expressions that (irrationally) irritate you

What expressions really irritate you?

My pet hate is 'gently' - somebody gently pointed something out, gently told them.

I know it's irrationally, don't gently tell me anything just tell me! I'm a grown up, I can take it Grin

'It is what it is' 😒

52andblue · 12/02/2021 17:00

@Bbq1
But 'covvid' is correct, no?
An elderly friend tells me so.
the rest of the world has it wrong.
In fact 'Covvid' is all a fuss about nothing, apparently. Back in the day they didn't make a fuss like all these Snowflakes on Instra (sic)
So, he'll not be adjusting his behavior, or having a jab. No siree.
And anyone who does is stupid. Apparently.
All his opinions come from the Daily Mail.
Grrrr....

Knittedfairies · 12/02/2021 17:13

Prep/prepping annoys me. What's wrong with preparation/ preparing?

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 12/02/2021 17:25

The only people I know who pronounce it covvid are doctors. I assume they know something I don't but I still want to punch them in the face for it.

halcyondays · 12/02/2021 17:27

Vanishingly small

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 12/02/2021 17:29

That's helpful, thanks @IncludeWomenInTheSequel

clearly, after I read my post back, I have a problem with the person, rather than their pronunciation of Covvid Grin

vocal fry is a hideous mutation, whereby the speaker cannot summon the energy to speak clearly and sort of croaks.

devildeepbluesea · 12/02/2021 17:57

When people use the past participle incorrectly.

"My house needs cleaned."
"My dog needs walked."

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😰

My house needs cleanING
My dog needs WalkING

But obviously that's not irrational 😉

PolarnOPirate · 12/02/2021 18:00

Hahaha agree with 'I have mental health'.... Everyone does, just like every one has physical health. You need to clarify what state it is in.

Same with 'I have post natal' - that's more of an americanism. I mean yeah, every woman who has just had a baby is post natal. You do need to add the 'depression' or 'anxiety'.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 12/02/2021 18:01

"Am I right in thinking" before telling you.

TheNationsFavourite · 12/02/2021 18:03

I hate 'hope that helps' - so self satisfied. Plus if people are leaving the office/group for a while - 'play nicely'. As if they're in an elevated position and a civilising influence on the mob. Whereas the reality is that no one will give them a second thought while they're absent and things will continue exactly as normal.

Fifthtimelucky · 12/02/2021 18:07

@DaylightSunlight

'Circa'

Can't stand it. Why not just write 'in'.

This was me circa 2010
I attended Uni with her circa 1904

Hmm

Because circa doesn't mean in - though I suppose people may be incorrectly using it that way.

It means 'about' or 'approximately'.

One of my pet hates is 'courtesy call'. Usually used by people cold calling to try and sell you something you don't want. The call usually goes something like this: 'Hello. My name is x from y company and I'm just making a quick courtesy call to let you know that we are in your area next week and ...'

Similarly l, I remember the estate agent we sold our last house with (admittedly many years ago) insisted on describing the front path as a 'courtesy path'.

Fromage · 12/02/2021 18:09

Devildeepbluesea - I think that's Scottish

"You are enough."

FUUUUUUUUCK OOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFF.

muckypaws · 12/02/2021 18:09

'Ticks all the boxes.'
'Jump on a train.'
'May I make a suggestion?'
'If you know what I mean.'
'It is what it is.'

Hmm

Circa doesn't mean the same as "in", it means approximately. So I agree - if a person knew the exact year they did something, it would make zero sense to use it. It's more often used for historical events where there's uncertainty re timeframe it happened, e.g. building was built circa 1900.

LouJ85 · 12/02/2021 18:11

@Fifthtimelucky

Exact same thoughts at approx the same time! Grin

LouJ85 · 12/02/2021 18:12

I'm not being funny
Don't take this the wrong way

I always brace myself to be completely offended when someone prefixes a statement with this 🤣

williowrosenburg · 12/02/2021 18:13

I cant stand the term "triggering"
Trigger warnings, I feel so triggered
Hmm
Life doesn't come with a trigger warning!

Also the term "cancel culture" can in the bin!

torquewench · 12/02/2021 18:15

"Hubby" gives me rage.

Also "Onboarding" e.g. induction for new starters at work. They're starting a new job, not going on a frigging cruise.

ChocOrange1 · 12/02/2021 18:16

@mama4321

Am I the only one.........
Yes! Especially on AIBU someone will say "am I the only one who likes cheese" or "am I the only one who thinks sex is great".... obviously you're NOT the only one!!
LemonDrizzles · 12/02/2021 18:16

To keep an eye on something. Like am I taking out my eyes? Perhaps I'll keep it in my view. Or I'll prioritise bearing it in mind. I don't like the idea of spying.

Hmm

Maybe because they don't mean the same thing?
