Does everyone think their Mum’s roast is the best in the world?

My mum is a good home cook. Not fancy but I always like her food. However when’s it comes to a roast, nothing else has ever come close. To be honest she cooks a pretty bog standard roast, but she does it just the way I like it. I have never had one I prefer, she taught me to make a roast but it’s still not as good as hers. I would never order a roast when eating out because I know it just wouldn’t compete. I think it’s about the comfort of it as much as the taste. Does everyone else think like this?

Mine is far better.

Dogsarehairy · 06/02/2021 23:07

My Dad always did the roasts and my DH does at least half

Alas my Mum was a 'start the veg well in advance' cook,
I had three younger siblings who didn't eat any veg until they left home and realised that not all vegetables had to be bland mush.
I make a good roast. All my siblings will travel for it and lockdown notwithstanding we used to have a houseful on Sundays.
Sigh. I will cook for a houseful again one day....

My Mum never does and never has done a Sunday roast. Almost 50 years ago when they got married Dad's Mum told him that he had to cook lunch on a Sunday as Mum had been at work all week too and deserved a rest.

And so he did.

If my mother ever cooked a roast, it wasn't memorable.
She wasn't an enthusiastic cook, tbh.
Her potato salad or egg nog were good.

DillyDallyDoodle · 06/02/2021 23:23

My roast is definitely better. I steam the cauliflower/broccoli/green beans etc for a start instead of boiling it into a mushed up mess. I also do roasted butternut squash which no good roast should be without!

I used to think my mum was a good cook until I started cooking myself Grin.

PattyPan · 06/02/2021 23:25

No, my mum uses aunt Bessie’s roast potatoes. They are nowhere near as good as homemade!

Maskedcrusader · 06/02/2021 23:26

My mums roast lamb with garlic & rosemary was the best comfort ever. My Exh does the best roast beef. He plates one up for me & sends it home with the kids👍

Scarby9 · 06/02/2021 23:28

I'm afraid not. My mum was a fabulous cook but only did a roast under sufferance and although it was nice, I have had better ones elsewhere since.

Slub · 06/02/2021 23:29

Yes

GlamourSpider · 06/02/2021 23:32

Hell no, dinner as a child was err... interesting (mainly rushed and under-cooked). She's got better in recent years but a roast at the pub is usually better!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2021 23:33

My mum used to overcook meat, and didn't roast potatoes properly. But she did make good gravy and Yorkshire pudding.

MIL did excellent roast meat and roast potatoes, ok Yorkshires and so-so gravy. Better veg than my mum.

I think I've picked up the best from both.Grin

Frouby · 06/02/2021 23:33

My mums are crap 🤣🤣🤣

She says mine are the best she's ever had. Even to my other dsis's 😁

shhsecretsquirrel · 06/02/2021 23:34

God no, my mums cooking is horrible! Unless it comes out of a jar... and then it's only mildly horrible

NoSquirrels · 06/02/2021 23:34

No, because my dad’s is. Grin

I don’t believe I’ve ever had a roast dinner cooked by my mum.

My dad’s roast is also my DH’s gold standard for a roast dinner and a few others too. It really is that good.

You’re right about the comfort of it. There is nothing at all like it.

amusedbush · 06/02/2021 23:34

Nope, my mum boils the shit out of vegetables and she makes thin gravy.

I thought sprouts were just supposed to taste like wet farts until I grew up and discovered how good they are roasted.

Dreeno · 06/02/2021 23:35

No, my gran's were the best. Dh's is a close second but he does the Yorkshires crisper than my gran did, so minus points for that. Wink

skyfullofstars · 06/02/2021 23:39

I would do literally anything to eat one of my mum's roast dinners again! 5 years on and nothing or noones attempts have come anywhere close 😭

Strugglingtodomybest · 06/02/2021 23:41

No, she always overcooked the meat and DH makes the best roasties imo.

ParkheadParadise · 06/02/2021 23:46

Her roast was ok
BUT her stovies were out of this world.
When you came home and opened the door you could smell them cooking.
She showed me numerous times how to cook them but they were never as good as hers.

notangelinajolie · 06/02/2021 23:51

No, I didn't like my mum's cooking at all. Sunday dinners may have been tasty due her using meat stock complete with fat for gravy, lard for the potatoes and generous amounts of salt but guaranteed to clog your arteries.

LApprentiSorcier · 06/02/2021 23:54

No. Neither of my parents can cook a roast dinner to save their lives. My roast dinners are much better. However, my mum's apple pie is the best in the world and my dad makes a mean pumpkin soup.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 06/02/2021 23:56

No - but my notional Heaven serves my mother's potatoes at every main meal (halved lengthways, layered with onion and half-submerged in stock and backed in the oven to a perfect mix of textures and crunch).

nyenc · 06/02/2021 23:57

Nope. Mine are!

Coldbatteredpuddings · 06/02/2021 23:59

No - my mum is a terrible cook. No salt in anything, really thin, watery bisto gravy, veg boiled to disintegration point 🤮
It was only when I met my husband that I realised roast dinners could actually be nice!
