Pointless - just me?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2021 17:51

Since Lockdown first got started, I've fallen into the habit of watching Pointless as often as I can. I love it. (I've come to the conclusion I'd have a good chance of doing well in the early rounds, but would probably come a cropper in the last round, as most of the contestants do.)

Anyway, the point that occurs to me more and more often now is how blindingly obvious it is that all the shows currently being broadcast were filmed before Lockdown last year. Sad

'What do you do?'
'I work in a theatre, doing the lighting.'
'How lovely, what an interesting job!'
[Yes, but this last year you must have been on your uppers! is my reaction to that.Sad ]

'What will do you when you retire later this year?'
'Well, we expect to be seeing a lot of our families, who live 200 miles away...'
[Nope, only over a screen Sad ]

'What would you do with the jackpot if you won?'
'I've got a special birthday coming up this year, so we are planning to have a huge family reunion and a once in a lifetime trip ...'
[Gutted for you that all your plans will have come to nothing, likely as not. Sad ]

Just me?

Also, how long before we move over to the episodes they filmed in the autumn of 2020?

I thought this today when one winner said he wanted to do a big celebration for his daughter's birthday in March (2000) and the other planned to go travelling in his campervan ☹️ I love it too!

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 09/02/2021 18:20

I mean 2020 not 2000!!

Cruddles · 09/02/2021 18:22

I'm always surprised at the amazing adventures they're expecting to have with the piddling jackpot on offer

It has to have one of the worst payouts for winners, even for a BBC quiz.

I'd apply for it but I know I'd be knocked out immediately if they had a sport round.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2021 18:27

Well, to be fair, the pair who won today got over £12k. That's unusual, though.

I just laugh when I see the options for the last round. Impossible to guess whether you could make something of any of them, or not.

I've been on pointless. Loved it. Got the trophy and won the jackpot too. Go for it!

StColumbofNavron · 09/02/2021 18:30

I take solace in the fact that Russian Literature in the last round stays on the list for ages as no one picks it, so when my day comes ....

I do, in fact, have an unfinished Pointless application in my Inbox.

Id love to go on pointless. Wanna hear more from @HeyJackKerouac

Couldn’t agree more “what will you do with your share of 1k”....erm pay a bill and do a food shop Wink
EasternDailyStress · 09/02/2021 18:37

I was part of the audience and was so disappointed, as I was a huge fan. Richard and Alexander just stood around checking their phones between takes, no interaction with the audience or contestants.

To be fair I think they film several episodes a day, but even so ...

I still watch it, but it's lost some of its charm for me.

Mochudubh · 09/02/2021 19:07

I've been wondering this. Some of the more recent celebrity ones look as though they're trying to distance (didn't see Saturday's but iirc the Christmas one was socially distanced).

I think at one time I remember Xander saying there's about 9 months from filming to screening but that might have been a joke, seems a long time for what looks like a fairly simple production (compared to War & Peace for example).

Even so, I'd have thought they would be onto ones filmed post March 2020 by now. I get that some couples will live in the same household but they can't all be in bubbles surely.

Campervan Jonathon and his Sunderland Friend were so lovely, it really cheered me up Smile

I went on with my son and we won £7000. We had a great time. We live in Scotland and auditioned in Edinburgh. All fares/hotel were provided for the London filming. We were really well looked after. Was quite a lot of hanging around in the morning but once filming started things moved pretty swiftly. I was so nervous but my son was great and came up with the answer that got us the jackpot. Xander was pretty friendly, Richard not so much. It was a great experience and the trophy has pride of place in my house. I would really recommend it.
Fridget · 09/02/2021 19:16

Quite sad isn’t it, to see people before we knew what would happen.

But yes I love the show, really good fun! Is it just me who finds the chemical elements rounds boring though? Today’s was ok but the “name an element beginning with C H E or M” rounds.

PS i enjoy rrrrrrrugby!

Fridget · 09/02/2021 19:17

@HeyJackKerouac how long does it take the film? Is there much hanging round?

Well done on your jackpot!

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/02/2021 19:20

A friend and her DH went on in October. It was filmed in January.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2021 19:23

@Fridget, I'm quite good at the elements rounds. My Achilles heels are sport and celebrities, both of whom seem to come up all the time in the final round.

@HeyJackKerouac

They film about 4 a day don't they? Do you have to go and do a quick change, come back and pretend it's next day?

JaquelineBeanstalk · 09/02/2021 19:28

They are currently looking for pairs who are in a bubble to record the next lot. DH and I were going t o apply ( but her never got round to filling in his bit.......).

I was on the chase recently- it was recorded back in November 2019, but only aired late 2020. If you watch The Chase these days they have changed it to be Covid friendly- Perspex screens and greater between contestants, no handshakes.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/02/2021 19:30

I'd be dreadful at any sport round except for tennis.

And I'm terrible at flags.

Richard Osman's House of Games has kept us sane during lockdown.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2021 19:37

If I could persuade my son to give it a go, we'd have an excellent chance. His knowledge of music and films is amazing, and he's pretty good on sport too. Hmm.

We filmed 2 episodes in one day. We were knocked out in the head-to-head in the first episode. We were picked up from the hotel quite early and taken to tv centre. Then all the contestants for the day's filming were kept in the green room. We all had a run down of the rules. Then hair and makeup and choose what you're going to wear. I think we were told to bring 4 different outfits. Once you go through to the studio there was hardly any hanging around. Maybe an hour for each episode. We were finished in time to get over to King's Cross and on the train back to Scotland at about 5pm I think. We had been told that if we weren't picked for those days' episodes we'd get another night in the hotel and come back the next day.

Yes, 4 per day and yes we had to go and change between episodes.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/02/2021 17:25

Another one tonight. 18yo asked what she does. 'I work in a pub but I'm on a gap year and soon I'm going travelling to SE Asia.' No, you're not, I'm afraid. Poor kid.
