Living 'down south'

TiersForFears1 · 03/02/2021 22:02

@JKRismyhero

Also my nan used to buy Sara Lee chocolate gateaux which I thought was the height of sophistication. I am now an adult and realise this is not the case haha
My friends and I would call it Ghetto Cake, and we were from South London!
BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/02/2021 22:03

Satsumas with a little leaf on them

MrDarcysMa · 03/02/2021 22:05

@Miseryl

Calling tea "dinner" when you live in the north is pretty posh! 😂
Yes this. Now I live south my northern family are confused when I call dinner lunch and tea dinner.
MrDarcysMa · 03/02/2021 22:06

Sky tv

Brogues · 03/02/2021 22:08

Those throws for beds that look make it look like an iced cake.

coldwarenigma · 03/02/2021 22:08

Thought of another as a teen - tried lemon tea, but didn't realise you dont put milk in it! Grin

ShimmyShimmyYa · 03/02/2021 22:09

Therainisback · 03/02/2021 22:09

Lurpak.

We weren’t allowed to buy it and I remember promising myself that when I was an adult I’d buy it, as if it was a massive extravagance!

KeepWashingThoseHands · 03/02/2021 22:12

Putting everything in serving plates/bowls not directly on to plates.

LicketySplat · 03/02/2021 22:12

Anton Berg marzipan chocolates. We could only find them in the duty-free at the airport and my parents eked them out, so precious were they.

coronafiona · 03/02/2021 22:12
@coronafiona
Ours were metal trays with metal twisted 3 prong fork things to stick in the cob.
We had pastry forks
Silver cutlery, which included fish knives and forks, small knives and forks, big knives and forks, soup, dessert and tea spoons.
A whole dinner service that could be used for up to 10 people.
Grapefruit spoons.
Maroon bathroom suite and shower room.
And yet my mother rarely cooked from scratch.
I'm jealous! You had corn on the cob boats AND a maroon bathroom?!?! Swoon!

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/02/2021 22:12

Having Different types of spoons as in soup spoon and dessert spoons
As a kid we had spoons, random and unmatched. Not a specific spoon for soup
Even now at home I just have spoons. No separate spoo

Using a cup and saucer

ImaHogg · 03/02/2021 22:13

When we were kids our dad would cook us French Toast I thought it was so sophisticated until I’ve grown up and realised it’s just eggy bread!

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/02/2021 22:14

No,no French toast isn’t cold eggy bread. That’s just wrong
Like calling tea wet brown liquid

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/02/2021 22:17

The opera

I was taken years ago in London, and dressed up to the nines because I thought everyone did
Half the audience were in jeans ...

DrCoconut · 03/02/2021 22:17

A school friend used to have a box in her kitchen that contained kitkats, breakaways etc. They got one each every day. I was so envious as we didn't have chocolate bars unless it was a treat.

Blondiney · 03/02/2021 22:19

I was always envious of my friend's Soda Stream for some reason Grin

Tana433 · 03/02/2021 22:19

My DH just said Toffifees were posh when he was little. The neighbours had them at xmas and he had to make do with Matchmakers. No wonder he is so happy, i buy boxes of them for him, God love him, i darent tell him you can get them in Poundland, he thinks he has a wife that spoils him!

userxx · 03/02/2021 22:20

wearing your best clothes to fly in an airplane (these days, most people don’t even dress up in Business/First class - hugely casual).

My mum and dad used to do this and got upgraded a fair few times.

maggiso · 03/02/2021 22:21

Television that worked without my father having to tweak all the connections around the back! A telephone that was not on a party line. Ice cream for tea. Tinned salmon. Roast chicken. A new ( not very old) car. Central heating especially warm bedrooms.Automatic washing machines.chickens in the garden for fresh eggs. A detached house with horses in the next field. Owning a horse. Landscaped gardens.
