Does everyone think their Mum’s roast is the best in the world?

My mum is a good home cook. Not fancy but I always like her food. However when’s it comes to a roast, nothing else has ever come close. To be honest she cooks a pretty bog standard roast, but she does it just the way I like it. I have never had one I prefer, she taught me to make a roast but it’s still not as good as hers. I would never order a roast when eating out because I know it just wouldn’t compete. I think it’s about the comfort of it as much as the taste. Does everyone else think like this?

No, my mum could burn sandwiches, but my dad's fry ups have never been beaten. I actually made one this morning and sat there thinking - it's okay, but it's not like my dad does it.

BashfulClam · 07/02/2021 00:50

Jeez no my mums cooking is shit! Over boiled veg, roast potatoes boiled then put into a chip Pan while the oil is cold so they gave a leathery coating on them, meat overcooked so it’s dry af. Always thought I hated roasts until I tried a good one.

Late mum made gorgeous cakes and puddings but when it came to cooking dinners she could burn water. Late dad on the other hand made fantastic meals. His roasts were gorgeous and if I could only remember how he used to make onion sauce to serve with lamb I would be truly happy.

Yes, because she was a fantastic cook. Her curry was amazing and her Christmas cake i miss every year. Her tarragon chicken! And she made the best coronation chicken. Great with pastry too... rest in peace mum i really miss you.

My DM roast is excellent but mine is better Grin

@LadyMonicaBaddingham

My Mum makes the best roast potatoes I've ever tasted, but she uses packet stuffing and insists that microwaved courgettes are tasty...
I'm sorry, but I think you'll find my mum's roast potatoes are better Grin Grin

No, as my mums couldn’t compete with nan’s, especially her gravy that went with it. Pretty sure man used old dripping in some capacity, maybe coating veg or ?? Wish I had of taken notice of how she cooked, for so many things, but way too late now as she’s been dead for several decade. It’s all gone to shit now though as I do roasts in the slow cooker only, just not the same.

The first time I went to England , in the late 1990's, I stayed in DHs family's council home they had lived in since the war, with 4 children, and 3 bedrooms. I was a warm inviting place. My MIL, probably early 70s, made a roast. It was an expensive prime rib. She cooked it the night before and left it on the counter overnight. I must confess it took every ounce of my manners not to faint at the thought of dying so far from home of roast food poisoning. I was horrified.

It turned out ok. The roast was so leatherized nothing could have grown. Bless her.

My Mom at home in Canada made the best.

LoveFall · 07/02/2021 03:40

Ps I may be a Canadian born and bred, but I grew up trying my best to make Yorkshire puddings. I still make them. Yum.

Highfalutinlootin · 07/02/2021 03:56

No. My mother was not an enthusiastic cook, and it showed. She barely used seasoning and never bothered making sauces, so everything was horribly bland. She was also from a generation very concerned with food safety so she massively overcooked all meat.

In fact, my mother's terrible cooking and wanting to finally taste good home food was my main inspiration for becoming a competent cook myself.

Reinventinganna · 07/02/2021 04:05

No, she boiled the veg to nothing

beautifulmonument · 07/02/2021 04:26

My mum is a dreadful cook.
I was a very fussy eater and basically thought I just didn't like anything until I left home and started eating nice food. 😅

Graciebobcat · 07/02/2021 05:05

Nope. I never liked roast dinners until I went to MILs. My mum cooked the veg until it was watery and the meat was tasteless and leathery.

Graciebobcat · 07/02/2021 05:08

And we only ever had boiled potatoes or mashed.

yearinyearout · 07/02/2021 06:01

Sometimes they put courgettes on a roast in pubs/restaurants. WHY?? It is beyond inappropriate! I mean, I like courgettes roasted with peppers etc but steamed on a bloody roast dinner is just wrong.

Pyewhacket · 07/02/2021 06:14

No. My mother was French and never cooked a roast in her life. She said it was what stupid English people do. My grandmother on the other hand, whom l lived with on from the age of 14 on their Dorset farm, could cook a sunday lunch like no other.

ShrikeAttack · 07/02/2021 06:30

No. My mother is a good cook.

But I'm a great cook.

ShrikeAttack · 07/02/2021 06:32

Bit harsh of your Mum @Pyewhacket!

Why did she marry an English man?

justanotherneighinparadise · 07/02/2021 06:48

I cannot remember the last time my mum cooked for me!! We must be talking thirty off years ago for a toast dinner!

Changeismyname · 07/02/2021 06:58

Nope. My DH doesn’t like roasts and acknowledges (now that he has eaten better ones and is coming round to them) that this is because his mum is just not good at making them. She is a good cook with other foods but roasts seem to be a blind spot for her.

stillonthattightrope · 07/02/2021 06:59

My mother's cooking was dreadful and got worse as she got older. My dad wasn't a great cook either.

My MIL's roasts were nice but she's stopped cooking and mostly takes us out if we go over for a meal. I never saw my FIL cook, I assume he didn't.

Me and my partner make a pretty good roast and tend to do it together.

TokyoSushi · 07/02/2021 07:00

Definitely not, but DH's actually is!

110APiccadilly · 07/02/2021 07:01

No. My mum does a very nice roast, but I have a friend who does the best roast in existence.

FTEngineerM · 07/02/2021 07:03

Nope MIL hands down.

VERY LUCKY IN THAT DEPARTMENT

MaryIsA · 07/02/2021 07:13

Her Yorkshire’s were great and her roast potatoes amazing and made great gravy...but the meat was grey and tasteless and dry. It wasn’t till I was lodging as a post grad with a guy who would cook us a roast that I realised what roast beef was supposed to taste like!
