expressions that (irrationally) irritate you

What expressions really irritate you?

My pet hate is 'gently' - somebody gently pointed something out, gently told them.

I know it's irrationally, don't gently tell me anything just tell me! I'm a grown up, I can take it Grin

I know it’s really commonly used by many, but I just cringe when I hear someone say “hubby” or “the hubby”

Love you to the moon and back

@Mycatismadeofstringcheese

Gently, see also: kindly.

My old boss used to say things like “Mycat has kindly typed up the meeting minutes”.

I didn’t do it kindly. I did it because it’s my job.

My father uses "kindly" in a similar manner. I feel irrationally irritated every single time.

Bite to eat

tuttifuckinfruity · 12/02/2021 20:00

@NotYourReindeer

One i saw earlier today, I'll paraphrase as can't remember exactly but:

"....[he] works in a highly professional role (think Police)"

So, Police then?

Yes, I absolutely hate these ones.

"Think" Confused why? You've just said it? Is it that or is it not?

utterfailureasamum · 12/02/2021 20:01

People who say pacific instead of specific!!

tuttifuckinfruity · 12/02/2021 20:01

@torquewench

It IS incorrect.

Your house needs TO BE cleaned or needs cleanING.

No, it really isn't incorrect Confused
FeckinCat · 12/02/2021 20:02

People who "pop" and "rock up" to places.

"He treated me like a princess".

"The weekly shop". When did "the shopping" become "the shop"?

Saying that someone "yelled" or "screamed" at them. They never seem to be able to recall what the other person actually said when yelling/screaming.

nevernotstruggling · 12/02/2021 20:06

Bite to eat god I'm relieved it's not just me that can't bear this. A quite nice ex used to say this constantly 'so I turned round to ds and said shall we go to Bella pasta for a bite to eat?' As opposed to buying a jcb just to clarify??

Grab and Chuck. Chuck us the saucepan exh used to say.

I used to fantasise about going to relate with exh and making him agree he wouldn't say chuckus or begin a sentence with 'obviously' before I agreed to engage....

nevernotstruggling · 12/02/2021 20:07

'Nails did' I have a lovely friend who says this. I shall never mention it though she's great.

nevernotstruggling · 12/02/2021 20:08

In fact any cliched phrases at all.

Poppins2016 · 12/02/2021 20:09

@utterfailureasamum

People who say pacific instead of specific!!
I remember having an argument with a friend in secondary school as she insisted her pronunciation (pacific) was correct and mine (specific) was wrong. I've never forgotten it and the pronunciation of the word specific been a source of irritation ever since!
nevernotstruggling · 12/02/2021 20:10

Saying 'hashtag' out loud. Duck off

GloveFromAbove · 12/02/2021 20:22

‘A bite to eat’ makes me irrationally angry.

Brody77 · 12/02/2021 20:37

Bish bash bosh just makes me cringe so badly and my dh has a horrid habit of saying itAngry

RubyandPearl · 12/02/2021 20:41

Having a "catch up" makes me irrationally furious.
There are so many more but I camt think of any because I'm so cross about the "catch up" thing Blush

LongPauseNoAnswer · 12/02/2021 20:44

Borrow me something

Or

Recommend me something

No. NO. I can have a loan or I can lend something to you. I can also recommend something TO you Angry

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/02/2021 20:52

“I too“ when agreeing with someone eg “I, too, iron the school uniforms”

It sounds overly stuffy.

Also unnecessary shortening of words eg hot choc, preggers

LindaEllen · 12/02/2021 20:53

I'd hate 'if I was you, I'd have done it this way..'

Because no. If you WERE me, you'd have had the same thought processes that led me to MY decision, not the one you (as you!) think I should have made.

Letsplough · 12/02/2021 21:01

I hate "educate yourself" always said by some condescending twat.

Jasperjosephjulian · 12/02/2021 21:09

I learned them. NO. You taught them. They learnt it. ARGH.

Misericordia · 12/02/2021 21:10

Unpick and process.
"You'll need time to unpick/process it"
"And the rest is history.."

Misericordia · 12/02/2021 21:11

"I'd take a very dim view of that op"
