You go girl!

I can't be the only person who bloody hates this shit? Please tell me I'm not.

Now, I'm all for a bit of encouragement, before someone calls me a miserable old boot, but what's wrong with a perfectly respectable 'I hope it all goes well'?

I have a friend who has started business page on FB and I genuinely wish her well. So far I've seen a 'you go girl!' followed by lots of these 💪💪💪💪, a couple of 'you've got this' and a 'this girl can!'.

What the fuck are these people on about? My 'wishing you all the best in your new venture' sounds somewhat lame ... 😁

I think you should have posted this in AIBU because YANBU!

WorraLiberty · 10/02/2021 17:05

wishing you all the best in your new venture

That doesn't sound lame at all. It sounds typically British, which seems to be more of a rarity nowadays Grin

YANBU

It’s a specific type of people that talk like that, I actively avoid them wherever possible.

Your friends not started selling MLM shite has she? You might want to mute her if so!

AIMD · 10/02/2021 17:15

Urgh yes that’s cheesy as fuck.
I wouldn’t mind if people were like it in real life but people only seem to say that. Stuff on sm.

Tink1990 · 10/02/2021 17:33

Oh gosh, I say this all the time, especially the "you've got this" 😂 but I do talk like that IRL and my friends know, so don't take much notice haha Grin

MacDuffsMuff · 10/02/2021 18:02

@Tink1990 well that's ok then? 😂

But when it's Marjory from the parish council it sounds a bit ... odd.

Tink1990 · 10/02/2021 18:11

No, I completely know what you mean!

Cam2020 · 10/02/2021 18:13

Those kinds of statement make me want to vom! Bloody awful!

MacDuffsMuff · 10/02/2021 18:53

We've now had a 'She said she could, so she did'. I can't cope.

OP posts:
AIMD · 10/02/2021 21:44

Can I add in to the mix any comment including words like “fierce” “queen” “girl boss” etc. It’s all just a bit much.

ImFree2doasiwant · 10/02/2021 21:49

Worse than "you got this" is "you got this mama " just FUCK off. I haven't got this.

Nunoftheother · 10/02/2021 22:53

Totally agree.

Recently I deliberately started writing, "you're welcome" rather than "no worries" when someone thanks me for something.

Sheleg · 10/02/2021 23:12

I hate it too. Along with "Get it, girl!" Get what? The KitKats from the cupboard??

Nellephant · 10/02/2021 23:18

Oh my lord, if you hate this phrase then NEVER run a half marathon as a mildly plump female.. the sheer number of times it was used.. by the end of the race I was running on pure anger AngryAngryAngry

Also, I had to firmly inform my doula that "you got this" was not the labour affirmation for me.

Got to agree with a pp that it sounds like she's signed up for an MLM as that's the type of encouragement they get from other reps from the company. Hope it is a genuine small business though and she just has very perky sounding friends.
MacDuffsMuff · 10/02/2021 23:35

Def not MLM, she's makes a product that she's now selling. Smile

They've been coming thick and fast this evening, I think her more perky friends are trying to out perk each other. There's been talk of 'reaching for the stars' and everything.

I don't think I could say that and believe my sincerity so I'm probably a miserable boot too. It's nice she's getting support though.
OppsUpsSide · 10/02/2021 23:45

It the standard bullshit aimed at females on SM, from MLM, to starting a real business, to wiping a shitty bum, to having a gin.
It’s a thoughtless platitude.
Yours (reminds me of my mother) is far better.

OppsUpsSide · 10/02/2021 23:47

Oh I do love a bit of ‘reach for the stars’ though, I aspire to having that SC7 banger at my funeral.

ReluctantHomeschooler · 10/02/2021 23:47

Speaking of stars, I absolutely detest when I’ve done something for someone and they say “You’re a star.” So annoying and patronising. Even worse when they spell it “Your a star” 😡.

HideTanner · 10/02/2021 23:49

If I don't say it in conversation I don't say it digitally either. That goes for this 'you got this, babe' style naffness as well as 'going forward' and other examples of god awful management speak.

She's very lovely and it shows with the support she's getting, perhaps I'm just too reserved. Maybe I should start whooping more, there have been a couple of 'whoop whoop' s on there too. I'm just not sure I can pull it off tbh.

OP posts:
AnneLovesGilbert · 10/02/2021 23:55

She’s presumably a woman, not a girl, and that sort of thing is grim. Your message was supportive and normal.

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/02/2021 23:56

Do not whoop. You’ll never forgive yourself and I’ll never forgive you.
