When the fuck did I learn how to ‘mum dance’?

Im devastated. Just watched a video that the kids took of me dancing Sad

I was a proper raver in the 90s, glow sticks and all night raves. WTF happened. I was never a swayer. I was doing this weird thing with my arms arms. Feet rooted to the spot.

Very ageing Sad

I’m only 41. This year has been the pitts!

I bet Dawn O'Porter is a MNetter.

If you're here Dawn, nice dancing

Frangipaniflower · 14/02/2021 13:27

I'm in my 50's and my son was trying to teach me how to 'shuffle', the dance they do on tiktok. He was laughing so much he had to lie down 😳

ForestYeti · 14/02/2021 14:10

I totally get this! I think it’s because we were used to just dancing to dance music at raves so haven’t a clue how to dance to any other music, that’s my excuse anyway!

potatopot · 14/02/2021 14:21

I've always been a terrible dancer, so glad to see the rest of my generation falling into line with me.

I remember dancing around at a rave in the 90s, thinking I looked great, and overhearing a guy say to his mate 'she looks like she needs a piss' ConfusedGrin

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 14/02/2021 14:24

I don’t know! Thinking about YouTube vids but what would I search?

‘Used to be a raver but forgot how to dance’
‘2021 dance moves’
‘How to dance but not mum like’
‘How to dance with out big boobs getting in your way’
‘Dance but not swaying’

Grin

I never could dance. Feel grateful you had your glory days!

DrFoxtrot · 14/02/2021 14:25

At least you had other dancing skills at one time, I have ALWAYS mum danced Blush.

Northernsoullover · 14/02/2021 14:30

When I worked in an office, at the Christmas party, every year without fail the best dancer was a much older lady than the twenty somethings on the sales team. We used to nudge and say " look at Val go" she was just full of rhythm and natural. Val was child-free!! So this proves it! Have children, lose your beat Sad

Northernsoullover · 14/02/2021 14:36

Omg, I've just watched that 90s compilation. I am beyond grateful that that camera phones and social media weren't a thing in my raving days.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 14/02/2021 14:39

@BusySittingDown

I think you birth your dancing skills along with your placenta. Soz.

Apparently, I "Mum Dance" too, according to DD1 (13). Meh, I'm having a good time so who gives...?

This!!!

Maybe it was the music ... grab some glow sticks, pop SL2 On a Ragga Tip on. I guarantee you won't physically be able to sway! Grin

BeautifulStar · 14/02/2021 14:41

I used to be the first one on the podium in my rave days, even used to get told what a great dancer I was.
Put my Spotify on after drinking a bottle of champagne at the weekend and proper went for it, all the old moves - I was was sweating my tits off but having a blast. Then I saw my dc’s giving one another the side-eye and smirking “come on kids, dance with me!!” I shouted. “Nah, you’re alright mum” they chortled.
Then I caught sight of myself in the mirror and understood....I looked like my great aunt Joan at a family “do” in the 80’s gyrating to Black Lace.
I was a bit horrified but it won’t stop me dancing!

@UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter

Hello all you fellow ex ravers. I thought I was so cool clubbing in Leeds in the mid 90’s. Bet if I was now watching my younger self I’d probably see a shit dancer who was off her tits thinking she was the bees knees.

So glad that the drug scene is not quite so prevalent now. Have a 23 and a 19 yr old sons and they say that the drugs are for losers now. Although they probably always were.

With the exception of a few smokes of a boyfriends spliff and mistakenly eating space cake in Amsterdam - one of the scariest nights of my life - I was always too scared to really do drugs but in my friendship circle it was rife. I just had a few drinks. I loved that time though, amazing nights/mornings out. We were so lucky to have that madness without worrying we would end up on SM.

Our kids will never have that release of that perfect night out dancing until the sun comes up.

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 14/02/2021 14:59

@notacooldad

Back in the day ( about 30 years ago) me and my mate used to go to a night club in town after we'd been around the pubs. At this point we were clearly off our heads! At the nightclub we would be up dancing thinking we were the best thing ever. One night, for whatever reason we didn't go out until late so went straight to the club -sober. We were absolutely mortified to find that the club video the dance floor and play it the following week on loads of screens around the club. Wed never noticed before. There we were, seeing what we looked like. It was like being trapped in some horror film confronted with all these horrific images of yourself!😂😂
Grin

Love this! A bar I used to attend did this with photos- thankfully no videos! And we were always mortified when we saw the photo we were sure we had looked gorgeous in Grin

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 14/02/2021 14:59

A bar I used to attend???? Attend? Confused Grin

LizBennet · 14/02/2021 15:01

Oh God I’m 41 too and have adapted a mum dance, I’m heartbroken 😔

Janaih · 14/02/2021 15:05

I can't wait to attend bars again Grin

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 14/02/2021 15:10

@Janaih

I can't wait to attend bars again Grin
True! Me neither. Grin
DishedUp · 14/02/2021 15:10

I don't know about you OP but I was under the influence of certain substances on nights out that I'm not under in the living room!

In my head I think they helped me lose my inhibitions and dance better, in reality they probably just made me think I looked cool and Ive always been a shit dancer

LagneyandCasey · 14/02/2021 15:12
@Namechanger0800 I'm willing to concede you may have a point

Grin
I would have well fancied some of those lads back in the day BlushShock

DishedUp · 14/02/2021 15:12

One should never look at photo of themselves dancing on a night out, its better just to live in ignorant bliss Grin

Allhallowseve · 14/02/2021 15:14

I noticed myself clicking while dancing the other day wtf Blush

FossilisedFanny · 14/02/2021 15:15

I too am a mum dancer, how has this happened???? I won a dance contest at The Circus Tavern ffs 😩

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 14/02/2021 15:17

@Allhallowseve

I noticed myself clicking while dancing the other day wtf Blush
😂😂😂
Pinkclarko · 14/02/2021 15:19

As soon as I had my first kid I started to mum dance. I embrace it now, with the old step-touch and a bit of a shuffle. It started off ironically and now it’s become part of my act Grin

Allhallowseve · 14/02/2021 15:24

Iv noticed mine has really come on since kid number 3 , the clicking swaying and this weird head turn where I let my hair waft around .... you have to see it . I have no idea where it's come from but it's not a good look.

drigon · 14/02/2021 15:36

Sure I do this! Mind you, at 53 I'm probably verging on fat granny/older aunty dancing!

On a (very slightly) related note, how annoying is the woman Zoom- dancing in a mad wig, striped glasses and fluorescent outfit on the BBC ident that always seems to be on? I don't know if anyone else has noticed her...!
