expressions that (irrationally) irritate you

What expressions really irritate you?

My pet hate is 'gently' - somebody gently pointed something out, gently told them.

I know it's irrationally, don't gently tell me anything just tell me! I'm a grown up, I can take it Grin

Messages containing multiple "lols" (or even just one actually)
I did this lol. I'm having a lie in lol. Sorry for the late reply lol.
It makes no sense and makes me feel stabby. My DSis does it all the time.

Also "My bad."
Who started that and why? Arrgh!
Just no..

katy1213 · 21/02/2021 01:43

'Gently' makes me feel like wreaking horrible violence on the smug, genteel prissy-knickers who said it.
'Can I get a coffee" ... yeah, get me one while you're at it.
Reaching out ... fuck off, not to me you're not, I don't do hugs with the likes of you.
'Politely' suggest- no, I'd sooner you just spat it out.

AuntHilda · 21/02/2021 02:30

Yay or nay

Even typing it makes me angry Grin

Tilia · 21/02/2021 17:22

I can't quite stick to the brief here, as I don't think I'm being irrational. Over the last few years, I've noticed more and more people unable to use the words "I" or "me" for reasons I cannot fathom. Instead, they substitute "myself", which results in preposterous sentences such as: "If you have any questions, please contact myself." Aargh. Only you can contact yourself. And similarly, "Myself and my friend did suchandsuch" instead of "My friend and I did suchandsuch". Am I alone in finding this teeth-grindingly irritating? Rant over, I'll get back in my box now. Gin

DenisetheMenace · 21/02/2021 20:13

“It’s been a journey”
“It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions”
“The {insert as appropriate} community” (heard the “accounting community” a couple of weeks ago 🤣)
“Amazing”. No, a t-shirt from Primark, fast food meal, television ad, etc. is not amazing. Grand Canyon? Probably.

midsomermurderess · 22/02/2021 16:44

Tilda, that is hideously widespread, and you are not in any way alone in being exasperated by it. See also 'me and...'

myusernamewastakenbyme · 22/02/2021 16:51

One of my friends keeps using the word 'obviously' all the time....its driving me nuts.

CamborneMaid · 22/02/2021 17:37

The over use of !!!!!!!! on posts.

percheron67 · 22/02/2021 17:51

"Sick to my stomach" - you wouldn't be sick to your ass, would you? Overly. Normalcy. Guys, I'm done - do you mean finished? Starting a post with So. Majorly. Fell pregnant - do stay on your feet dear! LIKE. If that makes sense.

FindingMeno · 22/02/2021 18:05

Any use of the word robust when it comes to actions, and "Oh my gosh."

muddyford · 22/02/2021 18:10

Answering a question with 'So'.
Starting a post on MN with 'OK' - this seems to be a male trait.

DK123 · 22/02/2021 18:24

When people post on Facebook to ask for recommendations and conclude the paragraph with "and go......" how bloody arrogant to think people will be falling over themselves to reply!

LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 22/02/2021 18:52

I/he/etc. was sat;
I/he/etc. laid on the bed (unless talking about a hen);
Take care;
Sadly died;
Passed (instead of died);
Could/would/should of (instead of have);
Going forward;
Hope your well (if written like that);
I text him;
To I/myself (instead of me);
Times it by x (instead of multiply).

Not alone at all. You see horrendous solecisms such as "DH and I's anniversary" or "between he and I".

There is nothing wrong with the word "me"!

TableDesk · 22/02/2021 19:15

".... In the mouth of Christmas"

I get irrationally stabby about this saying. HATE it!

Dogmum81 · 22/02/2021 19:17

@notsureofname

Hate "Love you to the Moon and back".
Me too! It really grates on me and makes me cringe!
sprinkleddonut · 22/02/2021 19:20

When people say "know what I mean" after every sentence!

TroysMammy · 22/02/2021 19:25

Peckish. I always think "you greedy fucker, you just want something to shove in your gob for the sake of it".

Chimeraforce · 22/02/2021 19:49

I so agree with the "gentle/gently" wording.
The template letters at work have been reworked to contain these words. Ffs if they want their money, send in the docs! If they don't they won't get their money. How hard is it? What's with all this gentle nonsense?

Cardboardeaux · 22/02/2021 19:50

"The likes of xyz" really annoys me for some reason, as does "and their ilk" (usually used in the context of inverted snobbery).

"At this moment in time". Why not just say "now"?

"In regards to". Nooo! If you must, it's either "in relation to", "as regards" or "with regard to", but 99% of the time you could just say "about"...

Also, at the moment, "the vuuuulnerable" (when said in a hand-wringing way, as though no one who is potentially at risk from covid is able to think for themselves).

Chimeraforce · 22/02/2021 19:52

Global pandemic.
Global is not required there.
Pandemic suggests a global outbreak.

whenindoubtBake · 22/02/2021 20:05

At the end of the day...

whenindoubtBake · 22/02/2021 20:07

Would of and could of instead of would have and could have.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 23/02/2021 12:58

'Let the good times roll'....vomit inducing when posted on social media....almost as bad as 'wine o clock'.
