expressions that (irrationally) irritate you

What expressions really irritate you?

My pet hate is 'gently' - somebody gently pointed something out, gently told them.

I know it's irrationally, don't gently tell me anything just tell me! I'm a grown up, I can take it Grin

The 'flu. It's not THE 'flu. It's just 'flu. You don't say THE arthritis or THE cancer or THE diabetes. So why THE flu?!

Lovelydiscusfish · 13/02/2021 11:58

I use loads of these - I think I must be very annoying! Grin

Actually, one of my best girlfriends was sounding off to me about her fella the other day and one of the complaints she levelled about him was that he “uses lots of slang”. I thought, God, she must find me excruciating then - I communicate almost entirely in slang phrases and swear words!

One word I hate is “relatable”. I always want to scream “relatable TO!”

“Making memories” is another one. Because we are potentially making memories all the fucking time. I can vividly remember my divorces, my mental break down, my constructive dismissal, being evicted..... But you don’t see #makingmemories on Facebook attached to these kind of life events.... (maybe I should start a new trend?)

midsomermurderess · 13/02/2021 12:13

Not irrational: I've found my people; you sound lovely OP, and currently, 'we're in the middle of a pandemic ( I always read that in a rather querulous and screechy tone). These thankfully are all confined to this site.

Taswama · 13/02/2021 12:16

I dislike unnecessary abbreviations like convo etc.

But also many of the recent ones:

'stay safe' as a sign off in an email
'keeping you safe' (as an excuse for service frequently)
In times like these
Now more than ever

Taswama · 13/02/2021 12:17

*poor service

Teddy1970 · 13/02/2021 12:28

@peak2021

I don't like the use of US expressions or spelling- we are not the 51st state.
Same here.
Miltonj · 13/02/2021 15:35

'Makes my teeth itch'
'Gives me the rage'
'Makes me feel stabby'
'Boke'

I dislike them all. Only really hear/see them on here though.

Miltonj · 13/02/2021 15:40

Oh, also when people say 'this'.

That one really is irrational of me!

FrankiesKnuckle · 13/02/2021 15:47

Insane.

"Have you read that book? It's insane!"

"This brownie is insane!"

Fuck off, you're insane.

Miltonj · 13/02/2021 15:58

@Holothane

Init dreadful saying, rarce instead of rice,
We can't help being from Easy Yorkshire! Grin
Miltonj · 13/02/2021 15:58

East not easy Hmm

Snailandthewhale · 13/02/2021 16:06

"THIS"

Taytocrisps · 13/02/2021 16:15

Someone's mentioned it already but the phrase 'You do you' really irritates me. I've never heard it in real life, only on MN.

SunsetBeetch · 13/02/2021 16:39

Boss babe
Wellness
Clean eating/eating clean
But go off
Said that with your whole chest

SunsetBeetch · 13/02/2021 16:40

Me time

randomer · 13/02/2021 16:45

Stay safe.No thanks,I wont.

Cam2020 · 13/02/2021 16:55

'Of' being used instead of in, e.g. 'what did you do of an evening?' insread of 'what did you do in the evening?'.

Fell pregnant.

All this wank about women being Queens and those awful memes about straightening your crown etc. Always posted on SM by the most unregal of people imaginable.

VienneseWhirligig · 13/02/2021 16:58

I am guilty of saying "covvid" but only because I work in a specifically related Covid role where the people I speak to all call it that, I would sound the odd one out if i didn't. I try to say it properly at home because it really annoys my family but I often forget, and then get castigated for sounding like Boris 🤷🏼‍♀️

Notanotherthing · 13/02/2021 17:08

Boils my piss makes me irrationally angry

RubyandPearl · 13/02/2021 17:38

@Cam2020 I always assumed it was a west country thing, my Nana and Grandad used to say it all the time. I think it's quite sweet!

Cam2020 · 13/02/2021 22:16

@RubyandPearl I'm in the south east and hear it a lot here too!

Circemstances · 13/02/2021 22:19

Resonate. "That really resonates with me".

Aaaaaargh.

SunsetBeetch · 14/02/2021 13:40

@Notanotherthing

Boils my piss makes me irrationally angry
Does it...boil your piss? Grin

(Actually I don't like ot either.)

Staffy1 · 15/02/2021 00:42

Peal clutching

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 15/02/2021 02:07

"Wait, what?" In a vague American accent.

My 8yo DD says it all the time and it takes all my strength not to tell her to just fucking stop it.
