Ffsnosexallowed · 06/02/2021 10:34

Ribena

MyFavouriteIsWhoeverlsQuietest · 06/02/2021 10:52

God yes - had forgotten that. Ribena. Was it really expensive in the 70s?
It was a different recipe?
Mini melba toasts
vol-au-vents
babybel

Jericha · 06/02/2021 11:06

Was a child in the 90s. Posh to me then:
Bin in a kitchen cupboard
Dishwasher
PC and printer
Buck's Fizz
After 8s
Sarah Lee chocolate gateaux

RosesAndHellebores · 06/02/2021 11:51

Padded, satin cards that came in a box!

ImFree2doasiwant · 06/02/2021 12:23

@RosesAndHellebores god I'd forgotten those!! There was a phase of absolutely HUGE cards too

Bloodhoundgang · 06/02/2021 13:14

Those cards were the ultimate in apparent poshness.

I always thought anyone called Gloria had to be posh. There must have been a character on Dallas or something but I thought it was the height of class🤣🤣

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 06/02/2021 13:16

Having a pedigree cat, or one that was a recognisable breed rather than just "a ginger one" or "a black and white one". My godparents looked after a Russian Blue for someone once and it was most exotic.

Dogs were different, unless they were a rare breed or something very chi-chi like a Pekingese.

Beachhuts90 · 06/02/2021 15:27

I grew up in the states so I haven't even heard of a lot of the things mentioned 😂

My list is:

Having a fireplace
Eating meat (my parents became vegetarians recently but were always funny about meat)
Home baking that wasn't from a mix
Home internet access (we got it when I was 12 but I was an adult when they god WiFi)
Cable TV
White bread

Beachhuts90 · 06/02/2021 15:27

**got wifi

Norwayreally · 06/02/2021 15:40

Some of these are v.interesting. Referring to dessert as pudding definitely is not posh, the only people I know who say pudding are probably the furthest thing away from posh.

CookieDoughKid · 06/02/2021 15:47

My mum's sister in Hong Kong. Penthouse apartment with a concierge overlooking the city. Fur coats and Hermes handbags. Even her children had fur coats.

I think pudding is posh though?

Language is a minefield, and everyday habits can be an instant giveaway, revealing the speaker's social class. That's according to Kate Fox, a social anthropologist who picked out terms that a true upper-class Brit or royal would never use.

*Her 2004 book, "Watching The English: Kate Fox
sweet, afters, dessert
The course at the end of the meal is "pudding" for royals and the upper class. The terms "sweet," "afters," or "dessert" are all deemed unacceptable, she wrote. (Side note: Some very posh people shorten the word to "pud.")

I say dessert. I am not from the UK and I am not posh.

Notgotanyidea · 06/02/2021 16:23

@CaptainMyCaptain

People mentioned thinking shop bought cake was posh. I was the same with knitwear and though shop bought was better than hand knitted. Now I only wear hand knitted.
I was so desperate to have an M and S school cardigan like the cool girls, instead of a hand knitted one. Never happened.
LetItGoGo · 06/02/2021 16:26

Home made was just a bit old fashioned hence the lovely homemade pies and cakes if everyday were sidelined at family get-togethers In favour of a massive defrosted gateau!

mbosnz · 06/02/2021 17:06

1970's here, but not the UK.

Having a genuine barbie doll, not a knock off from the supermarket.
Ditto having barbie accessories - like the swimming pool, wardrobe and bed. (Alanna, I'm looking at you. . .)
Having store bought clothes, and not hand me downs. I'm telling you, wearing a vinyl coat that my sisters had worn in early 1960's, in the mid 70's was not fun.
Smoked salmon - Mum was livid when she presented it at a buffet dinner, and was told 'nice trout Marj'!'
Having proper adidas sneakers.
Having a haircut with a flicked fringe, instead of a bowl cut.
Having shampoo and conditioner.
Going to town - all dressed up to the nines, and we would have, with great ceremony, lunch at a tearooms, where one could choose between a ham roll, or a pie, or a sausage roll, one cake, and a drink - which could be that height of sophistication that was Viennese coffee - which was filtered coffee with cream in it, or a milkshake, even.
Buying a brand new car - we bought one and it was the talk of the village for weeks, with dark mutterings about how my parents must be loaded, and how they were profiteering as the local pub owners. It was quite dodgy going to school there, for a time.

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

The Grand Hotel in Scarborough
We stayed there 40+ years ago in one of those company work things when the husbands have meetings and the wives and kids faff about for the weekend. It had a big staircase and I thought it the poshest thing ever and spent the entire weekend wafting down it as if I was a princess. 👸 Happy days

Living in the suburbs

Standrewsschool · 06/02/2021 17:35

@FaintlyMacabre

Vienetta
Came on to say Vienetta, and it was the first thing mentioned!
CorvusPurpureus · 06/02/2021 17:46
@CorvusPurpureus I love the story about your parents and their little ritual. It's absolutely lovely that they still do this. Thinking about them tonight Wine
Aw, thank you! I haven't seen them since Xmas 2019 as I work abroad & they're shielding, so we have stayed away.

Spoke to my mum over zoom yesterday & they were about to push the boat out with a bottle of wine EVEN THOUGH they'd had a Bacardi & coke (well, Lidl versions of both) this afternoon.

Mum was worried that dad is encouraging this too much in lockdown as it seems terribly extravagant & he had a nap this afternoon so is obviously collapsing into alcoholic degeneracy. He's pushing 80 & I reckon he's entitled to get mildly squiffy on a Friday if he wants, but apparently they had clearing the gutters scheduled & she didn't trust him to hold the ladder for her Grin.

I'm quietly confident they'll both outlast me tbh, & I hugely envy their marriage - they've been bickering like buggery for over half a century but adore each other.

Maduixa · 06/02/2021 17:56

Speaking of salmon - my grandma (is that posh?) was at Glasgow Uni immediately after the Second World War (1946-1949ish) and worked part time in a cafe that did most of its business at lunchtime. The waitstaff regarded one menu item as specifically posh/upscale: chilled salmon with lemon wedges, mayonnaise, and a salad garnish. She was from Ayrshire, her Dad fished, and at home she had fresh-caught salmon at least once a week in season - served hot with potatoes and roasted/grilled/boiled veg. But that cold salmon with lemon and mayo at the cafe was another world for her. Funny to think that these days, the hot home-cooked salmon and accompaniments she grew up with would be more "posh" than cold salmon salad.

RoSEbuds6 · 06/02/2021 18:25

M&S prawn and mayo sandwich! such luxury. Before they rocked my world a sandwich was just cheese with maybe a bit of apple if it was on Sunday.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/02/2021 18:36

Ihopeyourcakeisshit - love that! I can just imagine. It is a beautiful building.

If you asked my dad this question he would say Scarborough. He went there on holiday around 1950 from a South Yorkshire mining village and it seemed the height of sophistication. Dh and I moved near there and we took him for a day out, he was so disappointed!

Sceptre86 · 06/02/2021 18:40

@FaintlyMacabre yes to this. It was more expensive when I was little and my dad would buy it as a treat shared between 6 of us, we only ever got a thin slice.

I agree with pp who said smoked salmon and croissants. They are things I have only ever eaten more routinely as an adult.

MirandaWestsNewBFF · 06/02/2021 18:46

Takeaway - we never, ever had it except very occasional fish and chips.
New clothes that you could choose or were bought to suit you, rather than hand me downs.
Doing your big shop at M&S.
Going out to eat.
Conditioner for children’s hair.
My granny’s Teasmade and the set of red and gold Dickens books in her front room.

We lived in a detached house with two labradors and two cars so by lots of people’s standards would be seen as posh - but very little available cash as my dad was a big spender and had a couple of very expensive hobbies (shooting and fishing). So very little cash.

MondeoFan · 06/02/2021 19:06

A glass shower door rather than a curtain
Profiteroles
Vienetta
