Feeling very sad about this, even though he was 91. The Sound of Music is one of my favourite films and reduces me to a snivelling wreck every time I see it. RIP, Mr Plummer, and thanks for everything. You were great in Knives Out recently.

Oh he was lovely in the Sound of Music.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/02/2021 18:59

Everyone was lovely in The Sound of Music, except the Nazis, obviously. Even the Baroness had some redeeming features.

Sad about this. Sound of music was my favourite film as a child.

GooseberryJam · 05/02/2021 19:09

Me too. I've just listened to some of the soundtrack and had a bit of a cry. Reminds me so much of watching with my mum

JaimeLeeCurtains · 05/02/2021 19:10

'Bless my homeland forever'. That always got my grandma going.

Five67Eight · 05/02/2021 19:12

So sorry to hear this - DH just told me, as I am a Sound of Music fanatic (even did a tour in Salzburg).

🕯 Christopher Plummer. 😥

Ihavenoidea · 05/02/2021 19:30

He was undoubtedly a very talented actor, and I'm sure he will be a sad loss to his family and friends, but he was also very arrogant, selfish, had a vile temper, was an appalling snob, a drinker, a poor father and not a particularly faithful husband, but other than that........

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/02/2021 20:00

Applies to a lot of actors, I'm sure, @Ihavenoidea.

My great aunt loved him in sound of music; every time I went to stay with her as a child/teen we would watch it on video. When it came out on DVD we would sit and watch the extended version, complete with intermission in the middle, and, we would watch it continually whenever I stayed over and stay up into the early hours talking about it.

He was why she sat through my favourite Star Trek film (undiscovered country) in which he plays a wonderful Klingon, and, again loved it. So the two films became our comfort films.

His death very much brings back her passing.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2021 20:15

I love the sound of music, but I read somewhere that he was pretty awful to work with and didn't like the kids. He refused to take part in a reunion in the early 90's.

Frownette · 05/02/2021 20:18

He used to call it the sound of mucus! He was good in knives out.

Skipsurvey · 05/02/2021 20:20

he was so lovely in The Sound of Music

WonkyCactus · 05/02/2021 20:20

I'm really sad he's died. I love the Sound of Music.

ilovesooty · 05/02/2021 20:43

He was married to his last wife for 53 years. Also it's been documented that his daughter's mother refused to allow him access. He made contact with her as an adult and they had a friendly relationship subsequently.

He's also the oldest actor ever to win an Academy Award.

TrickyD · 05/02/2021 21:35

He was excellent in ‘Oedipus the King’ .

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 05/02/2021 21:41

He was very good in All the Money in the World.

He will forever be Captain Von Trapp for most people.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 05/02/2021 23:13

I used to love the Sound of Music as a kid too. My family on my Mum's side is Austrian. They don't like the film at all. Grin

CP's daughter - Amanda - was excellent in 'The Prophecy', she's underrated I think, has her dad's talent.

allycat4 · 05/02/2021 23:20

I'm devastated. He was my all time favourite actor - a huge talent.

YewandOak · 05/02/2021 23:36

Never watched the sound of music but loved him in The Thorn Birds

SpanishFly · 06/02/2021 00:33

I did not expect to feel so upset when he died.
I feel like Captain Von Trapp himself has died.

londonscalling · 06/02/2021 02:01

This is my favourite film ever. I've watched it SO many times. I've always had a soft spot for him. When I heard the news of his death I watched the YouTube clip of him singing Edelweiss in the singing competition. The clip shows him getting choked up. I started bloody crying!!! I don't know where that came from but for some reason I feel really sad!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/02/2021 02:46

@SpanishFly Captain Von Trapp died in 1947

JaimeLeeCurtains · 06/02/2021 07:30

The BBC are saying his singing was dubbed in The Sound of Music!

ofwarren · 06/02/2021 07:51

It was dubbed, it was Bill Lee who sang it.
Here is Christophers version
Bills is much better

satishoused · 06/02/2021 08:26

I loved him as CvT

The sexual tension here 🥵
