My grandma always had a tin of Swiss herbal sweets in her glove compartment, and she wore leather driving gloves. I thought she was terribly posh.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/02/2021 22:27

Using taxis.
Red shoes.
⬆️ By this measure I’m a duchess.

Branded products as a wean we had value, economy, etc and got the mini cereal packs when we went on holiday

As a student first encountered dipping crusty ciabatta in oil and balsamic. I was like, so you dip the bread in both?

anappleadaykeeps · 03/02/2021 22:30

Foreign holidays ....
it was years before we actually made it across the Channel to France (cheapest car ferry deal possible, and camping in a tent that leaked), but wow - finally we had a foreign holiday.

@coronafiona
Yeah. The tragedy is, the original bathroom suite was white.
Maroon is a nightmare to keep clean in a hard water area.

Marcipex · 03/02/2021 22:33

Fry’s Turkish Delight
Ribena
Walnut whips

Blue eyeshadow. My friend’s mother was an Avon lady, which I thought was a very glamorous job. She always wore loads of makeup and fashionable clothes , unlike everyone else I knew.

newlabelwriter · 03/02/2021 22:34

Readily available branded snacks and fresh fruit out on display for all to eat 😂

@Puzzledandpissedoff

The opera

I was taken years ago in London, and dressed up to the nines because I thought everyone did
Half the audience were in jeans ...

My friend and I did this a few years ago going to the ballet Blush
Ltdannygreen · 03/02/2021 22:38

I used to have sky in my from the age of 9, my mum worked for them so we got it super cheap and when my friends used to come around they used to say I was posh because I had sky in my room. Obviously I didn’t see it like that, I was as far from posh you could get but.

Mochatatts · 03/02/2021 22:39

Dishwasher, never had one
Quiche, was only ever bought for birthdays so thought it was expensive/posh

Gingaaarghpussy · 03/02/2021 22:39

This thread is making me feel bad.Sad
I knew we weren't poor growing up but seeing a lot of stuff on here as posh that was normal for me, is depressing. Although my mother was always a mahoosive snob.
She was not content with bog standard tea, she went out and got samples of various "posh" teas and created her own blend. Something like, darjeeling, assam and earl grey mixed together. In later years there was a shop that did it for her and was known as the Kinchin blend.

Melange99 · 03/02/2021 22:39

When I was going to New York I told my DH to dress really smartly, I wanted an upgrade to Business Class. He grumbled but we did it. It worked. We were so casual when the desk person said I have upgraded you (we didn't ask), and just said thank you. When we got out of sight of the desks we were like Del Boy and Rodney when they became millionaires! Never worked since though.

Rupertbeartrousers · 03/02/2021 22:40

Separate shower in bathroom
Muesli
Having lunch in a cafe rather than pack up and a flask
Branded clothes
Holidays with a swimming pool and entertainment... or center parcs
Melon cut into balls
Cloth napkins

Tombero · 03/02/2021 22:41

This thread makes me very nostalgic. Mine are definitely Vienetta as it was only a birthday treat and gold bars (which i hadn’t seen for years, but now occasionally find in Poundland).
Smoked salmon was said in hushed tones at Christmas, and looking back, we probably only ate it then and thought it very extravagant.
Happy days Smile

NomadNoMore · 03/02/2021 22:41

Carpet in the bathroom 🙈

LightDrizzle · 03/02/2021 22:42

When I was little, in the 70s, I assumed more was more, so I imagined posh people gilding about on deep, soft, pale shag-pile carpets; answering gold plated telephones and being chauffeured in blingy Rolls Royces.

merrygoround88 · 03/02/2021 22:42

A Land Rover

YolandiFuckinVisser · 03/02/2021 22:44

Smoking. I don't know what gave me this idea.

I ignored the first comment banging on about your pasta forks but this is cringe, we're fine don't worry
Staffy1 · 03/02/2021 22:49

Quality Street. To be fair, I didn't grow up in the UK, so only had these at Christmas time in my teens, sent to us by my Gran. They were richer than anything we could get locally. Also Ferrero Rocher, which we thought were exquisite.

shiningstar2 · 03/02/2021 22:49

Side plates and cloth napkins at every meal

MadamFlutterby · 03/02/2021 22:50
