Does everyone think their Mum’s roast is the best in the world?

My mum is a good home cook. Not fancy but I always like her food. However when’s it comes to a roast, nothing else has ever come close. To be honest she cooks a pretty bog standard roast, but she does it just the way I like it. I have never had one I prefer, she taught me to make a roast but it’s still not as good as hers. I would never order a roast when eating out because I know it just wouldn’t compete. I think it’s about the comfort of it as much as the taste. Does everyone else think like this?

No, my mum always over cooks everything

My roasts are the best in the world and my mil's are second. Even my dh agrees which actually came as a shock

ShrikeAttack · 07/02/2021 07:30

Every time someone eats one of my roasts they do proclaim how good it is.

It's easy though. I don't fuck about.

Buy good meat and treat it kindly. Pork and lamb I only ever buy shoulder. They need slow and gentle cooking.

Beef, I only ever cook rib. Timing is a bit esoteric. You have to look at the dimensions and make an informed guess. Generally less than you'd think, and rest it for an age.

Chicken, buy a decent one in the first place and you can't go wrong really.

Roast potatoes are only ever cooked in goose fat, find the flouriest you can (King Edwards are best until about the end of Jan, after that they get a bit waxy and I use Maris Pipers until Easter, I don't cook roasts after Easter). Boil them until they're almost falling apart. Drain and leave until dry. Put in a tray of hot goose fat, spoon the fat over the top, don't toss them, if you've boiled them enough they'll disintegrate. Sprinkle liberally with Maldon salt. 40 mins (depending on your oven, 160c is the best temp), turn and salt again, give them another 40 mins.

Perfect roast potatoes.

@Squarepigeon

No. My mother hates meat and it shows!
My mother hated me and it showed in the food resentfully hurled in my direction.

The dog's Sunday dinners always looked lovely, though.

My dads was😥, my kids even thought it was better than mine.

mindutopia · 07/02/2021 07:51

I’m pretty sure my mum has never cooked a roast in her life. Even for Christmas and Easter, after my grandmother died (we used to go to her house and she would cook), we mostly used to get Chinese. As a kid, it seemed cool. But I recognise now that she was just completely unable to cook a decent meal.

Schmooopy · 07/02/2021 07:58

Nope. Everything was always overcooked and under seasoned, meat was chewy, vegetables were mushy and bland (I was in my 20s before I learned that cabbage and cauliflower weren't one vegetable that was served as a kind of sludge green paste). Also she would serve up random stuff with it (piece of tuna and onion quiche, or stir fried baby sweetcorn with your sunday roast, any takers?). After I left home and learned to cook myself I went back one weekend and cooked a roast for everyone. Teenage DB proclaimed loudly 'wow this chicken is so chickeny, mum why doesn't yours taste like this'.

I had a boyfriend in my late teens and his mums roasts were legendary, I went there every Sunday. She cooked everything in lard!!

Stilltalkstotrees · 07/02/2021 09:05

God no. Mum's is usually okay but mine is sublime!

Imapotato · 07/02/2021 09:14

No. My mums a terrible cook! My roasts are far better Grin

LubaLuca · 07/02/2021 09:14

No, my mum is very proud of being a useless cook. I was self-catering from the age of about 13, and she hasn't once cooked a meal for me since I left home 25+ years ago. It's one of her quirks, not a bone of contention.

Bearlyclearly · 07/02/2021 09:19

No, I can’t remember my mum ever cooking a roast on a Sunday. Her Christmas dinners were ok but I do better plus my mum has the appetite of a sparrow and thinks everyone eats like her so there’s never enough food.

idontlikealdi · 07/02/2021 09:36

My mum used to be an ace cook and I would have said yes but now mine is definitely better.

I rarely order steak or a roast in a restaurant / pub as I am always disappointed.

Updatemate · 07/02/2021 09:38

No.

My mum can't really cook.

midnightstar66 · 07/02/2021 09:39

No but my dads is, and mine is a close second. I can't quite make it taste as good as his though no matter how hard I try.

AnaisNun · 07/02/2021 09:40

Lol - no.

My mums not a great cook. To put it mildly.

grannyinapram · 07/02/2021 09:41

No! my mom would always make boiled potatoes... sure fire way to make sure a dinner is bland Blush

SkyeIsPink · 07/02/2021 09:42

Nope, mine is, but she did make the best curry in the world!

seriousandloyal · 07/02/2021 09:45

I love my mum's cooking, all my childhood favourites she still makes which makes me so happy!

Forevercurious · 07/02/2021 10:09

Yes! Mums roast dinners are the best, excellent home made roast potatoes and Yorkshire’s. Loads of different veg cooked well, meat always perfect.

DP cooks the roast in our house and he’s aren’t bad at all, he’s almost perfected his roast potatoes. PILs are a different matter, meat cooked the day before and served COLD! Frozen mixed veg, frozen potatoes and Yorkshire’s with watery gravy. I love them dearly but not their food!

NoWordForFluffy · 07/02/2021 10:13

God no, unless you like tiny portions and utterly annihilated veg!

EternalOptimist7 · 07/02/2021 10:15

No not the best in the world but pretty good. DM isn’t a bad cook all round, although it’s gone off a bit as she’s got older. Probably the best roast I ever had was at a pub near my BIL’s house upcountry. I have never seen so many vegetables! And you could have some of every meat if you wanted. My mouth’s watering now just thinking about it!

TitInATrance · 07/02/2021 10:17

My mum can cook lots of things but her roast was always overdone meat and overcooked veg with greasy gravy. Her Yorkshire puddings are good.

MrsJBaptiste · 07/02/2021 10:21

Well I hate a roast dinner so may not be best placed to answer but my mum's cooking is ok but nothing special. I know my kids will say the same when they're older too!

I hate food shopping, planning and cooking (give me hoovering and ironing any day!) and this must show in my cooking. Tasty and edible but just ok.

Einszwei · 07/02/2021 10:25

My father's (and mine) are the best... my mum isn't a cook...which always seems to be the assumption on mn.

saracorona · 07/02/2021 10:26

Yes my mum's cooking was the best. She worked in Kitchens from aged twelve to when she married and we were spoiled rotten, we never had a main meal with out a sauce; my favorite being onion sauce. When she got old (in the 70's) she started experimenting and I can remember the fascination we had in her first Indian curry with rice and curried spuds because we were Irish after all!
She was actually obsessed with potatoes, she grew her own and we had different types for different meals.

DottyWott · 07/02/2021 10:27

No but my Dad’s is!
