When the fuck did I learn how to ‘mum dance’?

Im devastated. Just watched a video that the kids took of me dancing Sad

I was a proper raver in the 90s, glow sticks and all night raves. WTF happened. I was never a swayer. I was doing this weird thing with my arms arms. Feet rooted to the spot.

Very ageing Sad

I’m only 41. This year has been the pitts!

My 12yo DD walked in on my kitchen disco and said "oh my God! Don't ever do that in public!"

Unsuremover · 14/02/2021 08:44

My mum closes her eyes when she dances (feet don’t move though) and I was always thinking “calm down, it’s on thr the end of the war open your eyes!”. Now I sway about in the dark, feeling the music or something I dunno.

LadyBugg · 14/02/2021 08:45

Ahhh you need to get your feet moving. I think you might need to learn to shuffle... Grin

SidVisk · 14/02/2021 08:49

This happened to me yesterday! We put some music on and I caught sight of myself in the reflection of the patio door and just thought "Mum dance!"
The type where all the mums and aunts at a wedding get in a circle and side step and clap. Wah!

alliejay81 · 14/02/2021 08:51

I had DS at 27. There's a picture of me at my sister's wedding aged 29 mum dancing. Proof it must be triggered by child birth Grin.

Labobo · 14/02/2021 08:52

I just looked up mum dancing on youtube and found this fabulous woman. I am horrified that I tick every move.

isthismylifenow · 14/02/2021 08:54

I went out dancing last night (I'm not in the UK before I get piled on). For the last year I have only ever danced by myself in the kitchen (my teen dd doesn't dance with me as she's too busy laughing Hmm). Anyway I got up to dance the first time and felt so bloody awkward, I didn't quite know what to do with my arms and legs, coz y'know people could see me. After a glass of Dutch courage I didn't give a fuck again and had a whale of a time. Phew but I was worried there for a while. Look I can't do the rave jumping thing these days, I'd probably break an ankle

TheQueef · 14/02/2021 08:58

It gets worse as you age.
Once upon a time I could break dance.
Now I look like a refugee from a Barry White concert in the 90's Sad

Labobo · 14/02/2021 08:58

I was happily dancing in the kitchen the other day and then caught sight of the pitying looks of horror on DC's faces. How do we learn to dance properly again. There must be a video online somewhere to undo this sad shuffle.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 14/02/2021 08:59

You may have entered the 'mum dancing' era of your life but please take comfort from the fact you will never bust out your 'dad dance' moves Grin

RomeoLikedCapuletGirls · 14/02/2021 09:00

Oh I LOVE mum dancing and I have truly honed my mum dance moves during lockdown.

Embrace it! Let go of the self-consciousness and let rip. Embarrassing your kids is just a bonus. Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/02/2021 09:00

Could it be that you always danced like that but the cocktail of ecstasy and alcohol made you think you were doing far, far more brilliantly?

GalesThisMorning · 14/02/2021 09:02

This is the first thread that's made me laugh out loud in a long time Grin

You need to try again when you're alone and half a bottle of wine in. Or maybe embrace it and it will become cool? All the teens are wearing mum jeans, will mum dancing be the next craze?

SidVisk · 14/02/2021 09:03

My core is non existent after having twins so I feel like that is the problem with me - I just cannot move the same at all!
I was left with a small hernia too so am scared of certain exercises in case it makes it worse. Consultant said it's not worth operating on.

Love this 😂
Misbeehived · 14/02/2021 09:04

(Whisper it, but I’m actually wondering whether it actually looked like that when we were on podiums with our glow sticks? 😱 Mixmag used to have a photo thing and I often worried I’d end up in it as one of those people acting like they’d found nirvana)😂

Bigsighall · 14/02/2021 09:07

I tried les mills sh’bam... can’t say I looked like them

Choccorocco · 14/02/2021 09:09

If only I could mumdance like that woman! She makes it look elegant! On the strength of that I’ve had to demote my own dancing to ‘fat granny’ dancing - no offence to any fat grannies intended - which is also pretty gutting since I used to think I looked brilliant shaking my thing on the podiums 30 years ago!

I was in Mixmag once gurning Grin

Op, I'm completely with you. My teen dds are, somehow, amazing dancers (they clearly didn't get it off me!) and when they try to get me to join in their TikTok dances I look utterly tragic alongside them. 🤦‍♀️

isthismylifenow · 14/02/2021 09:13

Yeah, could be as straight Jack Daniel's isn't quite cutting it.

I have no coordination whatsoever and my dd tried very hard, bless her, to teach me the Jerusalema dance. I don't think we once got to the end without her bursting into laughter. I'm sure I've lost coordination along the way, as I was never this bad back then. Or was I?😬

I even twerk like a twerp

LagneyandCasey · 14/02/2021 09:15

Oh god this is me too. I'm still a cool dancer in my head, I just make sure I'm nowhere near a mirror or anyone videoing. But to be fair, the leggings and slippers probably don't help the look.

I love Peter Kay's dancing at weddings. The bent over gran dance is what I've got to look forward to now Smile

PralineFowler · 14/02/2021 09:16

My teen DD cringes when I dance and thinks I’m a terrible ‘mum’ dancer.

I used to get paid to dance up on the podium in the 90s raving days. I did dance GCSE. I got a scholarship to a prestigious ballet school that I didn’t take up to pursue academic studies.

She thinks tiktok dances are cool, though, so what does she know? Grin

sandgrown · 14/02/2021 09:17

Does it matter as long as you are having a good time ? At least you are still dancing . Put your handbag on the floor for the full effect !

frumpyswayingqueen · 14/02/2021 09:21

Oh god - definitely guilty as charged!

Please can I join the support group?
I've changed my username in anticipation (thanks to a pp).

I think I'll need to go in the fat granny intensive therapy group Blush
