Does everyone think their Mum’s roast is the best in the world?

My mum is a good home cook. Not fancy but I always like her food. However when’s it comes to a roast, nothing else has ever come close. To be honest she cooks a pretty bog standard roast, but she does it just the way I like it. I have never had one I prefer, she taught me to make a roast but it’s still not as good as hers. I would never order a roast when eating out because I know it just wouldn’t compete. I think it’s about the comfort of it as much as the taste. Does everyone else think like this?

nocoolnamesleft · 06/02/2021 22:13

My mum does the best roast potatoes ever.

No, she cooks frozen veg! I do miss my late nans though and that is despite the fact it was like your typical greasy spoon caf roast dinner. Over boiled carrot and turnip, boiled cabbage, tinned peas, Yorkshire's. That was because if was exactly the same every Sunday. So you get nostalgia for things cooked exactly the same each time. My mum never did her average roast dinner consistently the same, nor served it every Sunday, and just as often my step dad would make it his varied ways so I guess I don't have any nostalgia for their sub par offerings like I do my nans.

No, my mums cooking was never amazing not helped by her being untrendily (at the time) one for cooking what was in the garden, and their own meat - so you'd get microwaved marrow for weeks and weeks, watery tough leeks in sauce, or mashed celeriac. All ok in their own way but each thing went on and on and all very plain.
MILs roasts are utterly appalling. The first time I went there at Christmas DH did warn me how bad it was, but having been very spoilt with the quality of meat at my parents (all home produced, or swapped with their friends home produced, so very good even if I hated lamb and goat) it was a bit of a shock to get very cheap meat which had been cremated the day before and then reheated to death in gravy on the day.

I don't like mum's cooking

She is very thin but cooks with no fat or butter etc. She doesn't like gravy.

She is the sort who can eat plain boiled cabbage. I would rather not eat!

oohmyback · 06/02/2021 22:22

No my husbands is! 👍

DarkDarkNight · 06/02/2021 22:23

My mum’s roast is awful, her mum did a mean roast though.

No.

I love my mother dearly but cooking? No,

Thesearmsofmine · 06/02/2021 22:32

No, I make a better roast(she would agree).

Lululu22 · 06/02/2021 22:32

Yes, my Mum cooked the most amazing roast beef, nicely pink, perfectly seasoned. Mine are never the same but not helped by the fact I like it quite rare and everyone else likes it well done without a hint of pink.

lastqueenofscotland · 06/02/2021 22:32

My mum makes the best roasties hands down. I’ve been trying to get mine like hers for years and have come to the conclusion witchcraft must be involved. No other logical explanation.

CatherinedeBourgh · 06/02/2021 22:33

I don’t think my mum has ever cooked a roast in her life!

Not sure I’d be brave enough to eat it if she did...she really really can’t cook.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2021 22:35

Nope. She's not cooked a roast for years and hates cooking. Best one is at a country pub a few miles away, sadly. Although they are doing a takeaway service so that's tempting...

DK123 · 06/02/2021 22:39

No, my DM doesn't/can't/won't cook.

I can make a reasonable roast but don't often have enough people to cook for to make it worth it.

My ex MIL made a mean roast. Literally the only thing that made going to their house bearable!

ethelredonagoodday · 06/02/2021 22:43

No, my mum is a terrible cook. 😬🤣

FatCatThinCat · 06/02/2021 22:45

Nope, I've never had a roast worse than my mum's. Once the potatoes were so burnt they were lumps of charcoal. Then she got the hump because nobody would eat them.

Quarterback11 · 06/02/2021 22:48

Yes! Because it is Grin (MIL makes the best gravy though)

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 06/02/2021 22:49

No, my Mum is an awful cook (so is my Dad!) It wasn't until I met my partner that I realised just how good home cooked food could be.

I now think my partner's roasts are the best. He has genuinely ruined so many meals out for me, because I just compare to his amazing cooking at home!

Rosecottage888 · 06/02/2021 22:59

YEP

indemMUND · 06/02/2021 22:59

Yep, I can't replicate it. Same goes for making amazing cups of tea and coffee. I don't know what she does given the same ingredients and process, but she's the best.

Theimpossiblegirl · 06/02/2021 22:59

Sometimes my roasts are amazing, sometimes they go a bit wrong, but my teens are always really appreciative. They didn't even like a roast much when they were little. Now they say they'll be back every Sunday when they have kids of their own.

Stinkywizzleteets · 06/02/2021 23:00

My stepmum makes the worst roasts ever. Anaemic meat, watery gravy and everyone has the shits within 20 minutes of eating it. Lockdown has some benefits

Longdistance · 06/02/2021 23:01

Nope. My roasts are better than my mums, sorry mum 😳

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 06/02/2021 23:03

God no! My mother was the worst cook ever.
She had a stroke which left her partially paralysed and one day said “I’ve not been able to cook since my stroke.” I replied “Moyer, you couldn’t cook before the bloody stroke!”
