee I've had.
Chocolate brownie from bakery is orgasmic.
Their bakery baguettes are gorgeous too.
We also love their triple cooked beef dripping frozen chips.

cookiemonster5 · 14/02/2021 17:26

The soured cream and chive wheel crisps. They are the best crisps ever!!! The only problem is once you open the packet you WILL finish it. I wish they made them in smaller packets.

MyDogCalledMax · 14/02/2021 17:30

I love their potato gratin...only 99p and so good! The bakery is excellent and I also buy nuts and seeds from there as they are far cheaper than other supermarkets.

Needallthesleep · 14/02/2021 17:32

The Espresso Salted Caramel low calorie ice cream is amazing, and only £1.99!

kowari · 14/02/2021 17:33

95% cocoa chocolate
Full fat Greek yogurt
Frozen berries

HappyThursdays · 14/02/2021 17:33

Middle of Lidl :)

Henry hippos
Own brand cheese and crisps
We get their bottled fizzy water
Dog chicken fillets and dental sticks

kowari · 14/02/2021 17:34

And mixed seeds

Our cat does very well on their premium dry cat food - we generally use the 'neutered' variety, but he's had 'adult' on occasion. He loves their stick treats!!

My teenage DSs rate Lidl Freeway cola above the big brands because it's less fizzy, apparently. I actively choose their Deluxe Earl Grey (switched from Twinings) and we all prefer their own Speculoos biscuits over Lotus.

I just wish they didn't dock the root ends off their leeks, grrr...

Lobsterquadrille2 · 14/02/2021 18:20

@LadyMonicaBaddingham thank you, I'm going to add cat food to my increasing list.

It probably is a bit sad, but we've been waiting for a Lidl for ages and the opening has been delayed because of lockdown. Others feel the same way - the Sainsbury's almost opposite had no queue but newly opened Lidl had a lengthy wait.

Bakery items, especially the cheese topped rolls
Nuts - so cheap compared to other shops
Dried fruit - mango/ apricots and prunes all good and cheap
Lots of good cheese at good prices - I get goats cheese, halloumi and feta
Also like their snacking mini peppers and cucumbers

Motherhentoall · 14/02/2021 19:08

Chocolate ginger biscuits & blackcurrant high juice.

Those are the 2 items that drag me back 🤤

katienana · 14/02/2021 19:12

Fin Carre whole nut chocolate
Face cream
Kids waterproofs
Pizzas
Ham
Deluxe seeded bread
Olives
Chocolate bars in a blue packet shaped like a Toblerone

Lidl's deluxe hummus, there's 3 different types all lovely. Feta, halloumi, most of their cheese, they sometimes have special cheeses in at Christmas, Easter, etc. They do frozen potato gratins/ dauphinois can't remember which but handy to have in the freezer as are their beef dripping chips. They had lovely fair trade chocolate with caramelised chopped nuts but I've not seen it for ages. Love their cremant and they do an ice wine round about Christmas which is also delicious. I buy their Pedro X Sherry for my Christmas pudding. As pp said their sea salt crackers and posh crisps, I like the roast chicken and beef. They sometimes have gin and tonic olives with lemon, like these too. I'm sure I will think of more things to add to the list!

QueenPaw · 14/02/2021 19:40

My cat likes the fake dreamies and given he's currently glaring at me for daring to offer him wafer thin chicken, that's high praise

Bubbles1st · 14/02/2021 19:43

I like the yoghurts, surprised I really like the Mayo

They do some chilled noodles which I love!!

Redruby2020 · 14/02/2021 23:54

@UseOfWeapons

Bourbons are better than anywhere else. Coconut Greek yoghurt is lush. I do most of my shopping there. I’d avoid the soups,, they’re like dishwater.
Dishwater 🤣🤣
timtam23 · 15/02/2021 00:33

The fresh bakery especially Portuguese custard tarts, pretzels, goats' cheese & tomato focaccia. Cheese-topped rolls. Sliced German rye bread with sunflower seeds. Deluxe sourdough pizzas in the chilled section. Deluxe frozen side of salmon with lemon & dill. Mini cucumbers, great for lunch boxes and snacks. Nuts and seeds. They do two big, boxed, iced birthday cakes - one chocolate, one Madeira sponge - which are massive and really good value for a kids' party cake. All of the German Lübeck marzipan goodies at Christmas. Chocolate coated stollen bites at Christmas. Lots of the random bits in "the middle of Lidl"

Teddy1970 · 15/02/2021 00:53

Their tea used to be rubbish but it's really good now, Kensington tea it's called, oh and another vote for the lasagne in the chilled aisle.

Teddy1970 · 15/02/2021 00:55

Sorry it's called Knightsbridge tea, not Kensington, I knew it was a posh area of London somewhere!

ThatDoesntBelongInAIBU · 15/02/2021 00:58

Their brand cookie dough ice cream is better than Ben and Jerry’s

BarbaraofSeville · 15/02/2021 03:03

Massive jars of gherkins for hardly anything, but don't buy unless you are very strong or have specialist equipment, as they're impossible to open.

DP is very strong and even he has to use heavy duty rubber gloves for extra grip to open them. I have no chance and would probably break a wrist trying.
